So angry

I'm sorry about your daughter's rabbits.

As usual, it's the animals that suffer from human error.

I know it's probably too late now, but a vet could make the dog vomit up the contents of its stomach.  If there is rabbit in it, you have your case.

    RIP, little bunnies.Crying

I agree with shooting the dog if it was attacking your pets again.  And Gina, I'm terribly sorry your kids and you had to go through that Sad

With most people, even threatening taking them to court will make them jump and do what is necessary to avoid it.  I say, take them to judge judy!!!  In all honesty, when I see the TV program, she is very much into animal rights and whatnot.

But I hope things work out for you.  Maybe send her a demand letter putting her on notice that should she not repay you $X, then you will be forwarding her court papers.  Keep a log of all times you see the dog on your property, or even see the dog running about

I would love to do that but the owner wont let anyone see the dog never mind have a vet do anything

My step son said I should take her on Judge Judy too .I am hoping once she has some time to think about things, she will do the right thing without me having to take her to court. I am also hoping she will put a fence of some kind up.

Honestly, I don't think after time she will automatically think to do the right thing.  You should maybe send her a letter telling her that if she doesn't repay you x amount of money within the next ten days (have a clear deadline) you will be serving her with court papers and then can let the court decide, and that you will seek your court costs against her.  Which means, if you get awarded costs, she will have to also pay the amount of money you spent bringing her to court.

Any reasonable person would reimburse you without even having to ask, or at the very least, apologize for what happened.  Considering she has done neither, I wouldn't count on her coming to the realization of her mistakes on her own

and Gina, again, I am soo incredibly sorry for what you and your family went through with the girls. I can't even imagine what that would have been like.

FWIW, I would shoot an animal if it was attacking my pets, no question. I'm sure the kids have a lot more feeling towards their pet than they do towards a strange animal attacking them.

Where I live, in farm country, it's just a given that if your dog ecapes and kills farmers livestock, chicken, etc., the dog will be shot. Needless to say, I am VERY careful with my dogs.

I'm not on here as often has I have been in the past.. but came across this and thought i'd add a suggestion that nobody else has mentioned yet.

Have you considered buying a paintball gun? Those things will hurt like a bugger from close range (possibly enough to discourage the dog from entering your property again), and the owner will DEFINITELY know their dog was somewhere unwanted when it comes home with giant red & yellow splatters on it.

Just a thought - it's not enough to kill the dog, but definitely enough to bruise it. And your message will be painted all over the dog :)

Owners of small pets have a duty not to leave them with inadequate protection against predators and owners of predatory pets have an obligation to keep them contained so that they don't access the small pets.  Shooting the predators is not the answer to a human problem.

I do not own a gun and am not a fan in general. That said, if an animal were in my yard, attacking my pets, I'd do what I had to to protect them.  We have to watch Newt carefully as, being 4 lbs, some animals..even dogs..seem to view her as prey and show way too much interest.

Yup, I hate to say it but Apollo is like this with a 2-3# Chi that lives across the street from my Mom. He really does look at that dog like it's prey (same way he looks at a squirrel). So, we are vigilant about keeping him away from that Chi (it isn't outside very often anyways, I've only seen it a dozen times in 3 years).

Very well put. Thank you for stating that.

I agree and was alluding to that in my earlier post but was a bit too subtle.   I think the woman should reimburse the OP for the rabbits but I also think the OP should house the rabbits where predators of any sort can't get to them.

Oh gosh that poor little girl! How upsetting for her :-( I hope she is doing ok. I can't believe the owner us being so brazen about it. I'd be mortified if my dog did something like that!
