I was wondering if someone would catch that.

There was a passing thought on that over here too.

I think training is just like learning about anything else...you do your research, take a little from each person you learn from, and make it work for you. That's what I did with Marley. I learned from many different people (including people on this forum) and then took what worked for Marley and me.

I admit that I do watch CM and I have even read his book (I like to educate myself before I place judgement upon people)! I think the one thing I valued from him and took into my training of Marley was his philosophy for having a balanced dog...I think many people on this forum would agree that this is a good philosophy. He thinks that dogs need 3 things to be balanced in this order:
    1. Excercise
    2. Rules, boundaries, and limitations
    3. Affection

I think everyone here probably does these things already and thus do not have major problems with their dogs...therefore CM's methods are not needed! Just my [sm=2cents.gif]

On a side note...this is probably a good formula for raising kiddos! As a teacher, I find that those kiddos that do not have the rules, boundaries, and limitations are the ones that have the most difficult time in school![:)]

Thanks for all the great info.  I love both people and pets and I appreciate the broad range of opinions.  I like Cesar Milan.  Millions of dogs get put to sleep every year and he has saved thousands from death.  If he does or does not have the "best" training method in the world, that is not my concern.  I appreciate the way he cares for human beings and animals.  That is how I see it.  Debating over the greatest dog method is not my cup of tea.  I will always be a fan of Cesar no matter what! Yes, millions of dogs are euthed every year.  I'm sorry but I don't see Cesar making a huge big deal about responsible breeding, about spay/nueter, etc, and the bulk of the dogs put to death are NOT dogs with behavioral problems, but rather dogs who there simply aren't enough homes for.  Nor do I see him reminding folks that when you bring an animal home you darned well better be ready to make a LIFETIME commitment to that animal.

Yes, Cesar has shown some success with wildly out of control dogs...but had the owners done their job in the first place and trained those dogs while they were YOUNG, his type of yank and crank training would NOT be needed.

He DOES speak out against BSL however, something that is very much needed and appreciated from this end at least.

IDK, I do know a girl who has a young pit that she got as a pup.  She does watch CM, and though she is not a huge hardcore fan of his, she did tell me that his method has helped her teach her pitty to loose leash walk, without anything but a flat collar, and says that his advice has halped her train her dog to be a good citizen.

Wasn't there someone who came here with a dog that CM had trained and she was looking to rehome the dog?  Anyone remember that?
    • Gold Top Dog
I remember that.  I don't know if I recall the initial thread, or I recall seeing it reposted later on, but yep, that did happen.

I did. One of his Katrina dog episodes. He reunited the dog with it's family, now living, I think, in California. Anyway, he provided an epilogue at the end of the show wherein he stressed the importance of spay/neuter. Methods aside, I think he is all about commitment. He tells of the importance of exercise, obedience, affection and wants his clients to maintain that so that they can continue to enjoy their pet. I think those motives are steadfast, whether we agree with his methods, or not.

I picked up that same quote...and was going to mention that episode! They even showed him taking all three dogs to the vet and he explained exactly what happened. About half of his dogs at his dog psychology center are dogs that were unwanted. He usually has anywhere from 40 to 50 dogs if I recall correctly (mostly rotties (sp?)and pitt bulls)! I figure...at least he's giving those dogs homes!

Pitties and Rotties are his favorite breeds and I'm fairly certain that he is against BSL. As he points out, most dog problems are actually human problems. That's why he states, "I rehabilitate dogs, I train people." Regardless of methods, that much is true. And there is no bigger problem than dog fighters giving Pits a bad rep. If even half the time spent on BSL was spent on busting dog fighters with harsh penalties, like jail time and huge fines, things might be different. But it's easier to pick on a dog than a criminal.
