Ugly Dog

OK, and you're telling me the first time you saw a hairless chihuahua or a Chinese Crested that you didn't think it was ugly? At least from a distance?

No way! I LOVE hairless dogs, and think that they're gorgeous. The first time I met a Chinese Crested, I squealed and drooled all over her. She loved it.

I haven't met a truly hairless Chihuahua. I've met some pretty thin haired ones. The Mexican Hairless isn't a Chi.... It's a Xoloitzcuintle. Say that three times fast;)

I do know a few dogs that would be considered ugly, but with a better haircut and proper care, they wouldn't look bad.

I love Chinese Crested dogs! Well bred they look like little ponies [:)]

There is a member that has a chinese crested but doesnt post much, and that dog is GORGEOUS absolutely beatiful. But that dog up there is the spitting image of a demon dog...lol

I personally know an actual UGLY dog, not just a breed that some people might feel is ugly.

A couple weeks ago in People Magazine (the one that showed pictures of Nicole Kidmans wedding) there are all the finalist of the World's Ugliest Dog contest that just took place in SF area.

The greyhound rescue I work with owns the 2nd place winner. Her name is Victoria and she is a Italian Greyhound that is physically deformed since birth due to hydrocephalus, has an amputated tail, is blind in the right eye, has seizures, a deformed face, an arched back, a healed broken leg that makes her walk in a goofy way.

She actually has 1 perfect looking side of her face and the other is not. She really is an Ugly dog, NOT JUST AN UGLY BREED. All the other dogs in the contest really were just breeds that some folks feel is Ugly.  She gets horrible looks by people when she is out and her owner is constntly asked questions like "how can you own that thing?".

She is an AMAZING dog who was going to be put down by her breeder as a little pup becasue of her disability and she was saved by the greyhound rescue. Victoria is a great role model for dogs with disabilities and for the greyhound rescue. When I first saw her I did feel that she was ugly, but once you get to know her you see past all of it to her beauty!

Here is her story if anyone wants to see her!

Yes, you're right, I do actually think Chinese Cresteds are pretty dogs... but the first one I ever saw was dirty, poorly cared for, and old and it looked scary.  My friend has one now and it's quite an adorable little thing!

Mexican hairless might have been the other ugly dog I saw, although all the pics I pull up on the web are actually pretty cute dogs.  [:D] So, I stand corrected on both breeds.

However, I maintain that dog pictured above is ugly!  (I can't link to the first site because my company blocked it- maybe it's the same dog, I don't know.)

Was able to find a slide show of Victoria (the 2nd place winner in last months "World's ugliest dog contest)

The last picture in the slide show clearly shows her "normal side of her face" and her "deformed side" (see my previous post about her story and her deformities)

I've seen ugly dogs.  I've seen ugly cats.   I've seen ugly babies.  I've seen ugly people.  (I'm no supermodel myself).  lol

But I would NEVER say it anywhere near the actual dog or owner - that's just wrong.

As for the physically deformed dogs, thats not fair to call them ugly... its kind like calling a retarded or special needs or deformed person ugly... but in general some people can think certain breeds or types are "ugly", as in not their preference I suppose.

Im so glad that greyhound got a good life with a loving owner.[:)][:)]

    Amy, I agree.
I work with people with disabilities and would be furious at someone calling them ugly.Victoria's owners and the rest of the volunteers at the rescue don't think she is ugly, but people in public make comments all the time about her being ugly and questioning why they would even keep her.

Based on the publics view of her they entered her into the contest not because they believe she is ugly, but in hopes of raising awareness to not destroy dogs just because they are disabled and also in hopes of raising more awareness about greyhound rescue.

I agree, she is very lucky to have a wonderful home with people who love her so much! [:)]

Everyone has their breed preferences. I think certain breeds are not so attractive but I am sure there are people who think Dalmatians are ugly or GSDs are ugly.

I would NEVER tell someone that their animal was ugly to their face. I have seen my share of ugly dogs and I always try to find something positive, like they have pretty eyes or a nice coat, exc.

Now, when they walk away, all bets are off *l*.

People like different breeds. All of the breeds I think are "ugly" are owned by people who love the breed and think they are beautiful. I doubt many people pick a dog because they think it is ugly, people usually pick animals because they think they are cute. It is "all in the eye of the beholder".

I actually think that greyhound's kinda cute lol I'd adopt him.

Yes, there are truly ugly dogs out there. Not many of them mind you.. but you can probably find most of them at [linkhttp://www.sonoma-marinfair.org/uglydogvote.shtml]The World's Ugliest Dog Competition[/link].

Ok those dogs are just horrible. How could you in your right mind ever think those dogs are cute.  The one person on there wrote that she thought the dog reminded her of her previous "worlds ugliest dog" COME ON??? Those things are rotten. If I ever saw one in the pet store, animal shelter, I would RUN.

But I'm not just saying that those nasty dogs are ugly. I mean even certain breeds. Have you ever found a certain breed to be ugly, besides those monsters?

Lily and I have been on the receiving end of a ugly dog comment.  When we lived in Chicago, I was walking her, two men who were walking rudely and loudly said,"Ew...what kind of dog it that?"  Now, Miss Puss is beautiful and I was very hurt.  Apparently, they must not be from the Chicago area because I swear there is one male shepard living in the city knocking up various other female  mutts because she is truely what you would call the "Chicago Shephard."  If you go to any dog park there, you will see so many shephards that look alike, that many people just call their mutts, the "Chicago Shepard"

I've seen ugly dogs and told the owners. I speak my mind I don't care, yes I know everyone has their own opinions and I share mine. I told my Aunty that her dog was ugly, she didn't like it but it was so true. My uncle laughed but had to agree with me, we had no idea what breeds it was, as it was dumped but it was the ugliest dog I have ever seen.
