What should Meg wear tomorrow?!

    What should Meg wear tomorrow?!

Tomorrow is a BIG, big day for me! It's my first day as a 'junior teaching intern'!! Hooray! But, unfortunately, I'm not assigned to a class yet - when I get there tomorrow they'll decide where I'll be. So, I haven't met my teacher yet, and I also don't know what age group I'll be in.

I put together two outfits, and I need help. Badly. I am a jeans and tshirt kind of gal. I own work flip flops, and dress flip flops. I am basically incapable of dressing myself.

So, without further ado (and please excuse the photography attempts!)

Outfit #1 -- white skirt, green 'blouse', brown cardigan, brown flats.

Outfit #2 -- black slacks, pink and white striped shirt, black flats.

So, which do you ladies think will make a better first impression? Help!!

Number 2 - more versatile and looks more professional imo, especially since you don't know what age range you'll be with.

Agreed. When in doubt, always wear the pants! LOL

I agree...second outfit.  Once you see what others are wearing, you'll get a better feel for your own look going forward.  Good luck on the first day!

Thanks ladies! I was thinking pants too - can't go wrong with black slacks, right?

Hmmm, I don't really agree. I think that the skirt and cardigan look more professional for a first impression, especially for a teaching job. The pants and shirt are more for a dig in and get dirty kind of day, not a first day - first impression kind of thing. That's just my 2 cents though. Go with your gut and it's important to be comfortable in what you are wearing

Teachers here usually wear skirts...the women LOL! Fridays are casual tho. Mind you it's stifling here early in the school year so skirts are actually a lot cooler, too. But, it IS white. I mean you are ASKING to sit on something or start your monthly early in that color...if I may be so coarse? LOL!!

I would do the first outfit were it me. If you end up with an older lady you probably will have a raised eyebrow at the pants. Older teacher ladies seem pretty old school to me.

Also the general rule of thumb is..."if one outfit is uncomfortable it is likely the right choice because most things considered professional and tailored and appropriate, are uncomfortable."

K-6 skirt, 7-12 pants. To me a skirt seems friendly but pants project power.

I guess my answer might change if you were for sure not going to be working with kids in 4th grade or under - any age range where you might have to crouch down to interact would make a skirt a bad idea in my eyes.

That was my thought too. Also, the first outfit looks a little "school marm"y, if that makes sense? Kind of modest, old-school? The second outfit looks hipper and a little more "professional." When I was working in a high school, I tried to dress a little "frumpy" because it made me look older and very conservative, which is DEFINITELY what I was trying to convey around the high school kids. Those boys can be... well, teenaged boys! I wanted to make sure I wasn't the "cute young teacher," know what I mean? :-p

While I really like the look of the first outfit, A, the skirt is white and B, the skirt is WHITE and you don't know what age group you'll be working with and white is not neccessarily a great choice with the finger painting set.

I would go with the first outfit for the first day. Then, you can go from there based on what the teachers in the school wear. (As I tell my student teachers, you have a 4 month interview during your student teaching semester--make a really good first impression and work to continue making that impression every day you are at the school.) I wouldn't worry about white on the first day. (Well, I would--but I'm notorious for spilling!) The second outfit is nice but might be consider too casual in some schools.

    ETA: Good luck!!!!

I vote for the second one.  My mom teaches, and I've volunteered in her classes.  Kids are messy.  White would worry me.

And, ime, I don't think I've seen any of the teachers there in skirts often.  Pretty rarely actually.

    I vote for outfit #2!

Oh jeeze. Couldn't you all agree?! :P I'm in a k-5 school, so it won't be higher than 5th grade at least! I'm not worried about white. Or at least I wasn't...thanks guys! LOL. I'll try them both on for FH when he gets home, I guess.
