Sorry to be a party pooper, but what if the Jehovah's Wittnesses had instead been, say, a victim of a car crash who was pounding frantically at your door to get help?
Sorry, Amanda, but I think if the poster of this story had been a forum newbie, it would be met with a very different response. I really don't think it's a good idea to celebrate aggression towards strangers, even if they're where they shouldn't be (like at the back door). I'm glad that neither dogs nor humans were seriously injured, but it could have been a very different ending.
I know you post all the time about how well-trained your dogs are in many challenging situations, which shows you clearly put a ton of time into training and socializing them. Still, regardless of training level, I really think it's dangerous to have dogs whose first instinct is to attack strangers on "their" property. Barking and growling and "cornering" people until you get there is one thing, but actually grabbing and dragging someone? Assuming the story isn't significantly embellished, I don't think that kind of canine behavior is something to applaud.
If any lurkers are reading, I don't want them to come away from the thread with the idea that a dog (especially something like a Doberman) should be rewarded for attacking people, regardless of whether they're in the front of the house, back of the house, preaching about Jesus, or delivering Christmas fruitcake. I don't believe we should trust dogs' judgment as to who is a threat and is "okay" to attack and who is not - that's our job to judge. Today's unwanted Jehovah's Witness is tomorrow's delivery guy with bad judgment.
Sorry, I don't mean to be a thread-pooper, but I really think that encouraging that type of "protection" is dangerous. How often do we come down hard on posters who want a dog "for protection"? And we say that it's a bad idea, dangerous to others, a bad representation of the breed, etc.?
I'm very glad that all the people and dogs came out of this more or less okay. It's a good thing you were there to watch them!
