    Baby is kicking my butt

I need been there, done that advice from all the moms out there.  At 12 weeks along, this baby I'm growing is really taking me down.  I can't seem to eat anything that sustains me, I've started puking more, I don't want food but know that I must eat.  I desperately wanted to stay home from work today but our tiny department is temporarily losing a very vital team member for six weeks and I can't be spared.  It took all I had to get to work and I promptly threw up the sad little waffle and milk I could choke down for breakfast.  I was in tears, wanting so badly for this sick feeling to finally pass.  What should I do?  What can I try?  Is it time to turn to nausea drugs?  I feel like I can't function and that my wee little one is going to starve.

    they do have drugs yes.

First thing I would do? If you are taking prenatal vitamins...stop...and take Flinstone vitamins instead...those vitamins cause a lot of women to be nauseous...and if Flintstones is what you can handle then it's better than none! Give it a couple days and see if it helps...if it DOES help, tell your doc that your vitamins were making your nausea BAD and you want some different ones now please.

Secondly...peppermint is your friend. Starlite mints got me thru many a morning sickness bout...for others is it ginger...gingerale (ACTUAL ginger ale not articifical) or candied ginger. Peppermint tea helps others.

Small constant eating...goldfish crackers, oyster crackers. m & m's, or jelly beans, in constant supply. At this stage worry less about what you are eating and let your body guide you.

Some vegetarians want meat...some meat eaters cringe at the sight or smell of meat and can eat only veggies. My thing on baby one, was potatoes...I lived on baked potatoes.

If smells trigger your nausea consider putting a bowl of potpourri you CAN stand, in your area at work to block out some of the scent. I even put Vicks under my nose at times because THAT smelled better than people's B.O.

I am sure other's will have advice but there's mine!

I'm sorry you aren't feeling well Amy.  I was very lucky, no morning sickness.  The closest I came to vomiting was upon trying to eat spaghetti with sauce, which I dearly love, but couldn't stomach the smell of, for my whole pregnancy.

I agree with Gina, talk to your doctor.

Just a note about teas --

Often plain old chamomile tea will settle the stomach

Peppermint -- but you can also go to a health store and get spearmint leaves as well -- both are used to settle the stomach.

DON'T FORGET TO ICE IT.   Yes, some folks do better with something warm in their tummy - others can't tolerate the thot ot it.

But all three of those can be done ahead and stored in the refrigerator.  If you don't have a fridge at work make the tea pretty strong and put a little in a disposable water bottle and FREEZE it.  Then add plain filtered water to it later.  (I'm just fussy -- I have a filter pitcher I keep at my desk so I have it at my fingertips.

My boss drinks bottled water all the time -- but for me the thot of how many hands have been on that bottle top?  I'd rather wash my own glass and drink filtered water LOL.

Experiment tho - if you usually take sugar in stuff, try it without -- or vs. ... and see which works better for you now.

I am so sorry!!!  I commiserate! The first 20 weeks of both pregnancies for me was dizzingly nauseating.  Everything smelled like dumpster to me.  Noah I lived on potatoes too, and Evoli it was pbj's.  Other than that everything made me barf.

Peppermints are good, saltines helped me too, right by the bedside in the mornings beore I even got up I would eat a couple.  About 20 weeks along I started to pull out of it and felt human again.  I felt exhausted that first trimester. I could nap a couple hours during the day and be ready for bed by 8pm and sleep till 10 if I could!

    Feel better!

What Gina said about little meals was my saver. I stocked up on the 100 cal packs of everything. I couldn't eat anything if it LOOKED like too much, so getting a big bag of snacks and only eating a bit didn't work for me. I bought big bags of trailmix and had to pour a handful into a tiny bowl so my stomach didn't think my eyes were trying to trick me. I can't drink milk, so I didn't worry about that, but lots of people have issues. Take a couple tums a day and your calcium requirements are covered anyway.

I kept granola bars in all the cupboards because I would literally open one cupboard and see something that made me gag, like ramen noodles or peanut butter, and would have to slam that cupboard shut before I puked. Oftentimes the only cupboards I could open were the ones with dishes in them. Granted I may have been on the extreme side of nausea with Kelci, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I would eat 2 little cubes of honeydew melon and wait 20 minutes to see if they would stay down before I would try more, even if they tasted great. FORGET meat. The mere thought made me heave for most of that pregnancy. Sometimes I would get so shaky from hunger, but the idea of eating something would make me tremble. Once in a while I could park my butt in front of the tv and mindlessly much on something easy like granola or trailmix or dry cereal. Maybe popcorn or tortillas and hummus. Baby carrots made up a big part of my diet cause I could reach in the fridge and grab one or two out of the bag and I didn't have to prepare anything.

Anyway, ya, I know it can be rough. Diclectin was my friend with Kali for heartburn, which was my main issue with her. But with Kelci I didn't have much besides all day snacking to keep me going.

Peppermint altoids helps me a ton. I would suck on them right before and after I ate something. Also try snacking on bland food that has protein in it, like dry unsalted almonds. Those got me through some queasies and I could eat something a little more substantial.

I 100% agree with Gina. Stop those prenatals and see if you feel better. Even if you end up on a regular multivitamin, you can supplement with extra calclium and folic acid. There isn't anything extra special about prenatals other than increased calcium, folic acid and I think maybe slightly more iron. But I'd not supplement with iron at this point because that can cause its own tummy issues. And honestly if nothing is working then call your OB. There are medications you can take that are safe.

Also try the nausea bracelets. They're called seabands. My friend swears by them!

Also they recommend not drinking chamomile tea during pregnancy as it can slow down the baby's heartrate.

Y'all are lifesavers, thanks for all the tips.  I tried crackers, which didn't do squat for me, but I'll give them another shot.  Anything is better than nothing when you are already getting the shakes.  Part of my problem is that the thought of going to the grocery store is overwhelming and because nothing sounds good, I end up buying so very little.  And then I have a pitifully small selection of things to eat.  Like Cody said, I could have the entire store in my house and still wouldn't want anything there.  But I'm going to give it another go tonight.  A woman and her fetus can't live on Luna bars alone.

I can actually eat a few things and keep them down - cereal, mac n cheese, chicken noodle soup and those Luna bars.  Anything else is totally hit and miss.  For lunch I had a tuna sandwich with lettuce and tomato, plus some Cheetos and let me tell you, it was heaven.  Yet I couldn't stomach the plain waffle and cup of milk this morning.  Go figure.

what you list as being tolerable is actually fine. If you look at the list you have grains, dairy and protein which are all super important. Go with what your body wants...weight gain at this stage is not a huge deal as I recall...the second trimester is more about eating right etc...right now you just have to get what you need to squeak by.

I say what YOU need because even if you ate next to nothing the kid would parasitize exactly what they needed, from your bones and very organs if necessary...they are very insistent LOL. So load up on what seems right to you, that day. If grocery stores stress you out then order in or have the man shop....he needs NOW, to get used to running on errands for you anyhow. My dh did many many midnight runs for ice cream or chili or potatoes...it's their part, and the sooner they learn to play it the better!

I was very lucky and had no morning sickness with Willa, and very little with Sonja. My friend, however, had extreme morning sickness and did end up having to take a rx anti-nausea medication. She was really worried about the effects of taking it, but her lil baby ended up just fine. Good luck.

I've had zero morning sickness, but if I had, I'd have had no issue with taking meds. No sense, to me, being miserable for months when they have things to help

No advice Amy, just ((HUGS)) and I hope you feel better.

Not only that, but there is a fine line between getting enough nutrients and not getting enough, and when you're under the bar, the baby could suffer. You need to weight the options. Having a drug free pregnancy vs having an undernourished infant. I really think Kelci is so tiny because I had such a hard time eating when I was pregnant with her. She never had that round solid feel that Kali had when she was born. She looked more like a preemie, though she wasn't.

The Pre-natals made my daughter sick all 3 times.  Only found one prenatal that didnt but was after the first trimester on the 3 baby so she did switch back to them.  I lived on ice cream and cheetos for some time.  Never was really sick but those were the things that I wanted.  Smells got to me, which is why I think I was ok with cheetos and ice cream. :)  Sorry...this to shall pass!

I dunno Candace, that's an interesting thought but they gain 1/2 lbs a week or something crazy like that the last several weeks of pregnancy so seems to me that that, may be a time when it's decided if they will or won't...be a "rounded" baby. So many things go into that...stress level of the mother IMO...and her age and egg quality at the time of conception as well as the sperms quality IMO have more to do with it. Lily was a leggy twiggy baby and is a leggy twiggy young lady now...Elias was a solid heavy stout baby and is a heavy stout young man now LOL, tho both were at the "heavier" end when born one LOOKED and FELT it and the other didn't.
