Another Town Passes Vicious Dog Ordinance

I'll tell you the reason I have my dogs is because I rescued a pit fighting dog...she was the sweetest dog I ever had despite what her owners taught her to do. I worked her in obedience and she was able to become a dog who could be trusted with other animals even off lead!

The APBT is a great breed, they are sweet lovable dogs who just want top please their owners 110% which is why they do what they do with all they have for those slugs and scum bags who really don't care about life or the quality of it.

Apartment living is ok for this breed as long as you do spend time making your dog think and work out the energy by going for walks and a lot of play and lovin'

These guys really aren't meanie heads...they are just passionate in what they believe and to be honest, they were being very good with you...I've seen much worse

Please keep us posted on how things are going and as far as a forum goes, I'd take a look at [linkhttp://www.purebredpuppy.com]www.purebredpuppy.com[/link] I frequent there at times. I hope you find the perfect new companion

Jaye, I just have to say kudos to you for doing so much research before getting your dog.  If more people put as much time into research before they got their dogs like you are then there'd be far fewer dogs in shelters.

How old are the dogs that you're looking at?  I think that with such small children you may need a dog that is not too hyper, so a middle aged dog might be your best bet.  Something around 4 or 5 perhaps.

Anyone have any opinions on that?

thanks lexi )  i have been looking at dogs from 1 - 3 years.  i dont want a puppy but i didnt want to go too old and start off with a dog that might not be around too long or start off with health problems but i think you are right i think 4 or 5 would be a good age.  the dogs i listed are about 1 1/2 years.

edit:  sorry, twiggy is 2 years.

I have to agree that an older dog, out of the puppy stages are much easier to live with.

I would suggest just taking plenty of time interacting the dog with your children before committing to any breed of dog...not just a few minutes one time but an extended amount of time even more then once just so you can see how well they all get along.

I guess we can now count on you when we are doing our letter writing!!!

    Here you go :)

that one is twiggy, do you think 2 years would be too young for us?  and how did you get that to work??
    • Gold Top Dog
Two is a decent age...usually out of the chewy stage and generally settled. I would suggest taking her to a class as these guys will walk all over you if you let them...even if you don't let them..LOL! They have a way of making you think you are the boss and they still get what they want :)

I copied the picture address without the [image] tags and then pasted it in my browser, when the picture came up I saved it to my PC and then just uploaded it in the post

    they are both soooo beautiful!!!

Are they being fostered?  Is there a way you and your children might be able to have an extended visit with them to see what kind of fit they are?  Someplace like someone's home without a lot of distractions to see what their energy level is.  And I agree that the best way to decide is to meet them several times.  Another option is that the shelter here offers a "trial period" of 7 days, so you can actually make sure that all the family members and pets will get along.  Maybe your shelter has something similiar.

yeah they are both with foster families.  i just got done talking to twiggy's foster mom and we re going to work out a day to visit.  they live about an hour and a half away so it might hard to do a lot of visits but ill ask about the trial period thing.

They all look really sweet!  I dont think two is too young, just leaving puppyhood.  Any one that you seem to have more of a connection with?  Or did I miss something and you havn't met them yet?  Sorry trying to keep up.
    • Gold Top Dog
yeah i havnt met them yet, but im leaning toward twiggy at this point, just because its easier to communicate with her foster mom.  but with our schedules and they live about an hour and a half away i probably wont be able to meet her until next weekend.  we re on our way out right now to go look at the local shelter again.

I think it's nice you changed your mind about the Pits & Rotts, jaye.  Enough so that I will ignore the fact that I think the "meanyhead" comment was unnecessary.  Look who's calling the kettle black.

we saw a nice little girl at the pound today.  i think the paper said she is 1 1/2 years old i cant remember for sure after looking at so many profiles.  she seemed really mellow but she has a cold right now.  thats not a bad sign is it?  we couldnt spend any time with her cause shes still a stray until the 30th but we can preadopt her.  we have to go back to the shelter tomorrow to have a counceling or something about adopting her.  i still want to meet twiggy too.  but if we wind up hitting it off with this dog it would be more convenient since its a lot closer.  they dont have a refund policy which i think is good, but you have time to decide if its going to work or not.  if not then you can bring her back and you have up to 6 months to choose another dog.  i think thats a great policy.  sorry if im going too much off topic i know this isnt what the thread is about.
i wouldnt mind if anyone had name suggestions.... i like people names for dogs.  right now im considering sadie.
