How many pets...

    • Gold Top Dog
    Are all of them pets that you keep?

    All of what? The rats?  When I was breeding rats, I bred for health, temperament, and conformation. I bred show quality ratties. [:)] All of my breeding stock came from rats of known background....from reputable breeders. I developed my own line over the years of exceptionally healthy rats...tumor free, very low instances of myco flare-ups, virtually NO genetic health issues, and no genetic temperament issues either. My rats were wonderful. [:)] Reputable rat breeders screen their homes very, VERY carefully and do not let any of their babies go as feeders. My adoptions process was long and pretty arduous, and I had to get to know potential adopters pretty well before I'd let them anywhere near their babies. Rat breeders have to develo a relationship with their adopters and most of us require weekly - monthly updates on the rats that we adopt out for the entirety of their lives. It's necessary to watch for genetic health and temperament issues...since the health testing that is available to dog breeders is not available to us. Obviously, I didn't breed my rescue rats...since most of them were of unknown background. But all of my rescue rats were put through the exact same adoption process as the rats that I bred. I no longer update my rattery website, but heres a link to it. [linkhttp://www.ratsiclesrattery.bravehost.com]www.ratsiclesrattery.bravehost.com[/link]. On the adoption page, you'll find a description of my adoption process, my adoption policies, and the contracts that all adopters were to sign. All of my rats were pets only, and all of them went on very strict NO breeding contracts. The oly rats released as breeders were a very select few that I bred myself that went to other reputable breeders that I knew very well.

    Now that I am no longer an official breeder, I simply intend to do 1 litter a year to keep the lines going that I worked so hard to create. I'll keep most of the babies, and any that I don't keep will be adopted out to a few select people. So yes, all of thema re most definitely pets. [:)]

    If you meant the chickens...2 of them are pets, the other 4 are layers/food.

    Waterfaller- What a gorgeous exotic group you have!!! I absolutely love tropical fish/living corral and someday I'd really like to have a setup like yours. One of the tanks will have seahorses. I am fascinated by and in love with those little fishes! I've done a lot of research on them and I definitely can't keep up with them right now, but someday! And leopard geckos are my favorite lizard. I held one once and he was soft as velvet. [:)] Edited to add, was Heartly named for the heart shape on his side? What a cute name for such a cute puppy!

    Anyway, my animals are:

    * 1 Shih Tzu
    * 2 Guinea Pigs
    * 1 Hedgehog

    Thanks so much Luvntzus! Seahorses are a very challenging fish to keep. I do keep a couple small ;pipefish in  my 90, an African Bluestripe, and a Dragonface pipe. If you decide to try it, make sure you buy tank raised.{I work in a reef store}
    Mr. Smiley is the coolest little laid back guy..I had fun setting up his home to be cute. I traded corals for him.[:D] Miss Sheba is our perpetual 2 year old...she is a very spoiled girl..she is a joy though! I bartered for her by working when I first started at the reef shop. She used to belong to Disney's Rainforest Cafe'.
    Yes, Heartly was named for his heart. Someone on a forum{might have been here..} suggested it. He is a handfull..Akita & lab.

    Yeah, from what I read, seahorses are extremely challenging. One site was like- seahorses aren't as hard as you might have heard to keep, you can actually have a 2 degree water temperature variation, they only need precise oxygen levels, very specific types of food in certain amounts, which by the way you'll need a separate tank to grow and take care of, 75 or so home medications to keep on hand, parasite control, specific nitrate levels....[:o] Of course that was an exxageration what I posted, but it's basically how overwhelmed I felt when I read about taking care of them. I do remember reading about how it's important to have a tank raised one because the wild caught ones aren't as healthy, harder to feed, get stressed out easily, etc. And that's another thing- being careful not to stress out a fish. lol I would have to choose one of the most high maintenance fishes out there. [:D]

    Sheba is gorgeous and that is TOO cool that she belonged to Disney!! I can imagine that she is almost like having a child because birds are so darn smart and mischievous! I love parrots but I'm not sure I could ever have one- I think I'd be out of my league with them. My favorite is the Lesser Sulfer Crested Cockatoo- they aren't quite as big and intimidating as some birds and I really like their cuddly personalities. Of course they're probably a little too dependent for me.

    With Heartly's breed mix and size, yeah I can imagine that he's a handful- but so very cute!

    Anyway, looks like a wrote a small novel... every once in awhile I do that. Oops. lol

    We have three dogs and care for a colony of feral cats. We've been taking care of them for several years now, and it seems the population has stabilized at an even dozen. Last year was the first year that there were no additions or losses.
