kpwlee's saga of the stray dog from MC- best update possible

Well I took him to the SPCA sort of collection center if you like and had him scanned surprise no chip Sad

They also were taken by his friendly soft temperament and gave us a Vectra for fleas although he looks clean.  He is already looking to me as safe which is wonderful and sad.

They contacted a group that tries to match lost dogs with found dogs and took pictures and recorded an attempt at a breed mix so that if he goes to the county shelter they can pull him.

He is back in the crate in my garage and I feel a bit lost really.  If I take him to the county shelter he has 3 days before he would be euthanized so I am trying to find out when the SPCA goes and pulls dogs so that I can time it right.

DH is not pleased (he was hand feeding this guy before I took him to the SPCA) I think he fears one or both of us getting too attached.  This could happen as he is really sweet.  I believe he is fairly young as his coat on the sides is very soft.

so that is where we are - he is in the garage in the crate - happy as Larry.  I picked up some basic dog food as the Orjen we have is very rich.  He ate it up quickly.

Busgy is thrilled with the development despite the fact that 'Red' growls at him when he goes too close to the crate LOL

That is all for now.  I am proud of me for going and getting him and trying to save him but very fearful that it will all be for naught.

I'm proud of you too but I know it's a bittersweet kind of feeling in these situations.......

Karen, if nothing else, he will know kindness for as long as he has.  You done good.

    • Gold Top Dog

    Aww, Karen, you are wonderful!

Is there any way, if the owners aren't located, that you could try and place him yourself?  I could try and see if my SIL knows any rescue folks...she's been active in basset hound rescue in the triangle, but she might know some other rescue groups, too.

Ask him which feels heavier - the possibility of FEELing attached (and there is a difference from being attached) while trying to find him a new home, or the feeling when the last dog ended up dead.  I'm a smidge unclear if this dog def belongs to the people behind you who let the last dogs roam and get killed.  Or if this dog just happened to be in the area and it's unconfirmed if the neighbors brought him to that place or not.

Tina is right - you're giving him care and kindness in hopes of a better life.  Is he neutered?  Did the SPCA think he looked in relatively decent health?

He appears in good health, getting thin after a week on the lam.  I knocked on the door of the 'farm' and got no answer.  When they were there he remained tucked tight in the back corner of the lot near our property line.  So I went and got him.

He is intact and that will be taken care of - for now he is resting & happy.  i am going to keep him until Monday and then take him to the county facility where he will be pulled by the SPCA - that is my plan

Is that because you can't relinquish him directly to the SPCA?  I sent you a PM.

correct - they used to take dogs in but due to some politics they now can't take in animals directly so they go to the shelter and take from there.  Ridiculous -  but we seem to have been able to create a wide net so this guy will get pulled and put up for adoption.

We had him out with Bugsy and he almost played - he is still fearful and tired.  He wanted back into the crate so that is where he is, sleeping when I last checked.

I am so very proud of you too Karen!  Very nice job in catching him and keeping him safe.  I agree....you done good.

Oh Karen, what you did today was wonderful!!!

He probably feels a sense of safety and quiet that he hasn't felt in a long time...probably hasn't slept well in a long time either.

    {{{{HUGS}}}}  You are amazing!

I just took him for a little walk and when i approached the crate his tail started wagging Big Smile

He was so timid on the walk - a new experience for me LOL - but if I stroked him he would get a spring in his step for a bit then slow down again so I would stroke him and he got all energized again - cute.

When we got back to my drive he hustled up it to his crate - then he looked at me for more kibble.

I feel relieved, concerned and hopeful all at the same time.

I've never done something like this before but after the experience of the black lab mix that was dead at the side of the road 4th of July weekend and seeing many angels on here I felt a deep desire to try to do something.

Fingers crossed it works out for him

Karen, thank you so much for helping this boy!

That's so much better than that horrible, hollow feeling of helplessness that you were feeling before and with the black dog.  He has a chance now and he didn't have much to look forward to before you stepped in.  I'm so proud to call you my friend. :)

I got a tear or two at the thought of his relief at seeing "his" crate and rushing toward the only safety he's known in who knows how long.

    Good on you !!

Poor "Red".  Sounds like he's been scared and hungry for a while.  He must feel so relieved to have a quite comfy place to sleep and food in his belly.  Stories like this always make me soooooo curious to know what really did.happen.

Thanks for helping him. That's cute that he loves his safe crate.
