What should Meg wear tomorrow?!

I like outfit #2 for the safety of pants, at least until you know what your job will entail. But honestly I think they both look nice! I think you will be appropriately dressed either way!

I think either is fine. I like outfit #1 better, though I personally would wear something closer to outfit #2 because I don't wear skirts. If I were going to a high school, I would definitely wear outfit #2. Whatever was said about the power thing, I agree. #1 is more cute looking to me. I'm also thinking, do you know about what the temps will be like in the school you are going to? If you don't know, layers are recommended until you do. This also allows you to modify how professional/casual you are based on what you see on other people as well. I have been in some places where I drip sweat, and I worked in a school where I always wore 2-3 layers of shirts (due to a behavioral issue) and a jacket comfortably.

Any chance we can see the pants from #2 with the green top from #1? Do you have a jacket that would make that work?

Griff, that's a good idea. A black jacket? I have a green corduroy blazer, but it's still high 90's here so even inside it'd be hot...

I, too vote for the second one.  As a teacher, I am much more comfortable in pants, especially when with the younger grades where you may be sitting on a chair and the kids are sitting at your feet (you certainly don't want to have to worry about kids looking up your skirt!)  Also, I tend to like to sit on the floor at times as well, so skirts don't make that easy.  I will wear skirts occasionally, however pants just make the whole day easier.

I would vote for #2 IF you had a jacket or something to dress it up with. too casual for a first day - I mean, that is the definition of business casual - slacks and a dress shirt

They're both nice, but I vote for #2. Black pants and white top/blouse is always my "go to" outfit for interviews and typically the first day of work, because it's neutral and professional. Once you're there you can see how everyone else dresses and go from there. Good luck!!

Do the schools there have A/C? Here, A/C is hit or miss, and when they have it, how well controlled it is is also questionable. If you will have A/C in your location, or you don't know, I think a removable layer is a must. If you are certain it doesn't have it, #1- I'm sorry, #2- dress accordingly.

Being an old fart, my first thot was "wear the skirt".  But, it is white.  With a jacket, however, the slacks would look very professional.

For me, I think I would skip the jacket, or at least be prepared to take it off very soon. Since these are little kids, so you even though you want to look professional, you don't want to look too corporate/scary either! From my experiences in schools, a dress shirt and slacks/skirt was the most formal anyone dressed in the HS, and teachers of younger grades seemed to dress even more casually. Only the administrators/visitors wore suits and jackets. It could very well be a regional thing, though. And better to over dress than under dress, and all that. Anyway, best of luck!! :)

I wasn't thinking suit jacket when I said jacket. I meant like the one you have with the skirt, a cardigan, something like that. I look like a fool in a cardigan though. I see on face book though that you went with the skirt.

I've been the phone girl tonight *grin* -- and what she didn't say was that she wasn't sure if she's gonna be in kindergartent or 5th grade (it's either/or).

As a former teacher (in FL) I wouldn't set FOOT in a kindergarden class in a WHITE skirt.  From vomit to fingerpaint-- it can happen on Day #1.  It's just aching to get baptized in something foul.  (I used to keep a spare outfit IN THE CAR just cost stuff happens....

Yeah there is air conditioning but you have to go outside with the kids for recess and to greet them and walk them to their cars/buses and again white is just a disaster.   Until you know the kids and which one is going to walk up and put his head under your skirt I'd be in slacks.

But then again,I taught in Christian school where I HAD to wear a dress no matter how impractical it was sooooooo I fought with a skirt too many times

I told Meg she is going to do FINE FINE FINE -- if you guys ever saw her you'd know she is BORN to tteach.  . She's going to do superbly tomorrow.  Even dressed in a sack she'd do FINE!!!!

I'd go with the second one.  My husband is a teacher and in all of the times I've had to go to the school (he forgets things sometimes and I need run them to him) I've only seen one teacher in a skirt..and she was like 60.

@Cita- That's interesting because my girl friends and I always found it easier to bond with/talk to the teachers who seemed younger and dressed more like we would if/when we had to wear professional dress.

Darn it. This thread would have been way more fun if there hadn't been stipulations and 2 specific outfits to choose from...
