medical info needed from SAW III movie

I do injury prevention education with kids and teens and this includes brain and spinal cord injury discussions. I use models to show kids what happens to your body when you make stupid choices.

I always ask teens “what do doctors do to help decrease the pressure and swelling in your brain after having a traumatic brain injury?”   About 75% of the time at least 1 student will know the answer (opening the skull).  But ever since SAW III was released, I get a TON of kids that know the answer because apparently there is a scene in the movie that has to do with this very topic.

I HATE horror movies and REALLY hate all these torture movies as of late, so I refuse to see it to know exactly what they are talking about. I have asked several classes now to explain to me what the circumstances are in regards to them opening the skull.

SPECIFICALLY what I want to know is “ when they open the skull, is that part of the torture of the individual OR is it actually done to save someone#%92s life,”   I can#%92t seem to get a straight answer from these kids and I won#%92t talk about the movie OR use it as an example in a classroom if it indeed was torture and not done out of an attempt to save someone.

Can anyone who has seen this movie please explain the circumstances to me?  I REALLY CANNOT sit through this movie to get the answer on my own. [sm=vomit03.gif]

It is NOT part of the torture.  The man with the brain tumor has this weird device trapped to the doctor's head.  When his heart beat stops, the device basically blows up the doc's head.  He told her to do ANYTHING to save his life.  She said he has to have this surgery that would relieve the pressure on his brain.  He almost dies a few times, and since she doesn't want to die, she finally agrees to do it.  So, it is done to save someone's life.  The doctor is the one being tortured, and the person with the brain tumor is the one behind all the torturing.

Thank you so much for your response.[:)]

OK.. I am trying to make heads or tails of this. Sorry I am being so weird and confused..I guess I don't really understand the premise of the story maybe?

so who is the girl and the doctor and the guy with the brain tumor again?
    • Gold Top Dog
    I'd say it's coercion...at the very least?

    the brain tumor guy=torturer=bad guy
doctor/woman=person being forced against their will (via device strapped to explode their head should they fail) to do a surgery on a known torturer and murderer.

unless there are 3 people this is how I read it.

thanks for the link Gina... GAWD that is NASTY to read all that crap.[:'(]

i am still a bit confused but this is part of the important stuff I took from that link:

After she finishes her shift at the hospital she prepares to leave, but finds herself trapped in the locker room. Amanda kidnaps her and brings her to Jigsaw's new lair. Lynn wakes up to find herself tied to a wheelchair. She is wheeled to Jigsaw, John Kramer, who is resting in a makeshift hospital room. After asking Lynn how long he has to live, Jigsaw says, “I want to play a game.” Amanda equips Lynn with a [linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_traps_in_the_Saw_film_series#Shotgun_collar]bulky collar[/link] surrounded by shotgun shells. The collar contraption is linked with Jigsaw's heart rate monitor. If Jigsaw flat lines, or if she strays too far from him, or if she tries to take the collar off herself, the shells will fire, killing her. It is explained that another man is also being tested, and if he completes his tests before Jigsaw dies, she is free to go.

Back to the makeshift hospital room, Lynn explains to Amanda that Jigsaw has a [linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_herniation]brain herniation[/link] and his only hope is to get care from a hospital, but Amanda won't permit leaving. After Lynn and Amanda stabilize Jigsaw, from a sudden [linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seizure]seizure[/link], Amanda asks for the tools needed to fix the hernia. Lynn tells her she'll need [linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anesthesia]anesthesia[/link] and a power drill.

Lynn prepares to operate on Jigsaw under [linkhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Local_anesthetic]local anesthetic[/link]. She uses a power drill and then a bone saw to cut open a hole in his skull to relieve the pressure the tumor is causing. John's heart rate begins to decrease and he starts having flashbacks in which he is seen with his former lover, Jill.

I am amazed at the number of MIDDLE school kids who actually have seen it.  It is REALLY disturbing to me what these kids watch and especially at such a young age. Yes.. I think I shall NOT reference it at all.. but when they say "oh they cut open your skull like in SAW III" I can just simply say "yes..."[:)]  and leave it at that!

It is TERRIFYING to think kids that young have seen this. It made my stomach turn just reading it. Now people dying in horrible ways,  is "just a movie"....so sad. I wonder how many had parental permission to view it?

depends on the age I am sure.. but for the younger ones I would say "less than 10%"

What the doctor has in her neck is irrelevant to help the OP to know if it was torture or to save a life (explaining what the doctor was doing there and why is making this thing more confusing)

The bad guy has a tumor, the doctor opens the skull to release the pressure while the bad guy is still awake so the doctor can save his life, everything else is just the movie plot

Yeah, you're gonna get more confused if you need to know what exactly is on her neck and how it got there.  Then you'd have to start at the very beginning of all three movies, and if you don't like horror flicks in general, you would not want to even know.

The scene IS NOT that bad. Trust me. I have this AWFUL fear/anxiety thing when it comes to ANYTHING to do with bones (yes, even scenes on television) and this scene didn't irk me.
The fact that she has to use non-surgical tools to open his skull isn't bad. She still manages to open his skull like a professional doctor would. It's not like she took the drill and started drilling his head and brains started flying everywhere and it was all gross. It was done...tastefully, I guess, in fact, it was probably the most tasteful scene in the entire movie.

I used to think that we were letting our kids watch all sorts of movies they probably shouldnt.  I let them play some Teen rated games (although I prefer they shoot aliens and not humans).  DD (10) loves nothing better than to watch Emergency Vets and can tell me all about the surgeries.  I felt even worse when a number of their friends still need specific permission to watch a PG movie, or play a video game that isnt rated E.

But omg I wouldnt let my kids see the Saw movies.  I wont even let them watch a lot of the prime time dramas.  I saw the Exorcist at 12 and had nightmares about it for years!
