Burning Man

    Burning Man

Until I checked out the link from the other thread I had never heard of this. Is it common knowledge in the states? My friend had never heard about it either. So I'm thinking I'm not the only one up here that is clueless about it. I skimmed through most of the site and totally want to go! Except for not being able to take my dogs (I probably wouldn't anyway with Crusher's reactivity and Onyx not liking people lol) it sounds like quite the experience.

BTW What are green men? Are we talking Martians?

Burning Man is a really great dish at our favorite sushi restaraunt.[:D]  YUM, it really is great.

Other than that I must have missed a bunch cause I have no idea what your talking about lol.[8D]

They have it every year in Reno, Nevada which is about an hour or so from here.  I've known a few people who've gone and it sounds, well...interesting [;)]

There is a guy in my program who goes every year. He claims he has lots of anonymous sex with random women. He's a bit slimey as you could guess. I'm not sure I believe him :) Other then that, I don't know much about it!

Yeah, it's pretty well known in creative and alternative communities, especially along the west coast, especially in CA. There are a lot of people who travel to the states to participate, too. It's like the required trip to mecca for people living alternative lifestyles [:)]. I know a bunch of Eurpoeans who settled here in CA after having come for a visit to "the playa."

A lot of the people who are heavily involved and live related lifestyles, year-round (sustainable, creative, anarchic), tend to keep it on the lowdown, not advertising, just welcoming kindred spirits who wander in. (see ottoluv's post above and you can imagine why. Some of the core participants and founders don't even go anymore because that slimey tourist quotient has gotten too high.) There are "Burning Man" style arts and living communities in various locations, lots along the west coast, who have smaller festivals throughout the year. Huskymom, I bet you could find some in Canada.

Even though it's a creative event, and the scale of art there blows so much "fine arts" away, "the artworld" doesn't take it seriously and mostly ignores it. That's why I teach my art students about it, to make sure they know it's there.

It was on the Cover of National Geographic several years ago. But other than that, I don't see it hitting the news much. The caravans of cars driving there from LA and SF are really something. "Art cars", tricked out RVs, military vehicles ... lots of gleeful eye candy!

I saw this thread at the top of the page and i litterally spit out my soda.

I'm headed out to black rock city (tha'ts what it's called)  this August.

Its described as "creative self expression" in the middle of the desert. People of all shapes, colors and sizes are out there in costumes and sharing the love with one another. Gift giving is prominent, (no money is allowed on the Playa except to buy ice) and costumes are not a must-have, but definitely a good thing.
you camp out there, in tents and RV's. There's music and bead making, every year has a theme.

Surviving the elements of the desert is one of the hardest parts- it's 110+ in the middle of the day and down to as low as 30 at night.

The media compares it to a mondern day Woodstock, and yea there is drugs, sex and rock and roll, but its generally the "hippie" thing with big peace love and happyness.

PM me if anybody wants to know more about it.

Have known about Burning Man for many years now - and have thought about going, but never got it together!  We've dreamed of art we'd creae and share, though and that's always fun.  Have several friends who've been and also attended a presentation of a documentary film and talk hosted by the "founder"!

My friend went a couple of years ago and told me all about it.  It sounded fun, but at the same time it didn't.  I think you would meet so many interesting and great people.  But he said that when he was walking around some girl just came up and kissed him without even saying hi.  That's something I would not be ok with.

On MSN this week in pictures they had some great photos a coupld of years ago.  I bet it would be easy to find if you just knew the month it takes place.

The site says its always the week before Labour Day up to and including labour Day Weekend.

So nobody answered my question on the Green Men. Thats the theme this year.

and does anyone know how much tickets cost? Apparently my kids would be free, IF I decided to take them.[;)] But the site doesnt say how much a ticket is.

It also says no films or video. You mean you can't take pictures? It goes on to say that you cant use pictures for public display... so you can take pics but not use them on a website or something? A little confused on that. I would totally want pics of something like that.

    website:http://www.burningman.com/

tickets:http://tickets.burningman.com/ (Newsflash! The $195, $225 and $250 level tickets are SOLD OUT! $280 tickets are still available.)

Oh, you certainly *can* take pics! Google images "burning man" see what comes up! What website were you looking at?
    • Gold Top Dog
The first one you have listed in the previous post. In the FAQ section it states no film or video. I'm assuming you just cant take proffesional photos without permission then? Or Video? I know media has to report to someone or other if they want to cover the event.
    • Gold Top Dog
I knew about it because of a feature article in Rolling Stone magazine a few years back.  Not my ball of wax, but hey, whatever floats your boat!
    • Gold Top Dog
In the FAQs it says you cannot take pictures unless you're part of the approved media group.  I'm sure people do, but I'm betting that some folks don't take kindly to it if they see you doing it.  The FAQs has all the info regardng ticket prices, etc.

Wowza, Huskymom, I googled it and looked at a few pics, I would NOT recommend taking your kids ha ha ha
    • Gold Top Dog
hahaha! i don't think I would want to take my kids anyway. Seems like kind of a drunkfest and I wouldn't feel comfy drinking much at all if my kids were there. I don't do drugs but I like to drink. Only if I know I don't have to get up with my kids in the morning(or thoughout the night) though. I'd much rather leave them with my parents for the week. [:D]
