    Sick 2 year old. HELP!

My sister called me and said that her daughter was sick.  Throwing up but no fever.  She cannot hold anything down.  What can help with this?  She has given her that Pedialite but it just came back up.  I haven't had this problem with my daughter so I don't know what to tell her.  Any advice???[&o]

Well...aside from going to a doctor, which I'm sure she'll do as soon as she can...see if she can get her two year old to take *tiny* sips of the Pedialyte. I mean, itty bitty teaspoon sized sips. When I was young I got sick once and couldn't hold anything down if it was larger than that. I hope they both feel better soon!

How long has it been going on? If its just been an hour or so, perhaps something upset her stomach. If its been longer and she can't even hold liquids down, she could be at risk for dehydration. Is she lethargic? Typically if a kid keeps puking things up but is still full of vim and vinigar, you don't really need to worry. If she's sleepy, stiff, sore, or anything uncharacteristic, I would get her up to Emerg.

If she has no other symptoms, hopefully it's just something she ate, or a 12 hr stomach flu.  The main thing I'd worry about is dehydration, if she can't even keep liquids down.  If she's still puking in the morning, she should probably go to ER for some fluids and a check of what could be causing it.  Does she have diarrhea too?

If you stop adminstering EVERYTHING...and give the stomach time to rest many times that will do the trick. She cannot dehydrate if there's nothing coming up...if there's no fever...I'd simply withhold ALL fluids and such for 12 hours then small sips 3 hours apart.

Watch for sunken eyes and inability to urinate or dark urine, that's dehydration.

I put my son in the hospital because I simply didn't withhold and kept offering after several hours...it needs to be longer. I kept giving because I worried about dehydration...he kept throwing up and got dehydrated...and we ended up in the hospital for 3 days on an IV....poor babyman.

If it's projectile vomiting and is repeating, get the kid to the doc - may have swallowed an object.  If it's just an upset tummy, rest the gut so nothing comes up (the child can suck an ice cube perhaps), then start giving bland things like pedialyte, Gatorade, flat cola or ginger ale.  If the liquid stays down, add toast or other carbs, like plain pasta.  That's what my doc prescribes for vomiting from a viral GI upset.  Her MD can easily check for bacterial illness if she sends in a stool sample, or if the child isn't prepared to cooperate, the doc can do the rectal swab routine.

Our gandma watches her during the day and she said that she had one bout of diarrhea today.  She was perfect this morning and through out the day but this afternoon, she started puking.  She will be asleep and wake up screaming then after about 1 minute, she pukes.  I feel awful.  Angela is only 2 and I know that the whole deal is scaring her.  I told Jenn that it kinda sounds like a touch of food poison.  Could that be right?  I talked to her about an hour ago and she had to go since Angela was fixing to get sick again.  I haven't heard back from her so I'm guessing that all is well.

Maybe it's just me but my kid would be at the doctor if that happened. Waking up screaming and then puking? If the doc wasn't open I would go to the ER. I don't take chances....

I wish my sis was that way.  Angela went to the doc last Friday and she had an ear infection and she was behind by 6 shots.  I almost dropped the phone when Jennifer told me that.  I love her to death but how hard is it to get your child the shots they need?  Jennifer took her back Monday and got the shots(our mom paid for them)  Madison always got her shots when they were due.  Hell, I took Maddy to the ER when she was 2.  She fell and slammed her nose on our bedframe.  It was "busted"  All the doctor did was tell me to give her Tylenol and then he charged me $350.00 but I still took her.  When it comes to my child, nothing is too much.  That's Jennifer's excuse.  Doctors are too expensive.  It makes me sooo mad that I could just slap her!  I'd rather have a doctor's bill than a dead child.

It's something like this that makes me thrilled to live in Canada.
Granted we have to pay for dental and eye care but our medical is free.

One trick to control volume of intake is to make the Pedilyte a popsicle.  This is also novel and in some cases feels better (cools a raw throat).  It seems like a trip to urgent medical care facility or the er may be in order if this is still occurring today.

I'm going through this right now with my 2-year old.  We're going on day 4 and she is slowly getting better (after a trip to the ER).

If  baby is vomiting repeatedly, lay off the liquids for a while.
When you do give liquids, give Pedialyte in a medicine dropper once every 5-10 minutes.
Give Popsicles whenever they will take them.  I buy Popsicle brand Mighty Minis, they're small and take a while to melt.
Make sure you are getting wet diapers.  Dry diapers = possible dehydration.

    Signs of dehydration are:

    Lack of tears when crying
    dry diapers
soft spot (fontanel) on head sunken in
    dry lips
inside of mouth is not moist
    lethargic, sleeps a lot
    irritable
    lack of tears when crying

I took my daughter to the ER Friday night because she hadn't had a wet diaper all day and all she would do was sleep.  I had previously gone through this with my oldest and she  ended up having rotovirus and had to be hospitalized for dehydration.  I wasn't taking a chance this time, so we went.  They rehydrated her with fluids and after a few hours she went home.  Her blood and urine didn't show signs of dehydration, but she did need then fluid IV as she was beginning to refuse liquids.

Tell your sister that if that little one seems dehydrated to get her to the ER.  Dehydration comes on so quickly in little ones and it could be deadly.
It's not fun to watch your little one get an IV....but the dr. said I did everything I could at home and the ER trip was necessary.  Good luck and I hope  your niece feels better soon.

Does he have any abdominal pain or is it just vomiting?  If there are truly no other symptoms (fever, abdominal pain, lethargy, or diarrhea) you can wait for 12 hours or so to see if it improves.  If any of the other symptoms are present you need to go to urgent care or the emergency room.  2 year olds are very hard to assess and it is the prime age for intusucception and appendicitis.  Frequently kids won't complain of any abdominal pain, but it's there.  Have her lie on her back, legs strait out.  Push around about 1 inch deep and watch her face and if her muscles tighten when you push down.  As for dehydration, it does come on rather quickly in kids, diarrhea in addition to vomiting can make it much worse.  How is she feeling now?

there has been a nasty virus going around lately. when i was in the hospital having the baby back in March we let our oldest (1 1/2 yrs old) stay with one of my cousins and her three kids while i was gone. When he came back he wasnt acting right. everyone was worried that he had been traumatized by being away from us so unexpectedly and for so long.

Well, it turned out that he was sick. the morning after he came home by husband had to get up at 3am to check on him.. the poor kid had puked all over the place in his sleep and was crying. that was just the first symptom. a couple hours later he had explosive diarrhea.. his diaper couldnt contain just one bout of it. any time he went it was going to be a huge mess. no way around it.  i thought maybe he had eaten something he shouldnt have and once he purged his system he would be ok. i couldnt take care of him myself so my husband had to do it. our original  plan was for me to stay at my inlaws to get rest and  take care of the littlest one, but  thats not what happened.  Fortunately my husband was between jobs so for the most part he  took care of our  oldest.  But when he brought him over to visit me and  his grandparents is when i realised it wasnt food poison. it was after two days of this and he was still as sick as ever. he acted normal, but was a little sluggish in some things. THEN i got sick.... i had eaten pizza that night, and about midnight i got sick to my stomach and threw up. Let me tell you, throwing up after a C-section is about the worst feeling in the world.
I was afraid to go to bed that night for fear of bleeding to death in my sleep! The next day i was feeling worse and was afraid to eat anything at all. i settled for hot tea, no caffeine(my doctor said that can make matters worse with your stomach) all that day i just stayed in bed and chewed on some ice chips and managed to eat a Popsicle.
By that evening i was feeling better, but i had the diarrhea. the next day i ate a big bowl of cereal and felt almost back to normal.... but then my MIL had the virus.... then my husband's oldest daughter got it, then my own mom.... The only people that didnt get sick were my FIL and my husband - and the new born thank God.

everyone had the same symptoms. throwing up, diarrhea, then constipation then gas....

the annoying part was when i wanted to get my son the pedialite pops.... my MIL is a bit of a know it all. she called one of her know it all friends and asked her advice... she didnt recommend the pops, just give water... but my son was refusing the water. Fortunately my FIL listens to THE MOTHER of the child. he went out and bought them for me. i would have gone myself but was unable to drive.
Warning about Pedialite Popsicles... when giving them to child younger than two, make sure they are slushy, not frozen because there is a risk for choking if they bite off a piece too big. Other than that, they worked great. i'm a big fan of them.
I hope this kid is better now. i hate hearing about it when they get sick. and its a shame her mom neglects the doctor's visits. i know its expensive, we dont have insurance yet and we have an ENORMOUS bill, but i would rather have that than my kid getting deathly ill from preventable sicknesses.

Well, Angela seems better today.  You could tell she wasn't back to normal but she wasn't throwing up anymore.  She was also eating a little.  I saw her and I almost started crying.  She had thrown up so many times list night that her poor lips were raw.  I had Jennifer put some chapstick on her.  Angela took a good nap this evening and when she woke up, she looked a lot better.  Jennifer said that last night, Angela would still be asleep when she threw up.  Never heard of that before.  Thanks everyone!
