• Any other grammar/spelling ***? chelsea_b Posted : 4/29/2007 1:11:07 PM I'm a nerd. I know this. I'm okay with it.   It drives me NUTS when people regularly spell things wrong. It happens once in a while to all of us, but when people use the SAME wrong spelling over and over..? Man, I want to shoot myself. And things like using the wrong your/you're, do/due, their/there/they're, apostrophes where they don't GO (how are your dog's? Uhm..my dog's what??). I do it once in a while, but all the time? Does anyone else notice these things, or am I an even bigger nerd than I thought? I HATE grammar, spelling, and everything that goes along with it. I find it very boring. That's why I chose (that word looks funny to me, did I spell it right?) engineering as my major. A lot of math and physics with very minimal english thrown in. We engineers are generally not very good spellers anyway. Soi f I ofend any of you's with gramarr or my spells, i apologise. • ottoluv Posted : 4/29/2007 1:51:56 PM I personally don't have a problem with it at all.  If you understand the post and/or the idea behind it, why does it matter?  I posted the link before to the study which looks at spelling ability and intelligence.  Spelling appears to be genetic and is NOT correlated with IQ.  Grammar tends to be partially genetic but also depends somewhat on educational level.  There are many young posters on this page, and I don't feel it is appropriate correct them publicly.  It's rather insulting and rude in my opinion.  If you really feel like you need to "educate" someone or show them your great knowledge in spelling and grammar, a PM IMO would be more appropriate.  Just my [sm=2cents.gif].  I think being a perfectionist is fine, and even being bothered by it is relatively normal for the OCD type, but correcting others is just rude. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. I don't know, like seeing a car in a really ugly color or something. Makes you turn your head and go, "Ack!!" Certainly not offended. I'd much rather see good thoughts expressed with sub-par expression than bad or mean thoughts expressed perfectly! • dlg81 Posted : 4/29/2007 2:00:50 PM I only have one issue that annoys me:  when people use "their" as a possesive pronoun for a singular noun.  I'll use a line I heard in one of my favorite movies for example: "No parent should have to bury their child."  The possesive pronoun should have been his or her, but I guess it was easier to use their.  It drives me crazy.   Other than that, I don't have any major issues.  When I see mistakes on internet posts I tend to attribute it to people writing quickly.  If I have a memo or brief to turn in I'll proofread, but I don't really do that for I-dog posts.    Also, grammar rules are really complicated and they change all the time.  I think all of the posts in this thread, including mine, have broken some sort of grammar rule (don't start sentences with conjunctions, don't end sentences with prepositions, etc).  English can be a complicated language. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. • DumDog Posted : 4/29/2007 2:03:48 PM i'm not so much a nazi about it.... i just make sure my own spelling is decent. but then again i also have spell check set up to underline wrong spellings. most of the time its not misspelling so much as it is typing too fast and i skip letters or jumble them up.
