Yeah, it's pretty well known in creative and alternative communities, especially along the west coast, especially in CA. There are a lot of people who travel to the states to participate, too. It's like the required trip to mecca for people living alternative lifestyles [

]. I know a bunch of Eurpoeans who settled here in CA after having come for a visit to "the playa."
A lot of the people who are heavily involved and live related lifestyles, year-round (sustainable, creative, anarchic), tend to keep it on the lowdown, not advertising, just welcoming kindred spirits who wander in. (see ottoluv's post above and you can imagine why. Some of the core participants and founders don't even go anymore because that slimey tourist quotient has gotten too high.) There are "Burning Man" style arts and living communities in various locations, lots along the west coast, who have smaller festivals throughout the year. Huskymom, I bet you could find some in Canada.
Even though it's a creative event, and the scale of art there blows so much "fine arts" away, "the artworld" doesn't take it seriously and mostly ignores it. That's why I teach my art students about it, to make sure they know it's there.
It was on the Cover of National Geographic several years ago. But other than that, I don't see it hitting the news much. The caravans of cars driving there from LA and SF are really something. "Art cars", tricked out RVs, military vehicles ... lots of gleeful eye candy!
