I am so sick.. need suggestions

Does anyone have any good suggestions for what to do when you have major aching due to illness?

I woke up feeling not so great this morning (achy, a bit nauseous, and having stomach cramps). I took a shower and felt a tiny bit better but by the time I was half way through the dogs morning walk I was miserable and could barely make it back to the house. I am not sure I have ever had body aches and pains so severe before (especially not without 20 other horrible symptoms).   I seriously can barely even walk 10 feet and am doing my best right now to sit vertical for a few minutes so I can try to eat at least a ½ a piece of toast and take some advil to help reduce the aches and the cold sweats I am having .

I am just not sure I am going to be able to keep the pills down so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other things that can lessen the aches a bit and maybe help me get some sleep today.

I was thinking a bath might help but I am not sure I could even get in the tub, yet alone get out of it.

Anyone know of something that works for them or for their kids besides medicine?

Gosh, no meds?  The only thing I can think of is maybe a detox juice (go to Whole Foods or jamba juice or something) and then get a massage?  After that push fluids like gatorade, etc...??

The last time I was really sick like that the doc told me to take 2 Tylonal (500mg) every 3 hours and 3 motrin (600mg) every 3 hrs. Take with food though!

It seemed like total overkill when I heard it but it really worked.

For me at least, Gatorade is like a miracle food when I'm sick. If I can convince myself to drink it, and keep it down, it always helps.

    Get well soon!!

My suggestion (for adults, not kids) is homeopathic Arnica Montanta tablets available through a health food store.

Arnica Montana is an herb... a natural anti-inflammatory that is available as an essential oil, rub (gel or cream), etc.  The homeopathic tablets can be taken internally for all kinds of muscle issues but for general sickness as well.  They consistently work great for me.  They are about $10 (plus or minus) for a small bottle, depending on manufacturer.

    Hope you're feeling better soon!

I think this is the best advice and I've heard it recommended before.  Unless you can't keep anything down, I'd go with this.  I hope you feel better soon.  It sounds awful [:-]

Sorry you're not feeling well. This sounds awful!

I was thinking a hot bath might help too. Some bubblebath and some salts would be nice if you're feeling achy. That's what I like when I'm sick. Followed by a nap. I think if you can manage to get yourself in the tub, It would help.

I can't believe you walked the dogs in this state, btw! I would have given them Kongs and stayed in bed! You are a trooper!

I normally don't like taking pills, but since most of my pain is usually related to soreness, aching, and swelling, I take Ibuprofen sometimes.

    .

I'd be really, really careful going this. Remember you can not have more then 8 (500mg) pills of tylenol/day or you risk liver damage. The only patients I ever recommend a gram of tylenol/4 hours are crani patients. Motrin doses that high not taken with food are extremely dangerous as well and may lead to gastritis. I agree with Nsaids around the clock when you feel like crap, but not in those doses. Feel better soon Shelly!

Edit: for generalized aches, motrin works best, I'd start with 400 ever 4 hours though. Tylenol is better for headaches/fever and I usually start at 650 every four hours for that. Warm showers are good and ginger for nausea if you can't get anything prescription.

Oh, good point Kelly.  I hadn't noticed the timing of the Motrin.  If I take too much Motrin or take it too close together, I get horrible stomach aches.  I have taken 800 mg, but only every 6 hours, and not more than 2400 mg in total in a 24 hour period.  Does that sound okay Kelly?

oh yeah, that sounds reasonable :) In all honesty, that dose of tylenol worrys me more then the motrin did. That would be about 8 grams/day which is twice the maximum reccomended dose. That's awful scary that people would take that much.

well since you do live in california....

    LOL..thats funny CF..
Hottest bath you can stand, loaded up with bath salts, soak for a good hour, and stay off that damn excersize ball for a bit..

I'd also recommend a hot bath with some Epsom salt.  That's what hubby does when he's not feeling well and when he has aches from working out!  Hope you get to feeling better soon!

I like using the Tylenol & Ibuprofin in combination - but my doc & my kids' doc always had us alternate each medication every FOUR hours. It's so much better than one medication every 8 hours because one will be kicking in just as the other is wearing off.

Bradley and Mark.. you two are making me LAUGH and that is not a good thing right now…. it makes the aches worse! [:D]

I tried to take 400 mg of motrin with ½ a piece of toast over 2 hours ago and then 20 minutes later,  up they came. I don#%92t know how long it takes to get the benefits of the Motrin but I didn#%92t want to risk taking any more right away.

Instead I grabbed the shower stool and I took a 20 minute incredibly hot shower by candlelight with Enya playing in the background (I figured I would try anything at that point.. I was pretty desperate …lol).  I then went to bed and this time was actually able to get comfortable enough to slept almost an hour.  I feel a bit better right now but still achy and feverish, but the nausea is significantly better.

DH said he would pick up Gatorade for me at the store, But he won#%92t be home for close to 5 more hours and works about 40 minutes away so he can#%92t just drop some off. I can#%92t make it to the store myself right now so I have to do with what I have around here.[&o]

I am making some rice and when it is finished in 30 minutes I will have a little and try the motrin again with some food.

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions and well wishes too. I feel like an incredible baby.. I never whine like this when I am sick and a few months ago I wrote a whole thread about my dh being a whiny PITA when he is sick…. I feel really lame asking for suggestions but I don#%92t know when I have ever been so achy that I can#%92t walk more than a few steps.

TAO- thanks you for that suggestion. I will look for it and maybe keep it around the house for the future.[:)]

Mark- no worries.. my body was already sore from too much exercise ball this weekend so I am staying off for a day or two![8D]

Bradley- I like your suggestion and if I can#%92t keep down the motrin then maybe I will try your plan.. afterall.. it IS California!![;)]

Kelly- Thanks you for the medical advice.. I actually have a question I wanted to ask you that I almost used this morning. When I get migraines that have severe vomiting, after  few hours if it doesn#%92t subside on its own I try to get down a Dramamine and if I can keep it down it not only stops the nausea and vomiting, but also knocks my lights out for ½ a day so I can recover. DO you see any problem with using Dramamine for this?

Thanks again everyone!  I hope the rice is almost ready so I can eat and try more pills!
