A great all-around dog/kids link that Gina posted on another board

spiritdogs, i have never ever stated in one of my posts that all ;pits and rotts or any dogs in a certain breed are bad.  and i have never stated that anyones dogs here on this site are bad dogs.  so yeah, i think its perfectly normal for me to take offense to you saying my kids will terrorize a dog.

jeano, ive said 3 times in the past two days, that i have switched sides, yet you all are being more negative to me now than ever.  THATS what i find interesting.

    You've switched sides?
    Somehow I missed that!

So Sally can meet your kids? And Markie? So you think breed bans are ineffective also? I'm just asking for confirmation here.

No one is being negative, we're just talking!

Well, *I* take offense at the suggestion that our moderator's lovely show dogs should be banned.  They are AmStaffs, but genetically identical to Pit Bulls. Before you assume anything about a particular breed, it pays to know more about it than you read in the headlines.
Since you obviously are offended by me, at least ask Jaime for her educated opinion on her own breed.

And, frankly, since even after I explained my reasoning, you are still defensive about your kids, perhaps you should consider buying them a stuffed dog - they really are the only safe ones, you know.   Many people go out and buy Bichons or Goldens or Labs thinking they are a "friendly" breed, find that, as pups, they are very mouthy and then dump it at the shelter when it turns into an adolescent because they mistakenly assume that it is "aggressive" when it nips their precious little Fauntleroy for sticking his fingers in the dog's eye or rolling around on the floor with it (if it looks like a puppy, dogs play with it like it's a puppy - and pups play rough).  If you are serious about getting your kids a dog, my advice would be to lose any attitude you have about your kids being perfect, learn about the dog breeds you are considering, and read the following book:
    "Raising Puppies and Kids Together"
No one much appreciates it when their favorite breed is trashed, any more than you would  like it if someone suggested your little angels might grow up to be ax murderers, and most dog message boards, except the ones devoted to dog bite victims, aren't the most friendly place when you start advocating BSL.

yeah, ive said it at least four or five times by now.  the person who posted right after you still hasnt caught it or just doesnt care, hes found someone to pick on and hes going to do it, and yes spirtidogs is being very negative to me in that post by the way..... interesting.

edit:  sorry jeano, just in case i didnt answer clearly enough..... yes, i think breed bans would probably be ineffective.  but, that is still just my opinion.  im not going to bash someone and tell them they are "wrong" if they are for breed bans.  i will simply them why I THINK its not a good idea.

and to whoever it was that assumed i have no experience with dogs, i never said that either.  i just havnt owned one personally in a long time, since before i had kids.  the last i dog owned was a german shepherd.  the dog i owned before that was a spaniel.  both very sweet dogs.

jaye, I'm relieved to hear that you've decided breed bans are ineffective.

In one of your other posts you said that you looked at a shelter and commented on how it was overrun with pitties.  It's true.  It's like that in lots of urban areas all over the country.  It's very sad for those poor dogs that wind up in the shelter or chained to a tree starving to death.  Just today I was driving to get lunch and a starving pittie was trying to avoid traffic.  He had apparently chewed himself free from whatever he was tied to, because part of his tie-out was still connected to his collar and dragging.  It's owners such as that which cause the problems with pitties overrunning the shelters.  The sad part is that in my city that pittie will be picked up by animal control and they won't allow him to be adopted out because he is a pit.  He will be put to sleep.

We need to hold people like this responsible.  It saddens me so much because I know what wonderful animals these dogs make.  I don't understand how they don't want them as a member of the family, but instead just a possession.   Something to make them look tough.  I really don't understand people like that.  *sigh*

    thank you lexibelle.

Pardon me, Jaye, but I didn't say anything negative to you until after you called the idea of equating guns with dogs "silly".  If you think it's silly to think that anyone would replace a dog with a gun, you've never heard of drug dealers either, right?  Gimme a break - they'll use anything that they have to in order to protect the stash.  And you are quite silly if you think that a ban on assault rifles means anything to people like that.  They may go through a few more breeds before they get to the guns, I admit.  Someone mentioned Presas, but Filas will be on their list, too.  And, if you think a Pit is a manstopper, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

    you missed the point.
but even if that was my point, it would still be no excuse for you to be rude.

You know,  I mentioned I was bitten three times by dogs.  however, the WORST bite I have EVER received came from...a Pot Belly Pig! She didn't take a chunk out of my leg, but came darned close. I had a bruise the size of my fist that took months to completely heal. As a country girl, I can tell you this: I am waaay more concerned about a sow coming at me than most dogs.

jaye, I think I have been very pointed, but I don't think I've been rude.  Of course, if you would like me to be, just go ahead and suggest that they oughta ban Aussies...[;)]

spiritdogs, arent you at all happy about the fact that ive changed my mind about breed bans?  how about some positive reinforcement instead continuing to post negatively toward me??  maybe i should  change my mind back since no one seems to care.

    Hey no going back [:)]

    WOOOHOOOO!!!!!

    Another one possibly CONVERTED?!?!?!?!

    Jaye,
If this is truely what has happened...Good for YOU!  I'm glad you've stuck it out and opened your mind. Big dogs of any breed can bite and will do damage if owned by irresponsible owners....not just APBT's and Rotti's. You have to look beyond the breeds and see the owners, then you will see the truth of "WHY" these dogs have bitten or attacked.

Anne, I tried early on with pictures and thank you for your kind words. Markie sends a big kiss your way!

yes, amstaffy arent you happy for me?  im really glad i stayed in the forum even though there are a couple meanieheads here the rest of you have taught me a lot, not just in this thread but others as well.  like i said before, i never had anything against the dogs i was just all about prevention but now i see how a breed ban would be 100% ineffective.  so now.... im actually looking at two pit bulls right now to adopt!(not both, i just have to decide between the two).  im coming out kaykay!  im just waiting to hear from my apartment manager whether or not there is a weight limit / breed restriction.  here are pictures of the two dogs i am considering.  they are both currently in foster homes.  the first is a pit bull the 2nd is a boxer/amstaff mix.  she was found on the street just after haveing babies, they dont were the babies are.  they are both described as being cuddlers, good with kids, and other animals.  ive also joined a pit bull forum so i can learn more about the breed.

edit:  i guess i did the pictures wrong it didnt work.
