They are now reporting at least 27 fatalities with 18 of them children.  Most of the children were in the same Kindergarten class.  They think a parent did it, but the story changes every two minutes.

Who could look a 5yr old in the face and shoot them?  Unfathomable.  I just learned my friend works in Newtown, but she and her family are all ok.

I can't imagine that this shooter or any of the shooters look at anyone in the eye. They just shoot randomly. I cannot imagine this world we live in where so many Americans (and we are BY FAR the leader in this category) go on these shooting sprees in which the goal is to randomly kill (and yes sometimes there is a stated target but causing mass damage is the goal).  Something is horribly wrong and it is about time the American people stopped all the whining, bitching, and infighting and started to make this country a better place.

sorry if I offend - as overwhelmed as the rest of you

I turned the news off a little while ago, but I've seen a bit from postings on Facebook. What the hell has to be wrong with you to hurt babies. What the hell could a 5 year old have done to anyone.

    • Gold Top Dog

There has to be a special place in hell for a man who dons a bullet-proof vest and kills babies with an assault rifle.  They are also reporting now that this loser traveled from NJ to CT and the State Police in NJ are searching several locations for evidence and a motive.

No offense taken here, Karen.  After the shooting at the mall here earlier this week, we started to hear all the discussions about gun control.  I understand people wanting the right to own a gun for hunting or basic self-defense in the home, etc..  But do "regular citizens" need access to guns that can spray dozens of rounds in the matter of a few seconds, covering wide areas of people?  Aren't those kinds of weapons only necessary for law enforcement or military personnel in war zones?  I heard a local news report this morning on a politician here wanting to introduce a bill to outlaw magazines that have more than a certain number of rounds in them.  The commentator said she should expect a tough time passing something like that.

Yeah, there's probably no "looking in the eye."  That would be too personal (and would only require a hand-gun).  It's just an inhuman desire to inflict wide damage with no regard for who's hit.

I'm trying to follow the updates online, but I'll have to wait to see TV reports when I get home.  It's making me sick just thinking about it.

apparently his parents were found dead in NJ

This sort of craziness is mind boggling.  Seems the more attention the shooters get the more they like it and what would get more attention than shooting children.  My heart breaks for the families and first responders.

Heartbreaking and incomprehensible is all I can say Crying

The shooting is beyond heart breaking.

Off that topic, today, for work, I drove nearly 200 miles visiting several clients.  Got 2 supervisory visits done and gave out 4 Holiday Stockings for our clients.  They were filled with homemade treats, holiday CD, cards made by various local Elementary schools and a card from our office.  The clients I went to today loved the gifts and it warmed my heart to see them smile.  It was well worth all the driving around!  Plus I got many compliments on my oatmeal cookies lol.  That makes the insane amount of baking I did this past Sunday totally worthwhile =)

Cathy, what a great picture of Shane.

Gin, so very glad to hear you're doing is improving.

Why are assault weapons available to the general public?  I'm sick about this.  I've been on the road all day, but walked into a clients and he had some of the big screen TV's on.  Luckily he's a good guy or I would have been very embarrased when "sweet mother of god" came out of my mouth.

Prayers for those babies, and their parents.

That would make sense to me, because during the very limited press briefing around 1:30pm today, they said something about "in and out of state" when talking about gathering search warrants as necessary.

Sounds like they misidentified which brother it was, too.

I am horrified to think what those little children who witnessed this will go through - what their parents and teachers will go through in trying to help them cope.  How will they help them feel safe at home or in school again?  What the teachers/staff and first responders will go through after seeing these children and adults first hand.  There are no words for them, or the parents and loved ones of those killed.  I have hugged some coworkers who are just overcome in grieving sympathy.  No words, just hugs.  So so so terrible.

Ugh--the news just keeps getting worse. I was trying to help my students (who are in the schools for the pre-student teaching semester) and we all had a hard time even beginning to understand. 20 children...and the mother of the shooter who was a kindergarten teacher (at the same school, I think). God bless all the families--I can't imagine their pain.

Regarding the mass killing-I am appalled of course. I was watching this morning, until it reached a point where I couldn't stand it. I have guns, none that qualify as an assault rifle. I object to blaming the gun because 1) the assault rifle apparently never left his car, and 2) this was done by a human, not a machine. Blaming the tool removes responsibility from the person. Our society is violent not because guns are present, but because we have a society with violent people in it. Blame the person. There was just a case of multiple murder in Denver where the weapon was a Hudson sprayer filled with gasoline. A garden tool. 4 dead. Canada actually has about as many guns per capita as the U.S. Different society, different attitude towards violence. We need a better way of identifying and dealing with violent people.
