    Breeder...mill...byb?

Tell me what you think of this place: http://www.reedsbreedsbostons.com/index.html

I know someone getting a boston from them.  From my reading a few things jumped out at me, but I want to hear what you guys think.  Thanks.

Right off the bat, it bothers me that they're breeding "mahogany" (liver) dogs.

    From AKC.org

    Color and Markings
Brindle, seal, or black with white markings. Brindle is preferred ONLY if all other qualities are equal. (Note: SEAL DEFINED. Seal appears black except it has a red cast when viewed in the sun or bright light.) Disqualify: Solid black, solid brindle or solid seal without required white markings. Gray or liver colors.

Breeding dogs with disqualifying faults, or breeding dogs who lack defining breed characteristics, is an IMMEDIATE red flag, for me.

I wouldn't get one.  I don't really "classify" breeders into reputable, mill, byb, etc....just the ones I'd buy from and the ones I won't.  I don't see ANY indication of health testing, at the very least.  I'm not familiar with the breed so I don't know what other titles to be looking for.  Captions like "my muffin angel" don't really do it for me.

It doesn't appear they show or do any performance activities. No health titles listed. They seem to breed mainly "in house" (to dogs they have at home)...that to me says they're just breeding to get pups, rather than finding a male that compliments their females.

I always find it shifty when breeders press the NuVet on people like it's a miracle cure all...raises flags to me as well.

Ditto to what everyone else said, plus I'm not a big fan of the "Check out our available puppies!" banner on the bottom of the home page.  If I were looking for a Boston, I would not be getting one from them.

They accept Paypal. Just saw that. 'Nuff said.

This. They seem like they might produce some decent pets...but the 8 weeks things bothers me, the liver thing bothers me, and you really never can tell what is going on behind the photos on a website. They do seem to truly love their dogs, but why are they breeding them?!

     Money.

This person I work with works with dogs, has volunteered in a shelter, and I've offered her suggestions on better places to get her dog.  She was originally deciding between a dachshund, pug, boston, and something else. Both shelters near us have a pug (8 years) and a dachshund (7 months) in them.  I just can't believe she is going to spend $700.00 for a dog when there are two right near us who need homes.  I tried to give her advice and even suggested rescues, but I guess you can't help some people...

I can understand wanting to buy a dog over rescuing for certain reasons. But, ya this breeder sits wrong with me for all the reasons stated above.

I can understand wanting a pup from a breeder who health tests, socializes, etc (not that there are not healthy, well mannered dogs in shelters of course), but this breeder doesn't appear to health test. So, the health issues are just as unknown from these pups as one from a shelter

The thing that screamed at me (aside from what everyone else said) - when they place at 8 weeks (which is danged young) they ALREADY HAVE HAD ****TWO**** sets of vaccines.

That's just nuts. And they use Revolution -- let's put a ton of chemicals in their bodies early -- and it's tied in a big way to seizures and that's always a boston caution.  UGH

I agree. I'm hesitant to use undefinable labels, especially on people I don't really know anything about but looking at this website, not what I'd be looking for personally.

I'm not sure how Paypal is any worse than accepting any other form of payment for puppies.

Oh, nothing wrong with buying from a breeder.  I just knew she didn't really know what to look for in a breeder.  She is also only 20 years old with a fiance who is also 20 and I just feel like this is going to go bad places.  I don't think she will give up on the dog, however if it does have some serious health issues I don't know how she will deal with them...they don't make tons of money AND they are planning a wedding.

The very first thing that popped out at me was this:  Retired from what?

"...Little T, the one and only pup from Midge's last litter, is 15 yrs
young now. He is retired but still quite an active little man...."
