Why can't people spell!?

    • Gold Top Dog
I can't spell and I know it. I've always gotten A's in English and all but when it comes to forums like this I just want to get my point out and really don't care much about what my gramer looks like. Once in a while I use spell check but I find it kinda pointless for something like this. I also make many typos but as long as I can get my point accross I really don't care much to go back and change it.

I really don't like the chat talk like Y, U and quick talk but I get use to it. I'm somewhat of a fast typer so it takes me just as much time to spell out the whole word as to use thoes. If I was a slower typer I might just use thoes.

I am so glad I am not the only one who is driven crazy by this!  The improper use of it's vs. its, the wrong there or to or any number of other things  makes me crazy.  I don't type particularly accurately, so I always go back and check for errors before I post.  Every now and then I will miss something.  However, commas and semicolons can NOT be fixed by spell check! There are a few simple rules to learn. If you graduated from high school, you should know and use them!

I edited manuscripts for a living and lost count of the lousy grammar and spelling I encountered each and every day.  These manuscripts were written by people who often had Phd. degrees, for God's sake!

Can you tell this is a pet peeve of mine?[8|]

I never use an apostrophy on here for its, thats and so on.  Why, because I dont feel like it.

BTW, I notice errors in your posts that are complaining about exactly that.  Just thought Id mention it.

I know yall are just talking about it, but I personally feel like its a little too anal for me.  So, Ill stay out of it from now on since Im the only one who seems to think this way.  I did want to say, however, that some of us know better and just dont find it that important to be exaclty correct in THIS particular setting.

I have this problem lately where I'm thinking about a word and type something that is COMPLETELY off the mark from what I was trying to type!

Thank HEAVEN I'm not the only one! I thought I was getting senile

Spelling is a mild annoyance with me; I detest the misuage of commas and semicolons. A semicolon can be used properly, granted one knows the proper way. A comma is the most abused of all punctuation marks. Comma splices are a dime a dozen. I hate the following: "I am going to the dog park, tomorrow. I was already there, today, and had fun." Since it should be obviously why those two sentences are revolting, I won't explain why.

    GAH!
You'd hate me then! I have not worked on grammar and punctuation since fourth grade. That is, until last year. That is just how it works where I'm from. They teach you the basics and then forget about you. I tested right into English I (missed English II by 3 points) and was expected to know ALL of the grammatical terminology, recognize writing errors, and understand the usage of ALL punctuation. I'm a comma splicer, I'm sure. My modifiers dangle. I forget when and where to use a semicolon (I usually just opt not to use them). I think the most common comma errors come from the fact that people want to add them where there is a break or pause in speech. But don't ask me. I'd add commas after EVERYTHING if I thought I could get away with it (hey! I breathe a LOT when I speak).
One of my really good friends got her master's in poetry. She got her bachelor's in English. She would proof read and correct punctuation on all of my essays. I swear she is the only reason I got good grades on my essays.
Honestly, schools should do about 2-3 weeks of grammar review at the beginning of every year.

typos are annoying but not a big deal.  run on sentences, oiy!  I can not stand to read posts that do not have periods in betweeen sentences.  It's hard to read and basically I just skip those and move on.  We all miss stuff  here and there, but if a post is full of crap, bad grammer, wrong words used based on spelling, no punctuation to show ends of sentences... bleh!  Proper punctuation and spelling really help other people to read your posts and undertstand them without having to reread.  Chances are, if there are too many problems your post might get skipped by some, so it's in your best interests to use some punctuation.  ooh, or returns.  Break up long posts please!!!!

"I find these threads quite snobby.  I hate them.  Of course when you notice that someone made spelling, grammar, typo errors... but to me thats all it is, I notice."

    loveyoukay...I completely agree. [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

Something that annoys me is when people go out of their way to Capitalize Every First Letter Of Every Word Of Their Post Instead Of Just The First Word... like that... It's very hard to read... where the heck do people learn that?? >O.o< It's easier to just use normal capitalization lol...

I agree with Gina and loveyoukay.  I may notice errors, but don't really care.  I had a boss that had to edit everything I did, from a simple email to a proposal to a report.  No matter what I wrote (five words or 50 pages), there was always something that she had to change...no matter what.    It drove me crazy!!!!!!

I also cannot use the spell check, that option is out.

When it comes to chat speak, I just don't understand it.  Maybe this is because I was never big into text messaging on my phone, where I believe this comes from.

Part of what I do for a living is writing, editing and proofreading.  I don't come here to work, and no one is paying me to correct someone else's spelling. It's nice not to concentrate on writing English perfectly MYSELF, let alone correcting anyone else.  The occasional absolutely unreadable post gets up my nose, but anything else I just ignore.  Not for me to judge someone else who a) might not speak English as a native language b) might be feeling lazy/tired/hungover/overworked or just preoccupied with real life.

In my professional life, it annoys the heck out of me and I am the FIRST to complain about general literacy going down the tubes.  But in my field the professionals really ought to know better.  Here is where people come to relax and NOT have to be perfect all the time, because there are no consequences for forgetting an apostrophe here.  Well, now there are, I guess.

ETA: I do agree about DELIBERATE mispellings.  There's no excuse for that.

As far as I'm concerned this is just a dog forum, not a literary or Mensa forum. As long as I can understand what the poster is trying to communicate I really don't care if something is spelled incorrectly or commas are missing. If I'm reading an essay, article or a business correspondence that's a different story. I actually get more annoyed with posters who tend to use language that is overly 'high brow'. It makes me wonder just who they are trying to impress.

I notice misspellings.  I notice the wrong form of a word used  (their, there) and just keep reading, but the one thing that really annoys me is the shorthand or internet slang.  SOME of us are old farts....not ALL of us were born with a mouse in hand like the younger folks.  It takes me 4evr to figure out what some of that stuff means and sometimes I just flat don't bother!

I agree the short term words are childish. But I find it soooooooo annoying when people correct others spelling mistakes. I think that is more annoying than the spelling itself. I do not notice others spelling mistakes unless you read a post where every word is spelt wrong. I mean come on you could read this:

I wlak my dog evrey day. Soemtmes we sotp  for a hamubger. He lkies to play ftech.

I think it's very anal as well.

Someone brought up one of Joel's old posts the other day, wherein he said something to the effect of, "If you are going to start a thread called 'Stupid People,' it would be prudent to spell both words correctly."

Sometimes, pointing out spelling errors can be quite funny.  [:D]
