Why can't people spell!?

    Why can't people spell!?

I'm sorry, but this is something that drives me absolutely batty!  Are people so lazy these days they can't even type out the three freaking letter word of "you"?  They insist on using 'u' and '4' and all that other crap.

And don't get me started on general punctuation. I is a proper noun!  Geez, why is it so hard to type out words like you and for!?

I know this likely seems silly and asinine, but when people use chatspeak, I feel like I'm talking to a four (OMG I spelled it!) year old!

I notice I make a lot of stupid mistakes. I with do have like ahve, of akme for make. Or I will do  There when it should be their. I think because I try and rush and get what I want to say out so fast because I don't have much time. I'm in too much of a hurry. I do not like the examples you gave, that drives me nutts. I didn't even like the whole "LOL, LMAO, TTYL, G2G" garbage either. My younger sister and i talk on the compter most of the time and I pick up these things from her.
    • Gold Top Dog
See, things like lol and what not are perfectly acceptable to me, but using letters and numbers in place of actual WORDS drives me nuts.

And people that don't know how to punctuate correctly, or use commas, and put weird spaces in things.  I don't even want to read the threads of those people.  And there is a spell check on this forum!  Why isn't it used?!
    • Gold Top Dog
I can't use the spell check on the forum. It does not work for me. I am also no good at adding the comma when needed. I will if I'm writting a book, but here I am just plain old lazy.

I also only got a B in English, so that could be why.
    • Gold Top Dog
Well, I got A's and A+'s all through high school and college in English, so I don't have any excuse.  My spelling is awful and I often put (sp) behind something I'm not sure of.  When I was writing professionally my editor used to threaten to buy me a dictionary.  But, if I can't spell it, how the heck am I gonna look it up????

I think that because the spell check is an extra step, I often forget to use it.

But I absolutely agree with stuff like u, 4, gr8......I'm too old to decipher all that stuff!

The "4s" and the "Us" show an immaturity to me. I don't take too seriously someone who uses that type of abbreviated wording.

My punctuation sucks. I'll be the first to admit that. Screw the laws of grammar, I say! The semi-colon better watch its back! I'm out to get it erased from use in writing!

I usually don't mind people's spelling as long as I can get the gist of what they're trying to say. Punctuation, unfortunately, plays a big part in me being able to understand what someone is trying to say on the internet.
Since we're bitching about spelling and e-speak, can I interject with a moan about font color?? Eye gouging font color should NOT be legal. Er...sorry, should I just start my own thread?[:D]

I know I put way to many elipses (sp?) in my posts and I'm working on it! It's just such a habit for me.

When I was 14, I used to use the 'chat room' speak. One day, I decided it was pretty lazy and made me look illiterate. I stopped using it and now, like you, it drives me nuts!

I will be the first to admit that I did poorly in English class. I also don't feel that I need to make my English on boards perfect (I write as if I'm speaking). So, I guess what I'm trying to say it, I work on my English... but I'm a Science Major for cricket's sake! [:D]

What a lot of us see as misspellings could be just plain old typographical errors.  That's a whole different category. [:D]

Ok, I think my IQ just dropped 10 points writing that. I don't always spell correctly, my spelling is atrocious but chatspeak is really annoying. We used to really make fun of people who used it on neopets. I can barely understand it.

Well a typo here and there, I mean come on, it happens to everybody.  I've looked at some of my older posts and there are errors.  I have this problem lately where I'm thinking about a word and type something that is COMPLETELY off the mark from what I was trying to type!  I don't know how or why it's been happening (in fact, I'm thinking about seeing the Doctor about it), but it is.   When I catch those errors, I go back and edit.

I'm a bit more forgiving of punctuation and general grammar, but bad spelling.... *fumes*

Thank HEAVEN I'm not the only one!  I thought I was getting senile!

I have to admit this is something that bothers me too! Though I'm far from perfect, I really can't stand using all those abbreviations, and when people put lowercase letters instead of uppercase. I do things like lol, usually in Instant Messenger, but I do like to spell out all of my words. I also think it makes people take what you say more seriously when you don't type so sloppy. [8|]

Okay, Im going out on a limb here... BUT....

I find these threads quite snobby.  I hate them.  Of course I notice that someone made spelling, grammar, typo errors... but to me thats all it is, I notice.

You know what, some people cant spell any better and really dont know they are doing it wrong.  Im glad I know better but Im not gonna sit there and get mad at that... thats just crazy to me.

I know I mess up with spellings and things sometimes and to answer your question, YES, Im just too lazy to fix it.  I come here to relax and chat, not to get a grade on a college paper, and if I dont feel like making each sentence complete and checking over everything and making it perfect I dont have to.  If someone wants to get annoyed with that or judge me for it, thats their problem.

I always got As, I graduated high school a year early and went to college my senior year.  I notice the mistakes but dont always feel like fixing it.  Be a little more forgiving to those people who just dont care AND to those who just dont know.

About the "chatspeak", same thing.  If they want to use it let them, you dont have to.

I suppose I just dont find myself nitpicking all that much.

I also think it makes people take what you say more seriously when you don't type so sloppy

I totally agree.  When things are just obnoxious and hard to read thats another story.  I just think some are being a little to harsh about it.  Thats just me though.

Not asinine at all.  (And I'm glad someone else knows the word and its meaning.)

I worked as an English tutor during my stint as a college student; that job was not good for me.  Why?  Well, I had to correct too many mistakes.  People would purposely request me, thinking I'd rewrite their papers for them (I'd practically restructed a few papers, so word had spread amongst the library).  Ha!  They thought wrong.  Needless to say, I had to quit doing that.  It was so annoying.  I mean, when someone is in a college level English course, they should have a firm grasp of the basics, right?  They were either passed in remedial English or were able to enter it on their own, right?  I guess the fault lies with the professor or teacher by whom they were taught.

Spelling is a mild annoyance with me; I detest the misuage of commas and semicolons.  A semicolon can be used properly, granted one knows the proper way.  A comma is the most abused of all punctuation marks.  Comma splices are a dime a dozen.  I hate the following: "I am going to the dog park, tomorrow.  I was already there, today, and had fun."  Since it should be obviously why those two sentences are revolting, I won't explain why.
