Glenda, BF's mom grows a few thousand bulbs of garlic every year. PM me if you have any questions, I'll pass them on and she would be more than happy to answer them! Basically, once you pull them up, BRUSH the dirt off as best you can and then hang to dry for 1-2 weeks. Have them someplace in the shade, as cool and dry as possible. It's a little late in the year for harvest, so you might have some bulb splitting, which would make the garlic more fragile - if any of the bulbs open such that you can see the individual cloves, eat those ones first. The biggest concern with garlic storage is mold (and, more generally, moisture). After the bulbs/stalks have hung to dry for a few weeks, you can cut the stalks off (if you want, don't have to) and store the bulbs individually. She likes those mesh bags that onions come in - she sets up a storage area and hangs them from hooks in the wall and/or from clotheslines and clothespins. The biggest things to remember are to keep them dark, keep them dry, and keep them cool. You probably know that already, though
:) But seriously, any questions, let me know! BF's mom relies heavily on this book, calling it her "garlic bible": http://www.amazon.com/Growing-Great-Garlic-Definitive-Gardeners/dp/0963085018
