The differences in being a kid and being an adult

I thought it might be potentially fun to poke some fun at our "grown" selves!

Here's mine, today was "PAJAMA DAY' at Lily's school for the Kindergarten class. Other classes do this periodically.

My daughter was STOKED....to say the least. We went out and bought her some warm flannel Spongebob PJ's and she wore them today. I mean...I have seldom seen her so excited...it was adorable. Get to school and almost ALL the K's are wearing their PJ's and smiling ear to ear.

DH and I were discussing PJ Day last night in the car and remarking how sad and funny it was because...at his job BofA...banker central...he and I agreed there'd be NOTHING but complaining if someone even suggested PJ day. The memo would come out...and then the the excuses and complaints would come forth:

'I don't have time to buy pajamas esp for work...nothing I own is suitable for work'
    'I sleep in the nude'
'I think this is sexual harrassment'
'It's against my religious beliefs to be seen in my pj's'
    'It's too cold'
    'It makes me uncomfortable'

LMAO...what was meant to be fun and release some of the uptightness would only create more. When does this happen to us as adults? The simple things and the different cease to inspire glee and instead bring with them a sense of dread...lol!

Just a rambling post but it is meant in fun...so if you have something amusing to add about "now" vs "then"....please do!

did the teachers were pj's too? never had a pj day while i was in school it seems kinda odd. and trust me no one i work with wants to see me in my pj's! [:)]

i think the transition from carefree kid to uptight adult happened sometime in january of 97, when i realized my school days were over (graduated in dec of 96).  it was unfortunate as things had been funfilled up to that point.

When I was in school, right up thru HS, we ALWAYS had a Spirit Week...one day would be say "Silly Hat Day" the next "Pajama Day"...the next..."Backwards Day"....etc etc. It was a lot of fun!

That's so cute how your daughter was tickled to have PJ Day at school!  [:D]  Since the kids get so excited, maybe they should have that day once a month.  I'd love PJ Day at work!! LOL  I can only imagine the remarks our boss (and some snooty customers) would make!!

When I first got this job (insurance agency) he was all about dressing up, wearing 'church' clothes every day.  A trend was shown on the news about businesses allowing "dress down days" on Friday.... before he knew it, we were showing up in jeans & sweatshirts or tshirts on Fridays.  He calls it 'car wash day' lol  We usually sneak in a car wash day when he has meetings too LOL  I also run around most of the time in the office without my shoes (I'm more productive that way -- haha).  Once we get comfy, seems like more work is done.

It's amusing how people make such an enormous deal out of the most simple ideas.  It's a reaction we see every day - instead of taking advantage, they'd come up with ways of rejecting PJ Day.... I'd be ALL FOR IT!  I think the rest of the girls in the office would be all for it too.

Why are people so quick to complain (or threaten a lawsuit) these days over silly things?

I always thought pajama day was great. In elementary school it meant an excuse to buy new ones. In middle school and high school, it meant I didn't have to get dressed in the morning, so I could get a few extra minutes of sleep, and sleep is absolutely one of my favorite things. I hope the school I student teach in has pajama day, and I hope even more so that the school I get a job in has pajama day, or I will be seriously disappointed. If it doesn't, i'll be urging the kids to beg for it.

Oh yeah!  I also work in the Financial Industry Gina and know how uptight it is all too well...

I guess just in terms of "then" vs. "now" (unrelated to work) I miss that simple joy of playing games.  You know, at recess time, playing dodgeball (or whatever you liked)?   SO MUCH fun!!!!!   that exhilaration would stay with me all day.  I can't remember the last time I felt that or had that much fun.

I also miss the "high" of discovering what my passions/talents are.  Not to say that I don't have any new ones left in me - but that surprise of realizing that you're actually really good at something.. not so much anymore!

Yes games..my DH has gone to those teambuilding things where they manage to even make playing games uptight! lol!

It must be a banker thing??

We have a board game night here every Friday....my 19y/o sis and her HS buds, and my Mom come over...we have chips n dip and we play Scattergories or Pictionary or something. All the kids are respectful and nice and it's a lot of fun...it helps me not be such a poopy pants grown up at least once a week haha!

I think when we get older we just start obsessing about  not doing anything that *might* make us look *silly* - and we wind up missing out on a lot of fun.

YES!!! SAME HERE!  I always had so much fun during Homecoming Week (aka spirit week) w/PJ day, backwards day, even the days that girls dressed like guys & the guys looked like drag queens LOL

Aww, I miss the games in school... Red Rover Red Rover send Gina right over LOL  Board games or even card games in our house are heated! Hubby and I are so competitive that we are no longer allowed to be on other teams [:D].

ohhh, spongebob jammies, i bet she was just too cute.

adults are just far too critical. the other day i opened the margerine container to find [:o] toast crumbs. as i was about to pester dh about it, i had this vision, it was my mom complaining about everything my step-dad does. instead of making even a small deal out of nothing, i laughed at the crumbs and walked away. it felt sooo good to just not care about something so piddley. i do not want to turn into the uptight worry warts that my parents are.

Big difference between being a kid and an adult is naps, kids don't want 'em, adults do but rarely get them! I tell my daughter that's how she'll know when she's grown up, when she WANTS to go to sleep!

We celebrated Spirit Week in high school, too.  One of my favorite photos is of me and my friend on "Punk Rock Day" (yes, I went to high school in the early 80's).  We made complete outfits out of black garbage bags, and used 45 RPM records to encircle our ponytails, glitter eye shadow, etc.  I remember spending HOURS getting that outfit ready the night before!

When I worked in a large accounting office, someone requested "Dress Down Fridays."  What could've been a way to boost morale turned into a mess, thanks to all the rules and guidelines that had to change each week as people started complaining that some staff dressed down in cackies, while others wore jeans with holes in them, etc.  They ended up eliminating it altogether to stop all the whining.

Two things that made me realize I was no longer a child:  One was when I knew that I no longer fit the demographic for the dosage instructions on cold medicines.  The other was when I was living on my own and stayed home from work with a bad cold, yet I went to a concert that same night.  The next day at work, I told one of my co-workers (who was my parents' age) about the concert.  She said, "If you were too sick to go to work, then you were too sick to go to a concert."  I said, "That's what's cool about being an adult -- you can do exactly what your mother would NOT have let you done as a kid!"

We still have some fun where I work - yesterday we had "eat around" day.  Everyone brings food and we don't do anything but eat all day long and cruise around the place talking to everyone that we rarely see when we all have a lot to do.  It's a tradition, and separate from our holiday party (which we have in January so that the winter doesn't seem as long).

i still get to partake in such events....at my school we have "dress up" days all the time. we recently did a pj day too in honor of the polar express and i took my kids for a ride on a train all in pj's and we had hot chocolate

    what a great job!

I wish we had a PJ day at my hospital...I would totally join the festivities...and how comfy would you be in your cozy PJs and slippers![:D]

Since I work in the schools as well, I have been a guest presenter on many a PJ day and the kids (even high school) all love it!  The teachers really get into it too![;)]
