It's a really beautiful movie if you're into dark fairy tales.   I didn't find it to be anything like Labyrinth (which I loved when I was a kid).  I thought Pan's Labyrinth was robbed when it didn't win the Oscar for best foreign film.  You might not like it if you're squemish or can't handle violence.

I agree...but I have to say that the "Lives of Others" that one is OUTSTANDING...a must see if you haven't done so already and you like foreign films!

I am so happy that someone else actually saw Pans Labyrinth![:)]

I think I'm a bit biased because I really like the director of Pan's Labyrinth.  He does a great job even without "deep" material. It pains me a bit to say it, but I actually enjoyed Hellboy and Blade II.  As far as foreign films go, I think last year was a good year.  I also thought Volver was a good movie.

i dont know if its still playing in the city, and i know the small towns wont be showing it... i'm checking the news paper's movie theatre listings now. the official sight said its coming out on DVD in May... so since it isnt May yet, maybe i can still see it on the big screen... MAYBE.. so far from what i've read it is rather brutal and graphic.. but its also a fantasy theme which doesnt bother me as much for some reason.... but i dont like films where kids are harmed.... if any of that takes place, tell me now please. i am a great big wuss when it comes to kids.. so bad that i cant even listen to or read the news if someone is hurt. does becoming a mom do that to ya or am i just weird?
As for subtitles.... i dont care really. i didnt realise until just now that two of my favourite movies are in subs.. Longest Day and Brotherhood of the Wolf. The only problem i had with brotherhood was the cinematography was absolutely stunning, but i couldnt enjoy it on the big screen because i was reading.... boo! but i have seen it so many times now that i practicly understand french so i can enjoy the film.

i dont know how i missed this one! last year we were living with my mom while we were getting our house built, she has satelite and all the movie channels... i never once saw advertising for this. infact i thought it was another RPG computer game when i saw the title..

i forgot to say.... Fairy Tales were never meant to be Tinker Bell pretty. i'm kinda nerdy in this area.... i loooooove the old time tales, which is why i like Labyrinth. "I thought fairies did nice things like grant wishes?" "Huh! Shows what you know!"
yeah those stories were invented to scare the pants off children.... i dunno... i may go see it anyway, i'll just have to leave my husband at home. he and i are polar opposites with this kinda stuff.

I'll PM you answer to your question so the movie isn't spoiled for anyone else who might be reading the thread and would like to see the movie.

thanks dlg81  i appriciate the heads up on that. my kids are too young to go to see movies right now so i'm not concerned so much about scarying them. its me that i'm worried about!
This looks like a period film too. I wonder why no one makes modern day fairy tales, taking place now, or has that been overdone by Harry Potter?

by the way, its still playing in my city!
...tonight at seven actually... hmmmmm this could get tricky...

Please go see it on the big screen!  I found the imagery to be very beautiful.  It won't be the same if you rent it on dvd.  You can come back here and yell at me if you find it too graphic.
    • Gold Top Dog
i wouldnt dare yell at you!
i used to be much more .... whats the word.... less squeemish? i guess.. when it came to films like this.. well not like THIS, but horror/gore type films. I was a little kid when i saw the Freddy movies, and Child's Play, Pet Cemetary and Cujo, to name a few.... it didnt phase me then. I saw Pink Floyd's the Wall a few years ago and it didnt bother me much, but now i dont think i can even watch that.
Maybe i just think too much... it is make believe after all. or so we think lol this film seems to be pretty accurate towards the way fairytales were origionally written. they were meant to be scary, that was how people protected their children.
Instead of saying "if you fall in the well, you'll drown" they said "if you go near the well a big hair troll will jump out and eat you!"  hmm.. i dunno. just a thought.
    i wanna see it now!!

I can't wait to say this.... it's not out here till Sept.  Well, I say "can't wait" but would rather see it "properly" at the pictures when it's released instead of a dodgy pirate or download... but I am looking forward to it.  Very intrigued.

not meaning to go too far OT but what are some other films like this?
i heard that Lady in the Water is a type of modern fairytale.. but i havent seen it yet. my cousin and her family loved it and said my family would like it too. i've only seen the previews and it was mildly intriguing. is it Ron Howard's daughter playing the "Lady" part or someone else?

This movie was beautiful. I absolutely LOVED it. Do see it. It's well worth it.

You're very right about the original point of fairy tales.  Can you imagine Disney making an accurate version of Cinderella (in the original version the step-sisters cut off parts of their feet to fit into the glass slipper) or the Little Mermaid (where the witch cut out the mermaids tongue before she gave her legs)?

Even the song rock-a-bye baby is a little bit creepy.  Should we really be singing a song about a baby falling out of a tree to help kids go to sleep?  We're a strange species. [;)]

lol at least we dont eat our young though. and considering how bad some kids act, even that surprises me.
