I have puppy fever - I've got it bad

I think Bugs would make an EXCELLENT big brother! Don't feel guilty over wanting to go the breeder route over rescue this time - they are both valid options, you just have to stick with whatever fits your household.

I totally have puppy fever too. I always have it. I am a huge puppy person. I don't care if puppies come all untrained, their cuteness far outweighs the no training. DH and I have brought up the idea, but we both like just the two dogs right now and it really isn't time for us to add another realistically. Our puppy fever is for a few different breeds, most commonly, a little staffie (we would have to move to be able to own one), a saint bernard, bernese mountain dog, or newfoundland.

This is what has my hubby stirred up...lol.  His April BMD calendar has a pic of 2 adorable Bernese puppies.  He keeps saying how he wishes we could have had Hot as a pup and saved him all the bad stuff the first 3 years of his life.   I guess once you've gone with a big dog you just cant go back.  I will say after 2 Rottie's with slobbery mouths (my grandson always said "Shadow is leaking papa";) having a BMD is different.  He doesnt slobber but he does shed much more than our Rotties.

Remember when I found Bruder?!?  It took a few days for Rick to realize that the time was right.  Patience and persuasiveness are key!  Rick wanted nothing to do with a third dog.  But given the time to think about it and my super skills we now have this precious addition.

It never hurts for your DH to actually see a potential puppy.  Wink

I am right there with you Karen! I have wanted a puppy going on a year now. I have older dogs, Kota is retired from our favorite activity and so I started working with Tasha more but she doesn't have the greatest structure, she's cow-hocked in the back and now with this lump and all. But I know now is not a good time to get a new pup. I have other things that are way more pressing in my life but man, every puppy I come into contact with.... oh boy.

If someone dropped an aussie or BC in my yard, I'd try to convince DH to let me keep it.  Merle preferably and have to be male.  Wink

You could always go Deb's route and get your DH drunk on whiskey!

I definitely have a love for big dogs - no kidding looking at my list right? There are a couple smaller dogs that I just have to have one day (or have) - beagle, whippet, beagle/daschund mix (from a shelter/rescue of course - my neighbours have one, or what I assume is one and it is THE cutest thing)....but I can't see myself ever really owning any other small dogs. I will happily love on other people's small dogs though!

OH EMM GEE... that puppy is pointing at, what, 8-9 weeks old?  (I'm guessing, maybe even younger?)

Karen, I'm really pulling for you on a puppy.  Big Smile   I've got more faith in your powers of persuasion than you do. A few drinks first couldn't hurt. lol

Karen - you have  a LOT to be responsible for!! *tapping foot*

I very NEARLY fell prey to PetFinder today looking at seniors -- you and Tina.  (and her story about the lady who took the blind dog and the one with cancer) *sigh*

We've all got our weaknesses you know??  Unfortunately (or fortunately) I think we're all a bunch of happy enablers!!  Not that any of us want to stop, you understand *grin*

Shesh Karen....it's bout time you feel the same way Bugsy does.   If you don't get a pup for you get one for Bugsy.....his dream come true???

    Lani.....I think i'm in love!

Paige - about 10 weeks, nice guess! :)  He's pointing Nikki... who didn't appreciate it very much. LOL

Thanks Johnny, they are almost irresistable aren't they?

I like what Jackie had to say.... you're good, but drinks before hand can't hurt! :)  We haven't heard from you since the tornado, and I'm praying you guys are all safe, and worried sick!!!!

I swear to god, my first guess was 10 weeks, but then I thought it might have been younger.  Ahh, go with your first instinct! lol  PUPPER!!

I sort of have puppy fever, but honestly, I'm just ready to move on and have a big dog in my life again. I love Lizzie and she's great, but there's so many things she DOESN'T enjoy that I can do with a bigger dog (particularly longer hikes on leash, swimming). And even after puppy comes home, I know I'm looking at 18 months of obnoxiousness before the worst of the baby phases are over and I have a mostly-trained and useful SD again. I miss the freedom Kaylee gave me, and I really hope this next dog will live up to my hopes.

Part of my desire is to have a dog that is a size more suited to running longer distances.  Bugsy would love to but his knees are a disaster and his size was always going to be a negative for long distance stuff.

Due to the tornadoes we didn't chat this weekend but I am going to put it in action today.  The pup I am looking at has two others thinking about it so we'll see.

With regard to the dog/DH thing.... in our household the GSDs are definitely "my" dogs.  I refer to them as "mine" and DH refers to them as "her dogs" or "Lies' dogs".  DH loves dogs and his family always had a small dog growing up, but he is not interested in the slightest at the level that I am.  We both realize this and as long as I am realistic about the care and training I can provide, DH usually doesn't say much one way or the other about what dogs I get and where/when/how I get them.  I guess in our relationship it's unrealistic for us to be 100% on the same page all the time especially about dogs.  The dogs are my "thing", always have been and always will be.  If we weren't together, I'm not sure DH would have any pets.  DH has a lot of hobbies that he does on a regular basis and I am not really a part of that or his decision which leagues to join, what equipment to get, etc.  We just set a limit like three dogs, three cats or something like that and I'm free to "move around" within that limit; likewise when it comes to DH's activities we will set a limit like we don't care when he plays what sport as long as he's free to be with me or help out around the house on Saturdays.
