Fur and eating meat?

I'm a pescatarian. [:)] My SO and I gave up meat about 8 months ago. Surprisingly this was his idea - a man whose favorite foods up until then had been ribs and chicken wings! - after he learned about shipping cattle at trucking school. I used to enjoy meat very much but since we left it behind neither of us miss it. We eat well, and actually giving up meat has spurred me to greater creativity in my cooking (my favorite recipe collection is the Moosewood Low Fat cookbook). It used to be all too easy to have a meal "center" around a slab of meat, and just have some veggies & carbs as filler. Now we try new veggies we've never had before, new grains, new recipes... there is a world of wonderful food outside the meat dept!

We kept seafood in our diet partly to ease the transition both mentally and physically. Being pescatarian makes eating out much easier, particularly in not-so-vegetarian Nebraska (they like their meat with a side of meat here). We don't eat seafood very often, mainly when we dine out or at family's houses. I am aware of a kind of ethical inconsistency to this... but we are "newborn" veggies and maybe we'll work toward eliminating seafood if we can. My position on eating animals is that it is natural, but we are an evolving species with a lot of food diversity and technology at our fingertips, and if we can afford to not eat meat it is a... worthy choice, let's say.

I did my research on vegetarianism because our health is very important... I read up on it and found that protein is extremely easy to get in a veggie diet; so is calcium. Most people who feel malnourished on a veggie diet are actually not getting enough B vitamins. Since my SO and I gave up meat we feel healthier, we have both lost weight (that we needed to lose), we have more variety in our diets, and we spend a lot less money on groceries.

I would never wear fur. I don't use/wear leather but to be honest I think it's more an aesthetic tendency than something I've made a conscious choice about. I have a kind of cheeseball association with leather as a fabric.

I am a total carnivore as well... I hate veggies and am not really fond of carbs in general (pasta, bread, etc.) other than sweets, my weakness. So I really rely on animal protein as far as eating goes. I also love leather & cashmere. I don't own any fur, but I'll most likely inherit my mom's big fur coat someday (more than 20 years old) & don't get people who'll egg/spray paint random people w/ fur coats on the street.

I don't think wool really counts, since the sheep don't have to die for it.

The wool industry can be pretty cruel. The sheep are bred to have lots of extra, wrinkly skin. They can get  nasty infections in their wrinkles. Urine and feces in the wool can cause some nastiness, as well. Improper shearing (read:quick) can cause severe injuries, especially  if the tendon on the back of the leg is caught in the shears.

To answer Christine, cashmere is wool from a certain animal, just like angora is wool from a fluffy bunny.

I eat meat, and wear leather, but not often on either account.   When my dad was a vegitarian I could go for weeks without meat, but now that my dad eats is, so do I just because mom always caters to what dad eats so when he didn't eat meat if we ate with him we didn't either.   I try to stay away from pig or fish though. I think I could become a vegitarian without a problem, just don't ask me to give up my bread or chocolate.

I really do not eat much meat much at all, whenever I eat it I can't help but think of what animal had to be killed. [:(]. So I could very easily become a vegetarian, and I probably will once I move out.
Plus, I really like vegtables, I eat almost every veggie there is.

I do have a purse that is leather, no leather shoes, that I can think of, of wait maybe some pairs of flip flops. I probabaly wouldn't buy a leather jacket.

And I do not wear any fur, I bought a sweater this winter and when I got home I realized it was 40% Angora....I used to have bunnies so that is probably why it bothers me. I just would not support the fur companies, plus it creeps me out...wearing something dead on me yuck.

I LOVE meat! I try to eat mostly game meat or free range meat though. It tastes better and I know that my hunter friend that gives it to us is very humane and it keeps our wildlife pop down. I will wear leather but again I try to wear leather that has been taken from a wild animals or free range than from an animal that was kept in a small area all there lives for that purpose.

I eat meat.  I'm an omnivore.  And I have leather things.  I have no fur thing- not because I have any objection to it, just because I think it's ugly.

I don't eat meat, don't wear fur and try to avoid leather. I am having a hard time when it comes to shoes though.[8D]

    DH is a meat eater.

I am having a hard time when it comes to shoes though.

Really? I just looked at my Payless sneakers (I have a reeeeaaaally hard time dropping more than 20 bucks on shoes, even though they usually last me at least a year of wearing them every day...don't ask), and they say "all man-made", and I bought two pairs of dressy formal shoes (I'm a bridesmaid in a couple weeks), and both say "all man-made" as well. That's without even trying.

I'm "almost" a vegetarian (is that possible? I think that might be like "a little bit pregnant"..). I eat meat once, maybe twice a week. It's not even on purpose. I just don't like it very much. The meat I do eat is usually quite processed (think chicken nuggets, pepperoni, lunch meat), and doesn't even resemble meat anymore. Unprocessed meat, say a steak, or chicken breast, has to have lots of flavoring (steak sauce, bbq sauce, etc.) or it tastes..dead. I definitely can't do unprocessed pork. SOO nasty. Bacon, hot dogs, and ham are my friends, but I eat them very very rarely, cause they're so darn bad for you. I do eat cheese, but don't like milk at all. I had to put half & half in my coffee the other day because I was out of soymilk, and I couldn't even drink it, it tasted so bad.

I don't wear fur. Think it's yucky and pointless. Don't have anything leather. I just don't see the point. If I'm looking to buy a car, leather seats are absolutely a deal-breaker. All I can think is how many cows died for that ONE car. Leather furniture is the same. Bleh.

But Cherokee is a carnivore, and eats a carnivore's diet. No leather for her either though. There's just no reason for her to have anything leather. Nylon leashes and harnesses work just as well.

I am a carnivore & couldn#%92t live without meat. I am choosy about what kinds of meat I eat. I want free range, organic meats. The beef we eat comes from our cattle, the chicken comes from the parents house,& the fish comes from a fresh seafood market. We also eat some wild game, deer, rabbit & the BF eats squirrel. (I can#%92t do it, they look to ratty for me) I do own leather shoes, belts & a few leather jackets. On the other hand, I don#%92t wear fur at all, nor do I want to be near it. I literally have nightmares about fur coats coming to life and eating me.

I grew up in a hunting family and have been taught there are only two reasons to kill something: self defense or to use the ENTIRE animal. That being said, I have some leather shoes as well as a leather purse (that is twenty five years old!).

I love veggies and eat them a lot along with fruits.  I eat virtually anything without processed sugar in it  (boy, do I MISS it!)--eggs, fish, chicken, cheese, grains, veggies, etc.

Nearly all of the beef I buy comes from a friend who raises organic, pampered cattle.  His meat is excellent and the price is great.  How can I go wrong? I buy eggs that come from our local dairy that are vegetarian fed.

I don't mind others being vegetarian (of any sort).  What I DO mind is the sanctimonious, look-down-their-nose type of ANY person who believes that his/her way of eating is the only way.  You all know the sort: "Ewwww...are you REALLY going to eat THAT?  Do you know what  that is?/how that was raised?/causes cancer?" Yep, I know how is was raised, etc. and frankly, it's none of anyone's business but MINE what I put into my body. I have had people make fun of me because I can no longer eat sugar, for God's sake!
