Just another manic Monday chat

Winter has arrived. Temp is 0ºF. Landscape has turned white. Snowplows running on streets and highways. School closings and 2 hour late warnings on the TV. Wife gloating because she is retired and doesn't have to drive 15 miles of icy roads to get to work. No work for me today-yet. I guess I'll make another pot of coffee and think about starting the snow blower. The sun is out so we have blue sky for the first time in 3 or 4 days. Birds are hitting the feeders and water pretty hard-mostly Grackles and Sparrows, but some pretty ones also. Uff da!!

Got Pipers nails yesterday. She had hit the wood floor and spun a donut when her backend kept turning. She was actually pretty calm about the procedure. I got her into a small room with the door shut, put the leash on her, and used firm calm language. Usually this takes two or three people to pull off. She is still talking to me, but if you pick up the nail trimmer, she is gone.

Apparently, civilization was created by women. Behind every good man, there is a woman-pushing, goading, cajoling, harassing, occasionally threatening until some project is completed. Something a man didn't realize was important, doesn't want to do, and only does because it's easier to do than avoid doing.

Just for my wifes' welfare, I made the sacrifice and destroyed all the fudge. It was good! Wed night, when she is at choir, I may just make some more.

    Happy Snow Day-Doug

Speaking of recipes, Jackie - didn't you make some kind of lemon cake for Thanksgiving ?

It was a lemon ice box pie.  I got it out of Better Homes and Gardens magazine.  I'll send it to you tomorrow assuming I can find it.  It was really good.  :)

I got Luke's cards, and I'm busy addressing them for him.

So, I was supposed to have something scheduled for this Thursday at 4. Lots of back and forth to get it scheduled, and I didn't take an appointment with my dentist because it conflicted with this thing. I got an email  today from the guy who it was scheduled with, now he can't do that day. That's really too bad, because my free afternoon is Thursday. I'm not canceling someone else for this.  Of course, I think the kid we need to see is going on vacation the next week, and is possibly leaving next Thursday. So, if it's not this Thursday, I think it's not happening till next year.

Niiice!  You could, of course, offer to send some to one of us... Just sayin'! lol

Man, I am not looking forward to the cold you described, though, Doug.  Gah!

I keep losing track of time and never do well at Christmas.  I barely buy for anyone - all my friends just exchange cards if that.  And then it gets to about a week or two before Christmas and I think, "OH, YEAH!  My parents!"  So this year I got my mom covered w/a celtic necklace.  My dad is tougher and I can't ask my mom for help b/c she always says "we don't need anything, don't get us anything!"  But they're into "experiences" these days, so maybe my sister and I can come up w/something.  This is the first year I've had any $ to do anything in a long time.  (Thank you Nana.  I've been missing her a lot all year, but we're coming up on the 1-yr anniversary of her death and it's sad and strange.)

My other sister asked me for more money so she could buy her Christmas gifts online this past weekend. I just gave her money 2 months ago.  She did the same thing 2 years ago to my other sister and still hasn't paid her bac.  So.. uhm, no.  Christmas has been coming all year, it's not like this is a new expense, or something else happened that killed her budget.  She is just a spender in a major way.  Tough love.  I will make sure my nieces and nephews have Christmas gifts, no matter what, but.

AAnyway, that reminds me, I have something to ship out for an idogger that I never got to last year.  I SUCK at Christmas time!!

Tina, sorry about DS but it sounds like it's probably for the best.  I always told mine that just because you were good friends with someone didn't mean that you could actually live with them.  Two totally different things.

Doug, I don't think I'd survive one day of a MN winter.  Weatherbug says it's 50 outside now and my fingers feel numb.  I need to go wrap my hands around a big mug of something hot. All of us left coast kids are real wusses when it comes to weather. Smile

I'm so tired this morning -- and I need to wrap up the dreaded project I've been dealing with at work (along with another deadline I have on the 10th of every month).  DH's niece and her husband arrived very late Friday night, and we chatted until after 1AM.  Lots of visiting, dining, shopping, and dealing with my MIL on Saturday and Sunday, so I didn't get the weekend sleep or quiet that I am used to (and require for sanity).  It's going to be a long week.

Julie & Karen, I hope you're on the mend.  Your illnesses sounded terrible!

Tina, I'm sorry to hear that your son's moving back.  I'm sure he's disappointed, too -- fingers crossed he can find another roommate situation that's more stable.  It's true that living with a good friend can be a disaster.  I've seen it happen more than once.

About turtlenecks ---- I love them, have them in multiple colors, and would wear one everyday if weather allowed.  I like cozy-fitting clothes that keep drafts off my neck and chest.  It's not a very sexy look, but oh well.

Speaking of weather, your post, Doug, made me shiver.  I prefer cold weather to hot weather, and I truly love snow, but I'm certain I'd be complaining about what you're experiencing.  I'd stay in the house and eat more fudge (while wearing a turtleneck, of course)!

Paige, that image of the boy, his cello case, and his dog was so sweet.  I hope the little boy's life is as happy as it appears to be from that vantage point!

Sharon, how maddening about your table.  When we bought our dining set several years ago, the table arrived with a deep crack in it (only visible from underneath, so thank doG we looked it over carefully).  The company did replace the table, but it took a few weeks.  Such a letdown when you're excited to use it right away!

Back to my piles of financial statements!

My dad's birthday was Friday. I got him nothing because I had no clue what to get him. I  just didn't want to buy him something for the sake of buying him something. I guess we'll probably take him for dinner when he comes back from wherever he is.

I can't handle turtlenecks either but I do like my neck warm and wear a lot of warm scarfs during the winter. I wear them loosely though and take them off when they start feeling I'm choking.

Julie - so glad you're feeling better. That's a lousy way to lose weight :(.

There's been news stories running about a beloved teacher who was hit and killed by a train this weekend. She was an avid photographer and was taking a picture of a train coming towards her. She was standing on the tracks beside the oncoming train and because of the noise, didn't realize one was coming behind her and it couldn't stop in time. Turns out DH and his crew were first on the scene and I can tell he's still upset by it :(.

I have chili cooking in the crockpot but since I'm sort of winging it, I have no idea if I've gotten the spices right or how it'll taste. I tend to make stuff too hot for DH, so I tried to be careful but I hope it at least tastes like chili. ETA - paragraph breaks

I can't stand turtlenecks.  I also look ridiculous in them.

My boss has told me I'm never EVER to make and bring in my oatmeal cookies again.  She's been eating them by the handful lol.  I do love the recipe I use (with the only tweak I double the amount of cinnamon it calls for).

I just realized I have most of my cheese calzone from last night leftover in the refrigerator.  This means no cooking tonight, which I didn't feel like doing.  It's the kinda dreary/rainy day in which I want to go home, take care of the animals, change into warm pj's and slipper socks, pour a glass of wine and call it a night.  I just bought a local dry white wine that I've never tried.  I WAS going to open it up on Christmas, but I think I should try it ahead of time just to make sure it's good.  I can always buy another bottle lol.

I know, right?! I'm still having trouble wrapping my head around it. I asked DH if the train that hit her used their horn, but DH said he didn't know. He said the conductor would only point to where she was and was very upset.

DH is eating a 2nd bowl of chili and says it's really good. Yahoo!!

Cathy that is awful - I know my DH still has nightmares from some things he got turned out to :(

I am sooooooooooooo exhausted and still trying to do something that will help me feel further along

Worst of all DH said this morning "I think I have a sore throat" Now we all know he'll be dying from whatever I had so pray he doesn't get sick

my stepson sorted out a huge (for me) Excel project. I hardly ever use it so any time I need to do something past basic spreadsheet I have to look up each step. He saved me oodles of time! Incredible

Hopefully your dh doesn't get sick. We had a meeting cancelled tomorrow for 2 more people down with the flu here. Schools have been shut down too. Seems like an early, hard flu season. My chest/back hurts from all of the puking I did. I can't laugh without groaning which has my dogs confused ;p i could totally go for a hot tub soak but I haven't fired it up yet this year.

I so rarely get sick (pain, allergies, sinus stuff sure but not a cold or such) that I am still kind of in shock and not sure what this is. I didn't have near the amount of puking you did but I have never had dry heaves and puked pure water before, ridiculous and yes all day on Sunday my gut was so sore!! There was an article last week in our paper about flu and flu-light saying it was a virulent and early season

Karen, I hope your DH doesn't get sick too.  Flu is hitting our area too but I feel relatively safe since I got my flu shot in October.

Cathy, the incident with the woman killed by the train is horrific.  A friend of mine is an engineer for UP and he's been involved in a few fatal car/train collisions.  He says it is absolutely devastating to be so helpless to stop the train in time.  I feel so sorry for your DH and the other responders on the scene.  I can't imagine.
