Voting is compulsory here and I like it that way. I like it that way because I think Australians are more politically savvy because they have to vote. I know I wouldn't pay much attention if I didn't know I would have to vote one way or another at some stage. As long as I have to, I figure I may as well make my vote count and pay attention to the different parties and their policies.

A lot of people are very unhappy with our current Prime Minister, but sadly, a lot of us voted for him because we weren't convinced the opposition was strong and competent enough to handle the position. We expect our leader to be smart and decisive first and foremost. The thing I found most astounding about Bush getting into office was the fact that he's obviously not a very bright man. I'm young and inexperienced, but I can't imagine our country ever voting in someone who wasn't very smart. Does anyone want to correct my observations? I'd love to know if I'm way off mark on this one.

i have watched this thread with interest..

all i can say is that i feel safer going to bed at night knowing we are actually going after the human scum who blow up inocent people in the name of thier God.

With the democrats in power, they are left to build up thier rescources and plan for the day of thier next big attack.

I dont trust any party, republican or democrat..but do sleep better knowing that we are taking an active role in taking down the terrorist threat..

I also have family in the military, and hate the thought of losing any one of them, but we all stand behind the mission they are carried out to do..

As for the intellegence of a man...who is to really say how intelligent Bush is...Do any of us know him personally..Are you judging him on appearance or how he speaks? How well do you all speak in public situations..You also have to remember the media has a hell of alot to do as to how a person looks to the rest of us...

To me,Clinton looked like an idiot, and his moral character left a bit to be desired.

And Kerry looked oh so intelligent..I especially liked the scenes with him with a hunting rifle in his hands goin out a huntin..lol

Like i said before tho,i dont trust any of them when they get this far along in the rat race.

I feel less safe with Bush and the Republicans in charge.  Why?  They've spread hate across the globe at a rapid pace.  It's much easier to recruit terrorists now, which is a fact that has been proven.  Oh, sure, blame the Democrats and call them wimpy pansies.

What is ONE good accomplishment of the Iraq war, or, as Bush likes to blanket it, the "War on Terror"?  We're wasting billions of dollars over there, when our own country is in need of help.  I see families struggling to pay for health insurance, schools wondering how they'll fund the after school program they need, college students wishing they could receive financial aid, and other daily struggles the hardworking citizens of this country face.

I'd rather have Kerry in office.  I'm sure the majority of Americans would agree, considering Bush's job approval (or lack thereof) has taken quite the plunge.  At least the new jobs wouldn't be the minimum wage burger flipping jobs Bush has been so proud of "creating".  I'm proud to be a liberal Democrat.  Always have been, always will be.

Good points, Roxie.  I believe we are actually much less safe now than we were five years ago.

The problem is that the extremeists hate us anyway,no matter who is in power..

the way we live is an afront to thier religion, and they want to bring us down no matter what...

i dont care who is in power,if the United States is successfull, then there will be those who hate us,and will do what they can to bring us down.

More could definitely be done to help our own people in the states, but i really believe the liberal agenda coddles people too much...i believe nothing is owed us,and have worked for everything i have, and  i think there is no reason why this shouldnt be the case for every other able bodied person.

of course this is all comming from a Ross Perot supporter...I havnt been impressed with any presidential candidate since him.

True, they've not been pleased with us in the past, but their hatred has risen since Bush's term as president.  (He's not my president, because I never voted for him.)

There are certain parts of the Democrat platform with which I disagree.  I think people should be helped when they've hit rock bottom.  We should not look down on them; we should help them get back on their feet.  After that, they should be able to go on and do better.  Unfortunately, the system has been abused, with entire generations being raised on government assistance.

I also work for what I have.  My parents made it clear to me at a young age that a responsible and respectable person will work for what they have, no matter how hard things get.  I believe that 100%, but we also recognize the need others have.  It's a tough balance, really.

More people hate America now than ever, or should I say A-merca.   Why would that make me feel safe?  And the war doesnt make me feel safe.  He went to war with Iraq, which is NOT who did the 911 attack.  It was his intention all along to finish what his dad started.

Hey, Im not good in front of people, but nor am I the freaking president of the United States, so what.  If Bush turns into a bumbling idiot in front of a crowd, Id say hes in the wrong line of work.  They do offer classes on public speaking at his local college.[;)]

And so what if Kerry went hunting, at least he didnt shoot his friend in the face and lie about it. [8D]

yes i must say i also feel much safer knowing this iraqi baby will not be spilling its milk on me, i am also very glad that poor soldier gets to remember that moment for the rest of his life, and see it in his many nightmares. if he makes it home that is. it is so much more righteous of us to blow up innocent people in the name of...the name of...whats this war about again? the reason has changed so many times i don't really know anymore. but thank god this baby isn't coming after me [:o]

i agree that bush jr was finishing daddy's work, it seems everyone has forgotten desert storm.

i can't exactly say what is wrong with bush, but i do know an intelligent person does not metaphorically jump up and down screaming "pick me pick me!" when a crazy mofo like kim jong-il goes looking for someone to use his newly developed nuclear weapons on.
    • Gold Top Dog
here again,we have people like north koreas leader comming into power and building up a nuclear program, and whether you like it or not,no matter who is in charge,at some point they are going to use their weapons against us.

it is only because we stood up and said we are not going to let you blow up our embasies, blow up our ships at port, take our citizens hostage, and bring down our buildings killing thousands of civilians that they are becomming more agressive toward us.

do you think our enemies shed a single tear for any of the orphaned kids of 9-11,or any of the people who died?Innocents get killed, even when you "play fair"in war...that is where our hands are tied..We play by the rules of war.they dont...the picture of the baby says it all...we have a conscience, those who attack us dont.

i have said all i will say...you will never lead me to believe that this administration has gone  out of its way to kill innocent people,or put our own troops in harms way without a good cause.

problem with the first iraq war is that we didnt finish the job.look how that country handled its own minority population before we got involved..so much for human rights.

and i think you missed my point about kerry going hunting...for a group of people who are pushing for strict gun control laws(not entirely a bad thing)and a certain portion of these people calling for an outright ban on gun ownership,i found it pretty hypocritical to pander to the gun crowd.and he probably couldnt have shot anyone with out asking how to take the safety off.[:)]

i think you are missing the point that iraq did not attack us, they had nothing to do with 9/11. a cult-like religious faction known as al-qaeda out of pakistan are your so-called "enemies". they do not represent the entire middle-east. to help you better understand i will pose an example.

a group of mormons out of utah decide that all californians are the devil and should be executed, so they attack california. would it be deemed appropriate for california to start attacking mormons that live in say rhode island, and had nothing to do with the california attack, just because they are mormon? furthermore would it be ok for california to attack the entire state of utah, and wyoming and nevada and colorado just because they are close by utah and they pretty much look the same?

    OF COURSE NOT.

so tell me again what the citizens of iraq did to deserve our attack on them? surely you can say well they are fighting us, all those soldiers are dying. which i cant argue, of course they are fighting us, we invaded their country under false pretense.
    • Gold Top Dog
we originally attacked iraq because it invaded kuwait, but also i believe because of its nuclear ambitions, even back then...sanctions were not working..would you feel safer knowing iraq and iran have nukes ?The world agreed that iraq  shouldnt have a nuclear program,as it does now with north korea.polititians from all countries can talk all they want, but without action to back up the words it is pointless.

They didnt posses nuclear weapons, but isnt it safer to be proactive rather than reactive? The thought of iraq making the leap from a nuclear program to making nuclear weapons is scary considering its past history of the last 40 years.

and as far as i know,we are not attacking iraqs citizens,we are attacking first thier military, and later the insurgency

it is the terrorists who attack non military people on purpose.again,it is my belief that we dont attack innocents on purpose.

Saddam Hussien(a true picture of dictatorship)was very experienced at tourture and killing of his own citizens...i wonder how he woulds act if he had nukes..

this brings us around to the tired old debate of WMd's..

My personal belief is that iraq did indeed have them, and they were scattered throughout the region before war started...Iran and more probably Syria has the majority..And for those who say Iraq never possesed them, you only need to look back in iraqs history to see how chemical and bio weapons were used against its own citizens.Look at the pictures of old women and babies laying dead on the ground after having died a horrible death due to chemical weapons.

this is a different kind of war...the warriors of terror do not live or operate inside borders. There are terror organizations of all types operating throughout the world, all with different agendas, but the Islamic Gihad comes from the middle east,as long as i have been alive, these government sponsered groups have railed against America, burning our flag and chanting Down with America,Death to America..they havnt been saying all this for nothing. They mean it people.

I agree with your right to argue and debate, but i cant agree with you philosophy regarding the events of the past and the course our country will take in the future..

It was explained to us how he won with a cute little animation of someone trying to vote for Kerry electronically, and the button running away from his mouse pointer and eventually the Kerry button turned into a Bush button just when the guy was madly clicking on it trying to make it work.

Cute spin on how Bush stole the election.  Actually it was the good people of Ohio that gave Bush 4 more years.

Not this good person of Ohio.  I was a young registered Democrat, voting in the same exact place I've voted all my life, with the same name, everything...and I was told I had to cast a provisional ballot.  Cute.  There's a great hundred page congressional report on the crazy, crazy voting irregularities in Ohio that year.  What with the Secretary of State guaranteeing the president that he "would deliver Ohio"...and when I get to the ballot box in a few weeks, that fool is going.  Sooo many people had trouble voting.  Especially my young Democratic friends.

I personally think that Bush should be tried in the Hague for genocide and crimes against humanity.  I bet that opinion will make me popular!  [:D]
