The icon in question...

In light of the results, for those of you who voted against the icon (and we know who you are), please refrain from debating the ethics, use or misuse of this particular icon in the future.

Ummm, there we about 16 posts debating the issue on the "for" side and 3 on the "against" side in that thread. Most of the comment has been from people who voted for it. And for the record, I voted against it because it was causing so much trouble. Not saying anymore, probably for awhile, for I find this directive much more "Big Brother" than the original debate itself.

I hope this is a safe haven for one last breath.  For further clarification.  The icon in question was inappropriately used by another member and that interpretation offended a minority group within the forum.  The OP further offended by entering the discussion thread and offerred no apology.  It was also proven that the icon can never be used in a nice way.  When the minority group voiced, the majority opposed the minority group by attempting to suppress comments on the issue and the suggestion of removing the icon.  A formal vote was taken and the minority group lost, to no one#%92s surprise, save one.  The minority group will now be watched and policed in order to silence their voice about the icon or express the opposition of the icon#%92s use against their post.  It somehow seems wrong.  The Original Poster of icon displayed it in an inappropriate way and there was no public discipline other than the post being edited out.  The minority group seems to have gotten a public flogging.

For those that wish to "rub the loser's face in it", I can only say that in the discussion thread, I got less red.

My knee jerk reaction to all this would be to say "oh, GROW up" (to no one in specific)

However, since I consider having my post edited to be a public embarrasment, I'll refrain from my intial thot....

For some it is a deeper issue that is reflective of other happenings on this forum.  It also highlights how disrespect can be such an off-the-cuff common occurrence.

With all due respect Dave, I must say that this whole issue in regards to the icon has gotten so out of hand that it has turned into a mockery.  Comments like the above one do not help your cause, nor do they make you any friends. A vote has been taken and if I recall correctly, in your profile, there is a way to block the showing of emoticons. Perhaps you should use this function.

To quote someone we both know,  I shall end by saying  "let it go" and  "that is all I have to say.  Good luck to you".

If the respect was sincere then Dave would be David as I end my PMs and as I mentioned in other posts.

Sorry, I can never let it go if I perceive something as representing animal cruelty, I have just seen too much of it and can not joke about it.

When writing that, I meant for there to be no more griping, period, however, I will admit that I assume that those who don't like it would be the gripers

DPU, in the above quote I said that there would be no more griping, period. Not what you are saying here:

Just because someone doesn't agree doesn't mean that you can stifle freedom of expression.

Denise, only the admins know who the voters were and what their votes are.

Saveastray, my statement "for those of you who voted against the icon..." was to try and discourage this thread. The results are in, debating for another 7 pages is not going to get any of us anywhere.

As said before, let the dead horse lie.

No disrespect was intended by dropping the “id” as I was unaware of your preference. Thank you for enlightening me.

I wish you the very best in your continual battle to fight animal cruelty on a dog forum of animal lovers.

    Good night and good luck.

I perceive something as representing animal cruelty

I think it has been well shown that your preception is WRONG. Can you please accept it and move on, we are all growing tired of this nonsense. It is an icon representing a colloquialism period, not representative of animal cruelty. Why should anyone have to change their behavior because you misunderstood something? That is just ridiculous.

I really do not wish to continue this but if I am addressed and I will respond.  I don't think being called a griper is not nice nor respectful.  I don't mind being called a harper.

I also do think that it is you that have stifled my freedom of expression, not expressed by a cartoon character which can be there or not, but by the written word.  From my understanding e.g. I can not tell Probe1957 whether or not he has offended me because it may appear as a gripe and secondly it may be consider a personal comment to Probe1957.

Independent thinking, free-speech, minority rights, censorship...again somewhere someone's head is exploding.

DPU, I'm sorry if you feel "stifled". However, if your "independent thinking, free-speech, minority rights" are disrupting the general well-being of this forum, I will do something about it.

I had hoped that a poll would end this matter, however, that doesn't seem to be the case.

ETA: You won't have to tell Billy he offended you, everyone on this forum knows where you stand from the pages of dialogue. Telling someone something is fine. Dragging it out for an eternity and causing general strife is not.

Personal Champ, truly with respect, I do not wish to continue this but if addressed, I will respond.  By all means if something is disrupting the forum then you must act.  But you are charged with responsibility to properly identify that disruption.  I must be a pretty power member here so that when I say I don't like icon, it brings everything to a halt.  I think not.  Sometimes you have to accept the challenge of dsiciplining the subgroups of this forum.  I did not make the issue but merely stated my pleasure.  It is the other subgroup that made such a fuss.

Personal Champ, for the record you made a mistake.  Probe1957 did not offend me nor has Probe1957 offended me in any of Probe1957's posting.  Probe1957 makes me laugh.

Nobody#%92s opinion or perception is ever WRONG. Those are that person#%92s feelings on the subject, however unpopular or misunderstood they are. An opinion can#%92t be WRONG. Whatever other disagreements we may have, there should be a mutual respect for other#%92s opinions. [sm=2cents.gif]
