Ate huge bag of Pigs Raw Hyde!

We are looking after my parents Lab/Pitbull cross for the week.  He is an extreme excape artist.  He is used to having free range of my parents farm, but because we live in town he had to be tied up.  That didn't work (tried a lot of different harnesses) so we had to keep him inside.  Of course he HATES staying inside.  We have been trying to keep him downstairs while we are at work, put up baby gates and boxes, but NOTHING seems to keep him in!  He is SOOOO smart!

Anyways, I came home to find that he had gotten through our barrier, again, and had gone into the kitchen where I keep a HUGE bag of pig raw hydes.  He ate every last one of them! They have totally disappeard!

Will this hurt him?  Should I take him to the vet?  He seems fine, but I just think that eating those probably are not going to do him good.

I would expect a lot of diarrhea o.o  I'll pray for you all, LOL

Oh man someone is going to have a upset tummy for awhile. I dont think tehre is cause to go to the vet or anything but defintly keep a eye on him and make sure he is pooping properly. Hopefully he chewed them up really good so they dont cause a blockage. You may have to get him some pumpkin to settle his tummy but you can also give him pepto if he seems upset. I'd say dont give him any food that maybe be considered rich, including wet food but agin the main thing is that he poops. Obviously tell his owners so they can keep a eye on his future bowel movements but I dont see any cause for panic

I agree with Shep...some canned pumpkin or pepto bismol tablets, watch him to make sure he poops, or go and look for recent bowel movements.  Pig ears are not like rawhide per se, as they are more digestible (they're like crunchy skin chips), and break apart more easily.

Still watch for blockages, but really, I'd just expect some vomiting and diarrhea, which isn't a bad thing necessarily, since he's ridding himself of all the fat he ingested (pig ears are very high in fat)

This is my main concern.  With my little dog, he never actually eats the raw hydes.  He chews on them for days and I finnally throw them out.  (That bag would have lasted at least a year) I don't see how he could have chewed them up, he probably just swallowed them.  He has a really tough stomach,  I hope that he doesn't get any blockages.  I will be praying that he goes to the bathroom!

I really think he needs a crate to keep him in. He is just confused on where he is and that is why he tryes so hard to escape, this is a sign of seperation anxioty. He may eat as a way of conforting himself, which is why he at the whole thing.

Mainly just keep and eye on him and watch for stool, I know you had a bit of a problem when you first started watching him about hm not going. Try yougurt, pumpkin and that might help. They should be alright since it's only the skin, think jerky only a little harder.

While I'm sure a Lab/pit could chew through many rawhides, I wonder it maybe he stashed a bunch somewhere. Wouldn't be too surprised to find a pile next time you move the couch. [:D]

Can't, tried, he has never been crated & he freaked out.  (I borrowed a friends).  Oh well, he seems happiest when he is upstairs with the other dogs.  I will just dog proof my house!

Hmmmm.... you know maybe you are right.  I'll go searching.  I gave him a bone yesterday and he went striaght to the back yard and started digging a hole to put it in!  So he might have done that.
Hopefully there is no hole in my livingroom![:D]

    Thanks!

I didnt even consider he is part pit, I know this sounds like a huge generalization but pits can stomach A LOT!!!! The hiding idea is a hige and definite possibility, that would be hilarious!
As for crating him I agree it may not be a good idea since he is in a new place without his owners and has never been crated before. Pits can be very stubborn, self destructive when enclosed if they arnt used to it and (I know many will disagree) but they hold grudges, haha. Maybe not so much as a grudge but they can sure pout!

This is not new advice, but I would definitely watch his bowel movements.  Dogs get into things all the time, but this is a bit more of a concern.  Considering though that it wasnt rawhide, you should be ok.

Once his stomach settles and his bowels are good, his main enormous problem is:

    Lack Of Exercise!

45 minutes in the morning, 45 minutes at night.  This will help a ton with the escape artist stuff, chewing, etc.  Daily. No exceptions. You should start this and the owner should follow up.  It's best for the dog.

    Best wishes!

My dog Cassidy doesn't seem to ever have any problems no matter what she eats![:-] One day while we were gone ( this was one of the first few times I left her in the house alone) she got into her treat stash--which I didn't put up somewhere, this was my fault!-- but anyway, she ate a few of the crunchy rawhide ones, and I think about 40 of the rawhide sticks. She has also eaten almost a whole box of dog treats, and never seems to have any effects from this. She's really not that obsessed by food, like it seems here, but when she's left by herself she'll eat whatever is accessable to her--which is one reason why she stays outside when we're gone [;)]

Shamrockmommy: No worries, he gets more than enough exercise. While he is staying here he gets walked for 1 hour before work and 1 hour when I get home from work. Then all of the dogs play, then nap time and then another walk before bed. As for my parents (the owners), my mom works out of her home and spends hours with him on exercise, plus he is an outdoor dog and has free reign of 50 acres.

Anyways, he had a bowl movement and it was normal! I looked all over the house and didn't find any of the raw hydes anywhere, but you never know he is sneaky!

Thanks for all of the help!

I would think that within 24 to 48 hours, if he really did eat all those pig hides, that he'll have a couple massive barfs and that will be that!

Have you sat on the couch yet? Our dog used to hide stuff underneath our couch cushions. [:D] It was always funny to sit down, frown, and pull a dog bone out from under the cushion.
