So angry

    So angry

I am angry at an irresponsible dog owner. My 15 year old daughter went outside to take care of her rabbits and there was a husky in the yard. We live on a main road so not a huge shock. She comes in and gets me, we all go outside. we saw the dog had tags so we were going to catch it and call the owners. Well then we looked at our hutches and, the dog had ripped the bottom out of two cages and took the rabbits and was working on the third. It bolts, i call animal control. we go to try and find the dog. Animal control in the next town catches it.

I had to tell my 7 year old that both of her rabbits were gone. That was so hard seeing her cry and be that upset. The lady got her dog back and is refusing to pay us back for the rabbits, we couldnt find remains but we dont know how long the dog was in our yard for. It only lives like a street away and had been out since 8:30am, we found the dog in our yard at 5:00pm.So now I have to prove it was her dog.Animal control informed her that if the dog comes back on my property I have every legal right to shoot it. We have most of our rabbits in a fenced in area but had just moved rabbits into this cage temporarily and were going to be moving the fence.

So now I get to decide if I will take her to small claims court. I probably will just on principle. I want her to know that this isnt acceptable , she told animal control the dog gets out frequently, she has no fence and no tie out from what i could see.

Oh, I'm so sorry. That's awful. Hopefully the husky's owner will calm down and change her mind about repaying you. Run free, bunnies, and ((hugs)) for your family.

I'm very sorry about your rabbits. Its too bad that the owner will not reimburse you. I will say though thay huskies are escape artists and are hard to contain. My husky could open my sliding glass door and let herslf out. She jumped through 2 nd story windows and off the roof. I can't even tell you how many times she escaped over her 15.5 yrs despite my best efforts. Whenever she escaped I knew where to find her: either at a lake swimming or at some ones back yard rabbit hutch. Huskies are big time predators, especially of small prey like rabbits. Does your yard have a fence to keep animals like that out? You may want to consider that in the future. Again, I'm sorry about your bunnies and its a bummer that the owner of the husky is not taking on the responsibility for the damages that her dog caused.

Oh the poor bunnies, I am so sorry!

I hope the husky's owner 1. pays up and 2. does something about her roaming pooch.

Sorry about the bunnies.  Sorry that the dogs owner won't take responsibility.  The dog will be back.  It had a successful hunt in your yard.  Be ready with a camera or a gun, your choice apparently.  But you need proof that it was her dog that got the bunnies.  If it ate everything, you have no proof that the dog even killed them.  A camera and a way to catch the dog-if it won't bite you.  Maybe see if you can borrow a live trap big enough for the dog.

I'm sorry about your rabbits. We've owned many rabbits, they're neat little pets. There are many predators out there, and rabbits are primo prey, you may want to fence your property to keep them out.

Would you really shoot the dog if it came onto your property?? IDK why but when people post that sort of thing on this forum it really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Your legal right it may be, but how would you explain a large dead dog, blood everywhere, on your property to your children? If I were a child that would scare the you-know-what out of me more than anything. Blech.

I would really shoot a large dog on my property, if it was threatening my pets, repeatedly. There won't be blood everywhere, if you know where to shoot. The owner can come deal with the body.

I have had good luck with calling animal control, though, so haven't been pushed that far.

If I had the opportunity to shoot the coyote that took my girls BEFORE it took them to save them I sure as he&& would have. Seeing our personal pets torn to shreds probably scarred my kids, more than a pop into a coyote with a quick disposal would have.

Is the above different because one is wild and the other not? To me...personal opinion only...that'd be a bit hypocritical.

To each their own but having held a shredded, bleeding hound in my arms and had my children see THAT...I am not really agreeing on the "scarred child" thing.

Jennie, most people don't know where to shoot to get a deadly shot without causing a big mess, also add in the heat of the moment of your pet being attacked. Gina, I personally do think the coyote attack is different.

IDK, maybe it's because of where I'm from; I'm pretty sure it's illegal to shoot in the vicinity of the public and I live in a very crowded suburb... I couldn't even imagine it. But, to each his or her own.

I don't live in a very crowded suburb, and have been told that I can shoot them, if need be. Animal Services euthanized the ones that were the big problem, and tried to tear down my fence to kill my dogs.

To be honest I dont want to shoot the dog but if it is attacking my animals I will do what I need to do to protect them. In this situation my animals and family come first.

If the owner had even said sorry I would be more understanding. She has no fence or dog pen , I wish she did because again i would be more understanding. most of my rabbit hutches are in a fenced in area we had moved these guys because we were expanding the fence.

Unfortunatly I know the dog will be back. I am just hoping it stays away from our goats. So what we did is put a stuffed animal in the rabbit hutch that one of the rabbits had layed on to make sure it goes there first. All I have to do is see her dog because we saw the dog trying to ge the third rabbit out of the cage. Right now she is being cautious though. Live trap is a good idea, hadnt thought of that.

I saw my dog being mauled by an other dog and if I would've had a gun I would've shot it. Seeing that is the worst and most helpless feeling ever.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the support/comments. No i do not want to shoot the dog but will if needed. The owner admitted that the dog has been out repeatedly and she has done nothing to contain the dog. I feel bad that i know the dog is only doing what comes naturally but if the owner doesnt contain it then it is on her what happens. I will not fence in my yard to keep her dog out. I will finish the pen extension for our buns, and make sure that none of them are outside it again. Beyond that it is all up to the husky owner. The rabbits were my daughters show rabbits and will be about $50-$75 each to replace, plus the replacement of the ruined cages, I will go to small claims court. I know it will cost to do that but she needs to do the right thing.
