Any other grammar/spelling ***?

    • Gold Top Dog
Looks like maybe I offended a few people? I wasn't trying to, just wondering if anyone else noticed these things.

Breaking grammar rules doesn't usually bother me, I'm sure I do it alllll the time. It's really mostly spelling, and really blatant things. I've never taken a formal grammar or spelling class in my life (I only went to kindergarten and first grade, I was homeschooled after that), so I guess it is genetic.

There are many young posters on this page, and I don't feel it is appropriate correct them publicly.

I don't think I've ever corrected anyone on here, have I? That's why I didn't post specific misspellings that bother me (and believe me, there are several on this forum). I was just noticing things like "do to" instead of "due to", and wondering if others noticed these things as well. It doesn't make me dislike the poster, it just bothers me. I'm sure there are plenty of things that bother you. [;)]

I don't want every post on here to be in formal essay form or something. Certainly I don't do anything like that. I just notice blatant misspellings. Sometimes it seems like the ADULTS on here are spelling words fownettikly. [:D] I don't always know how to spell things, but I usually look them up or spell check.

Typos and shorthand don't bug me.  It's using the same misspelling over and over and over and over...

    Sorry if I offended anyone.

Edit: I don't understand how my annoyances could make anyone self-conscious about posting if I never correct them?? Now I'm a little annoyed at you all being annoyed.. LOL! I'm also not just talking about on this message board. I'm talking about "real life" too. Sheesh.

I posted a thread like this once xD  People got snarky about it *rofl*

I too make typos, we all do, but common errors really annoy the CRAP out of me.  You do not "Wonder through the woods."  You "wander through the woods." WANDER!  Not wonder WANDER! *eyetwitch*

That one just bugs me so much because it's such a common error.  I will also admit that I am one of those people that abuses the comma.  I think that's the RPGer in me, because in RPGs, commas signify when you're taking a breath in your speech.  So, I use a lot of commas.

The other thing is, internet rules have changed a LOT of the ways we speak and type.  In school, we would be using indentation to mark new paragraphs.  Now, it is common practice not only on the internet, but in business letters, to simply hit enter, and start a new paragraph that way.  It is rare for me to see a new paragraph started these days with an indentation, rather than with a space between them.

Oy vey, what's the world coming to? xD

I have a real problem with their/thier. It just never looks right to me so I go back and forth.[;)]

Other than that I think I'm pretty good. The ones that bug me are the people that obviously don't care whether or not I can read it. Proof reading isn't difficult. Also when people come into a 3 page debate and post randomly without taking time to read at least some of the thread.[:@]

I dislike it more when people intentionally turn words into shortcuts so they don't have take the time to type everything correctly. I can't read or understand those posts easily and tend to gloss over them.

And I tend to take their advice less seriously....

Yes, it does bother me...but that's just the teacher in me.

in real life, i am a TERRIBLE nazi.  when i see things IN PRINT that have grammatical or spelling errors, i get furious.  in particular, i'm bothered by notes that bosses leave at work, because i feel that people in power have a responsibility to present well, and i have a hard time respecting people who misuse "big" words.  example; a sign posted at one of my last jobs:

"put all parts sintered at 500 degrees aside for inspection.  put all other parts in their perspective places."[:@]

on the boards, though, if i can understand what's intended i don't care so much.  but i will admit that the posts with NO punctuation give me fits.  i can't understand them, and i find it hard to respect the opinions presented in them.  emails and chats, who cares? unless the email is formal, and if an email is that formal, i feel it should be sent as a hard copy anyway.

recently,i was going over my husband's resume, which was assembled for him by a representative of the trade school he attended, and i found it riddled with spelling and grammatical errors.  i was horrified!  this is a resume!  this is someone trying to get a JOB, and it was someone's JOB to put it together properly...[:@]x2...

having said that, there are words that i routinely spell incorrectly- "maintanence"[:'(]-- WTF, i don't know why, but i can't get it.  and the spell check provided here doesn't work for me....

edit to fix typographical error, LOL... the irony is astounding![:D]

What does WTF mean?  What I noticed from Badrap's post is that when 'CAPS' are not used I zoom through the post, that is I read it really fast and in one breath.  Although the punctuation 'period' ends a sentence, the capital letter starts a sentence.  But its ok with me because I look at as a internet writing style and of course its Badrap, a good gal.

It never dawned on me that it means that.  [  [sm=vomit03.gif]WTF]   Don't you think its offensive?

The day my dogs worry about my spelling and grammar,I will go ahead and worry about it.Typos are my biggest problem and I do occasionaly have grammar issues.

REALLY bad grammar and spelling can make a poster look less intelligent, but without actually knowing the person,I think its pretty petty to judge someone. If a post bothers someone that badly,I would think it would be better to pass on it,or at least PM the person in private.

Maybe a spell check on the board would be a good tool.

Ahaha, wtf is one of those things that I carry over from online to real life. I actually say "double-you tee eff". Often. It's sad. But, wtf is just wtf to me now. It doesn't necessarily mean what the .... . It just means wtf. [:D]

I don't say "ell oh ell" yet, thankfully. THAT would be terrible. [8D]
    • Gold Top Dog
    Don't you think its offensive?

No xD I use it all the time.  I find it hilarious and quite a useful acronym.  Especially when I'm ranting to my friend Salem about men.

"Dude, WTF is wrong with him!?  I mean SERIOUSLY!  Who DOES THAT!?"

ETA: I say double you tee eff and oh em gee IRL too! LOL!

Don't feel alone.  That totally drives me nuts.

I had to learn what the internet acroynyms mean and I translate them into real words.  So I am not where you are yet and it may be years before that happens.  Beside, the word in that sentence makes the emotional content absolutely meaningless.  I am not arguing for arguing sake but I don't cuss and I don't see why when that cuss phrase is freely used I should have that word presented to me.  Isn't there a smiley that can convey the same emotional content message?

Since we are all human, we all screw up sometimes and that doesn't bother me....much.  I can't spell my way out of a wet paper bag and when things look wrong I often know it, but not always.  It used to really bug me, but I've gotten more used to it.

What REALLY does bug me is the internet shorthand.  b4 u go 2 c....that sort of thing bugs the living snot out of me.  And the posters who clearly don't give a rodents rear end whether or not they can be understood.

What the heck is xD...and there is another one Hsoemthing-or-other......

Don't answer that!  I am really proud of myself for making up my own interpretation when I come by these odd codes that only the poster knows.  Let me keep that.
