the GOOD part of working with women...

    • Gold Top Dog
i would like to add here that i don't think men are easier to work with.

men are only easier to work with if you are a WOMAN.

sorry, girls, but i really think that's true.  and, sadly, i think it's true for all the wrong reasons.  which could be why women are so sh**ty to each other.... add men to the equation and shelly has hit it right on the head--- subconcious competition.  call it evolutionary, call it societal, call it whatever you want- women are trained to compete for men.. and men are trained to compete for women.

i applaud billy for keeping it lighthearted, but i actually WOULD appreciate some of the men around here giving some perspective about what they feel working around other men... i know MY husband complains about backstabbing, laziness, poor work ethic, butt-kissing, etc at his job, and he works with men.  he really thinks they're a bunch of jerks, just like we're complaining about here...
    • Gold Top Dog
I can sympathize... I work at a (formerly) all women job, and it is catty catty catty. It's hard to take a compliment from someone when you know they'll likely say the opposite when you're not around.

We got a new manager a few weeks ago, and he is male... you can bet that caused some drama! It's really nice when he's there, because everyone behaves. When he's not, it's a different story, but I'm sure things will iron out!

That is interesting Sara that your Dh says that …mine says the exact opposite. He has worked construction, technician work, engineering and even did 7 years on a sub with only men and has never come close to going through anything like I do daily.

He just got a female engineer as a “cube mate” and doesn#%92t like working with her. He says all the guys have to walk on eggshells around her and it is the same with the only other 2 women that work in his huge engineering department.

I would be VERY curious to know what other guys think, perhaps my DH#%92s situation is a rare one.… (although there are FEW men to ask here on idog…) Billy, perhaps you can share your views on females in the work place since you have been a manager over a few (although I would PROBABLY suggest that you NOT tell the story about “Colorado Joyce” showing up at your manager#%92s meeting…[;)])

Ladies, what do your husbands say about working with other men?  [:)]

i also noticed at my male dominated jobs that there always seemed to be some type of drama going on between the guys, like, "bob hates steve because steve works too slow."  or "hahaha let's all go rag on bob because his wife left him for steve" or various other more than half serious jabs at each other's manhood.

to say that it reaches the same scale as what goes on between women.... well, that may be a bit of a stretch.  but, of course, i can't *legally* go into the men's room, so i really don't have any idea.  can i?  i mean is there a law against me going in the men's room?  LOL.....

The only thing my fiance says about the guys at work is that a couple of them are lazy, ok...maybe just one of them.

Well, with me being a college student right now, my job history isn't really very deep. I can say though that I prefer working with men. Yeha, we do make "jabs at each other's manhood". I think all guys do. It's just who we are. We make fun of each other about all sorts of things, and get made fun of in return. It's usually all in good fun. In my experience, guys are more likely to "fight" out a serious confrontation than to go behind someone's back. I know I for one, prefer a face-to-face confrontation with someone rather then a bunch of gossiping BS. The only gripe that usually had with men was when I felt they weren't pulling their load. I would feel that I'm pulling my fair share, so they should be doing the same.

On the other hand, I sometimes really enjoyed working with women. I always got a kick out of them gossiping about each other. For some reason, I found it hilarious. But sometimes they would drag me into it. That's when I hated working with them. I will not confront a woman in the same way I will man. So I could never resolve the situations in the wya I feel most comfortable.

This is my DH's only gripe about working with certain men..

But sometimes they would drag me into it. That's when I hated working with them.

This is one of MY biggest gripes.. I stay the hell out of stuff that doesn't have anything to do with me, but because everyone considers me their "friend" simply because I am nice to everyone I work with, both sides want to drag me into it. I hate that and have to end up telling folks that I don#%92t want to be part of it. They seem to take that statement “personal” and before I know it everyone is mad at me and I haven#%92t done a single thing to anyone...I have only tried to keep to myself.

I have noticed that in many cases that having a guy or two in the mix really does keep women on better behavior (that is UNLESS the guy is really cute and there are several women competing over his attention… then all hell breaks loose!). Guys in the workplace that are even keeled and “everyone#%92s friend” and nothing more are actually very beneficial.  ;Plus it is one less set of hormones screwing up the office (although…once women#%92s cycles sync with one another there is ALWAYS chocolate to be had when you most need it...I guess THAT is another good thing about working with women…men don#%92t have the necessary chocolate and other sweets when you most need it !)  [;)]

Ngoldenm- thanks you for your “guys” perspective on this topic! [:)]

I have worked with women as bosses and coworkers

I have also worked with men as bosses and coworkers.

When I was working with the women, who were all older by 8 + years,I found it very interesesting..Though they got alonog with each other, there were times when barely a word was spoken all day,and the silence was awkward as hell..They seemed to sense when it was wise not to say too much..I think for the most part they were pretty in tune with their cycles..lol

One day,My boss,a small red haired Irish woman in her mate 30's came in to the office, took her keys(which must have weighed a good couple of pounds)and hurled them against the wall from about 15 feet, hitting the wall about 2 feet in front of my face as I walked into the room.If this had been a man,I would have gotten in his face ,boss or not.Instead I looked at her and said"NEVER do that again!"lol

I think her frustration at working with a hot young stud for months and not being able to have her way led to her frustration...lol..Shelly can back me up on this..right?

Mark...how much are you paying Billy for the "smarmy bastard" lessons?
Apparently NOT enough.. you can do better than that I am sure![;)]   As for the throwing of the keys… I have never thrown anything at anybody… I have a much more “even temperament” than that.  DH actually says that I am about the least “hormonal, bitchy woman like” of any woman he has ever met… and BEFORE you go making some wise crack about how I must be a “guy” then, let me assure you I am still very feminine…  just not bitchy and high strung like some women are capable of.

So ..I would not know anything about your “key throwing” experience…[:)]

I've worked around women a few times. They were usually easy to work with. There are not that many women electricians. I don't have much time in an office of women to really notice any problems. Working with mostly men, it depends with whom you are working. Some are out to scramble to the top, no matter who they have to walk on. Others are just trying to do their job. Our biggest problem can be that everyone thinks their way is the right way. Also, when the pressure is on, people believe in letting it roll down hill. So, they put pressure on everyone else so it looks like they are doing their job. And the managers at the top think that expecting the impossible and stomping on everyone is the proper form of management, which just makes them look like idiots in my book. I don't play politics well. I usually just keep quiet so that I don't hurt someone's feelings.

Ron I wonder if the fact that they are electricians is a big difference...

also any bad experiences working with men?

I will go one step further and say I do not tend to pick friends from the women's team either. I prefer the companionship of men..mainly because I like sports, like to swear, drink beer, and don't tend to lie about what someone looks like when they say "does this look alright on me?"and I find high pitched giggling much less amusing than farting or burping the national anthem. [;)]

Working? I prefer to work with men. Less drama unless they are all hot after another female co worker..lol...then it get's annoying but slightly amusing.

there are those here at idogwho have compared my brash and frank manner to that of a guy... i think partly this developed from having been almost completely surrounded by men for the last 15 years.  i keep men as company mostly, too.

I work with 2 men & 19 women. I really like working with the guys & I can actually say that I am friends with the guys. I absolutely hate working with women! My secretary is great because, like me, she avoids most of the drama. I hate the fact that on any given day there is at least one “fight” going on between co-workers. I struggle to keep up from day to day. To make matters worse, I am off on Wednesdays, so when I arrive back at the office on Thursday it takes me at least 2 hours just to figure out who is pissed at who.

Admittedly, I do like to stir up a bit of trouble from time to time, so I guess that I shouldn‘t complain to much.

Billy- this is exactly why I could never be lesbian... perhaps YOU need to reconsider your sexual orientation???[:)]

I have thought about it and have decided to remain a lesbian.  [;)]
