Fur and eating meat?

Hobby rancher won't raise chickens for you if you bought them and paid some for their care? There's a thought [;)]

Main difference there is that a child will grow eventually into doing thier own study, making their own choices and from there...upholding those ethics or forming their own different ones.

Exactly. A dog cannot change it's mind, and go back to it's carnivorous lifestyle. A human child CAN. I questioned everything, as a child. I wanted to know where each peice of food came from, and how it got on my plate. I picked apart every meal. I'm sure it got on my mom's nerves[:D] When I was a young teenager, I tried to go vegetarian several times, and failed (because I didn't know how). When I was 15 or 16, I went vegetarian for good. Now, I'm vegan, hopefully permanently. It seems to be working well for me, so far. The dog cannot decide that, for herself. She cannot hop in the car, and run to the grocery store for a package of chicken[;)]

IF I choose to have children, they will be allowed to eat whatever they want, and they will know where it came from. I wouldn't force my religion or my moral beliefs on a child, either. I don't do it to the dogs, LOL. They can believe whatever they want, as long as they behave decently.

And FWIW, Emma was vegetarian for quite some time, as an adolescent. She had some serious health problems that required her diet to be strictly regimented. She smelled AMAZING. I miss the sweet smells that came from her. When she started stabilizing, I added fish back in, and slowly, she's gotten back to a normal diet.

I think a lot now also has to do with the treatment of the animals we eat.  They are killed in a manner that is meant to be quick and painless where before the meat was practically ripped off the animal while it was almost alive.  If you ever read the novel "The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair it explains how things where done in the meat industry when this country was just starting out with big businesses.  It was because of this book that made people aware of this treatment and caused the FDA to develop, not only for the animals protection but for employees as well.

I buy a lot of my meat from a butcher and I also find the taste to be much fresher and gamier.  The meat from a butcher is cheaper and the one I go to gets their meat from local farmers, many of which do not use steroids and hormones in their livestock, in a way I'm also supporting the locals. I do buy meat occasionally from the supermarket but it's no where near the same as from the butcher.  I also get RMBs from the butcher which is really cheap as well.

I tried doing the vegetarian thing once and became really sick, my sister was the same way.  I don't eat meat for every meal though and could probably do it now that I know more about nutrition and forming complete protiens, but I have no desire to.  I couldn't imagine being vegan-cheese is far to importnat to me.

I also wear leather as many other types of products bother my skin and a leather jacket just looks good to me.  I don't own any fur, but if I saw something I really liked I would buy it second-hand.  The difference being I don't like how the fur industry does things and I wouldn't want to give them my money.  Buying second-hand is a great way to keep products out of landfills.  I would wear wool if I wasn't allergic to it.

I was a vegetarian for ten years. I became insulin-resistant and overweight. Turns out being vegetarian is just not a good eating style for my body. High protein and low carb is actually the best for me.

That being said, I can see both sides of the fence, having been on both sides!

I hate factory farming and will avoid those kinds of foods if I can. I do prefer wild caught salmon, gifts of moose, caribou and halibut and other wild game from my friends. I don't hunt. Sometimes I fish. I might get a slingshot and get a few spruce grouse this next fall. They are soooooo stupid and would be an easy meal. But I have no desire to go kill a moose or a caribou.

People up here hunt for food, and very few regular Alaskans do the trophy hunting business. That's mostly for tourists. Rich tourists. [:@] I do not believe in shooting predators for trophies, or to "protect" the moose populations. That's actually contrary to the health of the moose, anyway. But I digress.

I don't wear fur. It's just creepy to me. I was at a crafts fair last November near the furs booth. The more I looked at some of the fox furs and wolf furs the more it looked like someone had skinned Sofia and hung her up there.....it rather made me sick.

However I have no problems with folks who live in the very cold climes needing to wear furs. I just can't do it myself. As for fur coats and all that chi-chi baloney, I think people need to get a real life and stop being so insecure that they need to kill these kinds of animals to make themselves seem special.

i eat meat, minus pig and fish/seafood. they both just gross me out, especially pigs, with their pink skin, blue eyes, sweat and sunburns...little too much like people for me. although we still cook it in our household, other members of my family enjoy it.

i probably own leather items, if i do its not from purposefully going out and purchasing it. i prefer faux suede to anything, just because i like the texture and feel more, not for humane reasons. cows are going to die anyway, i think its wonderful that people use the hide for something rather than discard it. dh could not live without his leather jacket, even though it is 10 years old and been repaired too many times.

ETA: i do not eat chicken menstruation either...i mean eggs.

I eat very little red meat, mostly chicken and fish.  I do have a white coat with a mink collar, but DH bought it for me for Christmas just before we got married ... and that coat is 40 years old. I haven't worn it for quite awhile, as it doesn't seem to go with jeans and sneakers. I have leather walking shoes and Max has a leather leash. I don't think wool really counts, since the sheep don't have to die for it.

I eat meat, we love meat in this house. I buy leather purses and shoes. I do not wear fur, not my style.

hmmm.. I feel a bit ignorant when it comes to certain fibres.  Is cashmere "bad"?  and wool? I eat meat, but not much and I only buy from my butcher who in turn buys from a local farmer (no factory farmed meat).  But, I do eat in restaurtants quite a bit and have more leather boots, shoes and bags than I can even count - I guess that's supporting factory farming as well.  Depending on where you live and your lifestyle, it can be next to impossible to avoid all animal products.   I do the best I can with the knowledge I have and the lifestyle that I lead.  I do have one coat that has a fur trimmed hood (DH bought it for me years ago).  I wear it, but that's the first and last thing I will ever own that has animal hair on it.  It grosses me out too.

We do eat meat. DH loves anything that moves...or was once moving anyway. I'm not a huge meat fan, personally. I do enjoy the occasional burger or fried chicken, but I honestly gross myself out eating meat the majority of the time. I psych myself out constantly thinking of where that burger came from, and then I picture those big, sad cow eyes, and often cannot finish my meat. DH thinks I'm a nut, and I don't know why I constantly do it to myself, but that's me![8|]

I do wear leather, both of the boys' collars are leather, and we have leather seats in the car.

LMAO...Gee,I never thought about it that way...and I was going to make pork chops tonight!!!!!!

I eat meat, but as far as leather and fur goes, NO WAY!  it's too darn hot here in SE Texas...100% cotton for me!!!!

edited. OMG..I just saw the egg thing...won't be eatin' them any time soon either....

I'm ovo-lacto, too [:D]  I do try to use soy milk/cheese/egg beaters whenever possible, tho. Dogs eat kibble/raw diet (which makes me gag, but you can't argue with the fact it's good for them. I'm always getting compliments on their teeth.) and I love my leather purses and shoes. ... and saddles and bridles [:)

No fur.  At all. Distinction?  I'm not sure why I won't use fur, but will use leather.  But, I guess there is one for me.  For some reason soft, fluffy animal dying make my stomach turn. I will also not use anything animal testing was used for.

No fish.  Period.  Dogs don't get fish either.  I am horrified by the rate the ocean is being overfished.

I realize it makes no sense. [:D]

I'm a carnivore.  I love nothing more than a big, juicy slab of beef or a pork chop.  I do buy my meat from a local butcher that gets it from local farmers.  It's mostly because I like to support the local economy as much as possible.  I'm a bad person.  I love leather in any way I can get it.  I even have a mink coat.  It was my great grandma's.  I think it looks great with a pair of ratty old jeans & sneaks.

    Bash away.....

Just curious as to how many of us do wear fur or other animal products such as leather?  And how many eat meat vs not?  What are your feelings on this?

I don't wear fur.  I will wear leather.  I am an omnivore, if it's makes it's way to my plate it gets eaten.

My feelings on this:  I don't think fur is anything other than a luxury.  Leather helps to use the complete cow, thus justifying to me it's death.

As far as what others eat and don't eat:  It's none of my business, and my own beliefs are really none of theirs.
