    Very Scary Incident - CoBuHe

Could have been so much worse...let me just start off with that.

Today, Rocky, one of our 3 cats, found himself in the jaws of Buddy.

Somehow, Rocky got outside.  My theory is this:  The housekeepers were here today.  While they are here, I put the dogs in the backyard with all the gates closed so they can't get into the front or the pool area or in the house.  After the housekeepers left, it was probably about 30 or 45 minutes before I let the dogs free.  During this time, Rocky likely found his way out the dog door to the garage.  Or, perhaps he ran outside when the housekeepers were getting their stuff together to leave.  I don't know.

What I do know is this:  The dogs are now free to be whereever they want outside..front, back or their part of the gated house.  All of of a sudden, I hear Heidi's distinct bark at the front door...like she had something cornered.  She did.  Then, all of a sudden (I could see out the front window)...all three dogs run around to the garage and into the gated area.  This is where I find all three dogs head down on the cat.  Buddy had Rocky in his jaws.  Thankfully, Buddy dropped him when I told him too.

Rocky tried to squeeze himself through the gate but got stuck.  Buddy tried again to grab the cat while he was stuck.  Heidi then tried to get the cat.  So, the cat is stuck; and I am trying to get all three dogs away from him.  In this process, the cat bites my finger...so, I am punctured and bleeding all over the place.  I was finally able to get all three dogs outside, behind closed doors.

Now I have to deal with a stuck cat.  Forget that I'm bleeding.  I have to get this cat out.  I call Rick and ask him where the bolt cutters are (he just bought some recently, weird).  He told me where they were and I ran out to the shed to get them.  By the time I got back, Rocky had gotten out.

I go find him, and do a body check.  No blood, no pain when I examine him.  He seems to be ok.  I can't believe it.

So, Buddy COULD have done some real damage, but he didn't.  He COULD have chomped down on the cat, but instead had him in a soft hold.  I've seen this dog kill cats before.  I've seen firsthand the damage he could do.  BUT HE DIDN'T.

When all three dogs had him cornered, they could have torn him apart.  BUT THEY DIDN'T.

I called the vet and they told me what to watch out for.  We made a tentative appt just in case.

So, after I examine the cat, I need to deal with my throbbing, bleeding finger.  I doctor it up, ice it and bandage it.  Call the doctor and he's called in some antibiotics for me.  I need to go take some Advil. It hurts.

I'm watching Rocky like a hawk.  He seems to be fine so far.

Very scary, but could have been so much worse.

    Barbara, that is scary!

I hope Rocky is no worse for the wear.  And you, too.  Cat bite wounds are prone to infection, so glad you called your doctor.  You may recall my DS's incident with Moose that turned into 2 antibiotic shots as well as 10 days worth of antibiotic pills.

    (((Hugs)))

Oh my goodness, I do remember that.  Your son was mauled by Moose.  That was bad.

Yes I worry about infection and I also worry about it being so painful and swollen.  I can't bend it either.

OMG that is too scary.  I'm so glad that Rocky is ok.  I know how painful cat bites are and hope you heal fast.

owwwwww -- I'm too slow by far to have two species that don't get along.  Bless your heart -- you can't even ice it b/c it's a puncture, right?  ow ow ow

Rocky is very lucky! My mom and sisters lost one of their cats in just this way years ago...with the 3 resident dogs and an escapee. I am so glad your kitty appears to have made it thru. Make sure he's eating and not hiding too much, bad signs. I hope your finger gets to being okay too! ((hugs))

Well, its a puncture and 3 scrapes.  I had to ice it though.  It was swelling up and getting blue.

Exactly Gina, thats what the vet said.  Make sure he is moving around, not laying down constantly.  Make sure he is eating, drinking, etc.

On last examination...he is merely covered in dried Buddy slobber.

    We are indeed very lucky.

Barbara, one more thought from me.  Years ago I had a cat named Gordon who was picked up and shaken severely by a neighbor's yellow Lab.  (My then DH thought it was okay to let the cats outside).  When I finally found Gordon hiding under our porch, I took him into the house, set him down, and he fell flat on his face.  I rushed him to the vet, who found nothing external and wasn't able to see anything on xray.  Gordon came home.  Two or three days later I found an open, weeping wound on the side of his abdomen.  The damage had been done internally - an intestinal tear - which took a couple days of weeping into his abdomen before the hole opened up to let the bad stuff out.  Back he went to the vet and $300 + worth of exploratory surgery later, the tear was found and stitched.  Gordon lived to be a ripe old 16, but likely would have been a goner if I had not noticed the weeping wound.

My point is what you probably already know - to watch Rocky for several days just in case.

Whew!!  So scary!!! I'm so glad Rocky is OK and hope you are, too.... cat bites hurt like crazy.  I hope you're feeling better soon!!

    • Gold Top Dog

Oh man, how scary!! I'm glad the cat is ok. Whew! I hope your finger heals up quickly.

Hmm...it's best for punctures not to close too quickly...can you make it ooze a bit? That really would be for the best I think. Punctures need to heal from the bottom...if the top closes too soon they will abcess. :( Maybe a soak in some warm water?

    • Gold Top Dog

Tina yes...any shaking is what really worries me...

I would be really really tempted to complete SHAVE any areas that were in the dogs mouth. Often bruising is your only clue...and you will not see that thru fur.

    • Gold Top Dog

Thanks guys!  I am very surprised at how badly it hurts.

Tina, I am concerned about internal injuries for Rocky and will definately monitor him over the next several days.

Rick told me after all this happened to call our daughter and see if she will take him.  You might remember I wanted to rehome Rocky to her a while back because of the disharmony in the house between dogs/cats.

I'm not going to jump up and do that, but I sure will think about it again.  I love the cats, but I don't want the cats. Embarrassed  Does that make sense?  Tough situation to be in.

Good idea about shaving him...I just may do that.

I'll also soak my hand in some warm water...probably would feel good.

ETA:  And, it does make it feel better.  Big Smile  After it all happened this morning I ran hydrogen peroxide over it several times before I bandaged it.  There's no ooze as I squeeze and soak it.  TMI?  LOL

ouch, cat bites are the worst! I hope it all heals well and the cat turns out ok. I understand loving cats but not wanting them, believe me.
