Post election day chat

I'm going to share it too, with your name removed, Deb.  :)  It will be nice to see something on FB that doesn't involve politics. lol

Yay, Deb!  So glad to hear you've got power!  I cannot imagine how you've gotten along for 9 days without it.  Your family (and everyone else in the same situation) are troopers!!  What was the first thing you did with power restored?  I would've taken a long, hot shower!

Your email exchange with the IL power company is very heartwarming.  People are always quick to make complaints and send negative feedback about things, so it's really nice when someone takes the time to express positive remarks and thanks.  Their response was very thoughtfully written -- not some standard reply you'd expect.  Thanks for sharing that with us!

Also, you've got a great employer if you didn't have to use vacation or sick time to continue getting paid.  My employers would never do that in a million years.

Sharon, I hope you feel better!  If only Kate could send some fresh baked apple pie your way, I know it would help.  Kate, I've said before that  Macouns are my favorite apple, but I can't find them here.  I wish I could beam myself to your kitchen to have a slice of pie when it comes out of the oven!

I echo what Paige and Glenda posted about people doing their best to work together on behalf of our country, regardless of party affiliations.  Like the President said in his victory speech, most of us share the same general wishes and hopes for our families and for others.  Fingers crossed they can find ways to solve problems together without gridlock.

I do hope this nor'easter is kind on those in the North...enough is enough!                                                                                                        OMG, my 6 yr granddaughter just said to her mother "I'm going to teach you Math...in Japanese!"   Run, don't walk!

So happy for you that you have your power back on. Feeling so bad for all who have suffered in this storm and for those who are still suffering and will be for some time.

The exchange of emails between you and the power company, brought tears to my eyes, just as it did to others. It is nice to see people exchange positive thoughts like this, instead of the angry and complaining thoughts that some people are just so quick to use.  I too will share these two emails, as you did mention in one post that it was okay with you. I will take your name off as well.

Awesome letter, Deb. These out-of-state crews are pretty amazing.

So far lots of snow up here, but not all that much is sticking. I'm not on the forums much these days, but Deb, if you need ANYTHING, please let me know. I has the emailz even if the power goes out - my office has a giant generator!

Here's hoping the power lines (mostly "fixed," but provisionally so, with dangling lines and propped-up poles all over the place) hold through this storm. Please send good stuff towards the region - thoughts, prayers, vibes, jingles, whatever floats your boat - for NO ICE!!

Sending all of the above, ten-fold!  I was just saying to my coworker that it's just not fair that the region would be hit with another potentially damaging weather system when so many people are still struggling.  Not to minimize what hurricane victims experience in warmer, southern climates, but to add snow, freezing temps, and dangerous ice conditions to what people are already dealing with without power and/or housing is just too much.

My Mom is in CT and had surgery yesterday.  Thankfully, she was already safely home before the snow arrived today.  Her friend is staying with her and got everything ready so they can hole up for a while in the apartment if need be, but my Mom's not feeling up to dealing with a power outage right now.  Be kind, Mother Nature!!

Courtney, it's nice to "see" you!  Give wee Rascal some ear rubs from me.

On my way too work around 3, I was already seeing downed lines on the road. I think I was around Pennington, NJ (I don't know, I was driving by Bristol Myers Squibb, but I was told there are multiple offices). It usually takes me 45-50 minutes to get home, and today it was an hour and 10 minutes. On the radio, it sounded like it was much worse than where I was. I'm supposed to see someone tomorrow for a meeting. She has power, but no phone or internet service at her home or where she works, so it's not really worthwhile.

Trick or treating is tonight here. We took my niece over to a few people. My neighbors have their lights on, and they are sitting in their living room in view of the door. They actually looked at us, but they did not open the door. Umm... if you do not want to open your door, shut your lights off, go watch tv downstairs. She really doesn't care about the candy, we will have plenty of our own left over, we just thought their one kid would like to see her. He's five, and the other day, he came over and asked if she could come out, but she had gone home. We've had no trick or treaters here yet, or if we did, they came while we were out for a few minutes. I highly doubt we'll see any, since near freezing and snowing. We did see a few kids out over by one of my mom's friends houses that we went over to, but that's it.

Jen, not to be arbitrary, but, I think that the generally accepted "rule" is not to go to a house if the porch light is NOT on.  It's been a fairly long time since we lived someplace that we might get trick or treaters, but that always worked for me.  I'll be darned if I'm going to sit in a dark house or hide in the basement to watch TV in my own home.  That said, agreed.  It was very rude to actually LOOK at neighbors and not budge.

Oh man, Glenda, maybe that's why I didn't get many this year! My porch light is out and I don't know how to get the casing off to switch the bulb! I did have a lit Jack-o-lantern out, though...

Snow is coming down hard and heavy here. I really hope Deb is doing okay. My area has power, but there are lots of places around here that still don't, and from what I understand the situation is pretty precarious even in the areas that have been restored.

Rascal, at least, is safe and sound in CT - I left him with the in-laws because of the power situation. They heat with wood, so even if the power goes out there, he will be safe and warm. I am confident it was the right decision, but I do miss him. I will pass along the puppyrubs as soon as possible :) Hope your mom recovers quickly and easily, and WARMLY! No power outages!

Well, yeah, could be!  Might be different now, but I always told my kids that if someone had a lighted pumpkin but no light they might have a scarey setup that needed to be dark, or, they might be some kind of freak.  Of course when I was trick or treating we could take homemade goodies and candy didn't have to be xrayed.......Sad

Porch light on = t-o-t is the rule around here as well. Smile

Courtney my family on LI is reporting further power losses, treacherous roads, and just continued chaos. My sister & family are staying at mom's teeny place because she got power back but my brother's home is destroyed so he and his family will need to go back to her if they can't find temp housing through FEMA. They were with her (mom) until Sunday but were able to stay with a friend for a few days. Two cousin's are displaced as well, one should be able to go back once the road is fixed but the other will be in the same shoes as my brother. I am exhausted just worrying, never mind living this nightmare. I really can't imagine being in a nor'easter without heat & power :(

same here re the t&t - lights on, open for business, lights off no more candy :)

Yes, porch light on is generally the rule here. I don't know that theirs works. They had the front hall light and kitchen light on. They don't usually, and it looked pretty well. It was just as bright as my house. They have also given out candy every year they've lived here (7 or 8 years). I usually sit out, but not with the snow this year, as does someone at their house typically. I figured they were doing the same as me and sitting inside because of the weather. She could have told one of the kids to tell us they had no candy. The thing is, we're all pretty friendly on my street, except one Korean family down the end. They're nice, but they don't really talk to everyone. It was just odd, but maybe you'd have to know things here and have seen it to get it.

OMG my feet are KILLING ME. I have been in 3 inch heeled boots since 5:30 this morning. I just took them off and I think my feet swore at me. Crazy LONG day but it's almost the weekend!!! Whoo Hoo!

I just saw that one of the kids I work with, her school is still closed, and will not reopen until next week. Two weeks to make up, and winter hasn't even started. After two weeks off, you definitely have to go back and do some reviewing. For some kids I work with, two weeks off, they just can't do it. They lose so much off what they've learned. She had just gotten something, we missed a week from the storm, and it was like she had never seen it before.

Apparently, I was right in the heavy snow band. Earlier today, they said it wasn't going to stick.

My dentist conned me in to coming on Monday for an appointment. She wanted to use one of my fillings for an exam. I didn't really want to go on Monday afternoon. Hopefully I can get out in time to go to work. I guess I like her enough though to do it, though I'm not sure why you'd want to use someone who is severely phobic for your exam.
