We need some name suggestions - new family member! (tacran)

Some of you know we've been without a dog for a very long time (it was over 5 years ago that our beloved Tonka went to the Bridge).  I realize that 99% of people couldn't imagine waiting that long to get another dog, but there are many reasons for this, and I'd need a separate thread to explain them!

Yesterday we visited a dog at our local shelter.  Since I'm a volunteer, they let us bring her home for a few hours today to see how she did before making a final decision.  She did very well meeting our neighbor's dog, two neighbors' 4- and 5-year old children, and several adults -- very calm, taking treats gently (always sitting first), and walking fairly well on the leash.  Although I still have reservations about having a dog again, we made it an official adoption this evening!

So, we want a new name (her name now is Tig - but it doesn't suit her).  She's about a year old, a pitbull mix, kind of a greyish/taupe color with white on her chest and paws.  We'd like a name that's 1 or 2 syllables, kind of sweet, female sounding, something that might bring a smile (she's got a pink collar -- we want her to look cute and friendly to help dispel some prejudice).  We've been trying to think of words that relate to things like cooking, food, gardening, music references, book or movie characters (although common people names aren't my favorite).  Foreign languages are fine, something fun and unusual would be a bonus.  I like long vowel sounds, but DH doesn't care, as long as it rolls off the tongue relatively easily.

I'd love some suggestions -- our list is too short, and we haven't found one we both love.  Some are:  Echo, Kiwi, Eve, Ruby, Nora, and Pearl.  I know a photo would be helpful, but being the idiot I am, I haven't figured out how to post one yet.  If anyone has any ideas, they'd be most welcome!

    Yay, congrats!

Let's see.... something sweet to dispel some prejudice that's easy and cute....

    Halo

    Pancakes

    Lola

and I really like Kiwi too!

Congratulations.  No hurry on the name.  I like to get to know the dog a bit, then the name becomes obvious.

I'm not great at names....but you could borrow my cat's name.  For some reason it popped into my head.

    Neigi   pronounced  "knee-gee"

It's an Ojibway Indian word meaning "friend"

Congratulations on the adoption.  I'm sure it will be a bit strange having a dog in the house again....but I'm also guessing she will fit in very quickly  Smile

Yay!!  Congrats, on your new kiddo!!  For some reason Pansy came to mind.  If you want to e-mail me a picture of her I'll gladly post it for you.

Thanks for the ideas -- it helps to add more to the list.  I like that "Halo" connects to an angel.  And "Pansy" is very cute.  I like flower names, such as Daisy, but DH wasn't crazy about that one.  Mindy, thank you for generously offering your cat's name!  I was telling DH that there are lots of great dog names on this forum, but I don't want to steal anyone else's name!

A couple names I like are in Italian:  Baci (kisses) and Dolce (sweet), but they might not sound obviously female.  Like Doug suggested, I'd prefer to wait and see what comes to us as we get to know her, but DH wants a name ASAP because he wants to use it as he's training with her.

Annie, I will email you a photo or two -- thanks for offering!

I just want to say congrats!  I am terrible at names and without a picture.............I can't even get started without seeing her face :)

I'm with you though in that it takes a bit of time to put a name on a living creature - good thing I didn't have kids  LOL

Since I have the pics (Tracy sent them to me) I can help on that part. :)  She is so cute!!  I just want to squish that face! lol...

What popped into my head was Thyme.  As in "about Thyme" and "her Thyme has come". he he....

or what about Rosemary?  Apparently I have an herb image thing going. lol...

Thanks, Leslie!!  I hadn't sent the photos to Annie yet -- you beat me to it!

It's funny you mentioned the name Thyme -- we had a few "spices" on the list last night.  Since Jeff is such a good chef, we were trying to think of food-related names, and he was hunting through the spice drawers.  We had Thyme, Sage, Rose(mary), Clove, Nutmeg, Cayenne, and maybe a couple more.  Nutmeg and Cayenne imply a brownish or reddish color, so they didn't seem quite right, but we liked the others.

Speaking of food names -- my sister's two cats were Gorg and Zola.  I always thought that was hilarious.  Her husband really is a chef, and they both love cheese!

I just love her face! I must have looked at these pics a dozen times since you sent them.  he he....

Dang it -- I lost what I tried to post *grump*

She looks like a Mollye to me.

Some Scots/Celtic (as opposed to Irish Celtic) words

Corrie -- lowland Scots for "kettle"

Cahlin -- young girl (say "Cahl-lean --  a definite h sound in the middle, emphasis on 2d syllable)

    Bonny -- beautiful

Mairi -- (say Mayer-eee) - the English is Mary.  But it's just SO pretty said in Scots

Ceilidh -- (say Kay-lee) -- a social gathering or informal party (dancing, fun, all ages -- grab the babies & old ladies and everyone dance & have fun)

Caoilinn or Cailin  (say Kay-leen) -- slender+bright, fair (Gaelic but Irish Gaelic)

Cahlinn -- (say cah-lean) -- another derivative of young girl.

Lassie -- (say "la-see" emphasis on 2d syllable -- not like Timmy's Lassie LOL) -- little girl

     OMG she's gorgeous!!!

Been looking at the pic over and over - I like the name Sage. She looks wise and the herb is silvery like her coat.

The herb sage is salvia in Italian

    • Gold Top Dog
