What breed can't swim?

    What breed can't swim?

What breed of dog can not swim.  Not "won't" swim, I have one of those, but can't.

I've heard that many bully breeds sink--I believe a lot of that has to due with how dense their muscle is.  IDK if Sally can swim, she's only been in water up to her tummy.

Daisy cannot swim for the life of her. (which really scares me if she would ever fall in the pool- we do have a fence around it and she couldn't get to it from the backyard, but still.) Her front end works, but her back end sinks. It's like she's swimming vertically.

Most overbalanced or ungainly breeds have trouble with water. Bassetts (not sure on this one?) Pekes, Shitz tzu's...Bulldogs...where the front end is much bigger than the back, or the leg size doesn't match the body size as well. As mentioned bully breeds can have issues but not sure if  that's also the BIGGER ones or just the smaller....

I'd wager there are exceptions in all the breeds tho

I would venture to say all breeds can swim, but some don't like too for whatever reason. I think it is a personal pref from one dog to another. Both of my Shih Tzu's swim and love the water.
My pitty on the other hand, does NOT like water, other than to drink.

Sally has slowly warmed to the idea of water.  She still dislikes baths, but when I first got her she wouldn't even walk through a small puddle, now she's gotten braver and will go belly deep--as long as it does not remotely resemble a bath....

I think Ive hard basset hounds cant swim... but Im sure in any breed that are unlikely swimmers you will find those who can.

April did not like the little pool I got her one year, but loved walking at the edge of the lake when we were fishing, also loves the little stream to wade in that runs through the town park.  Ugh she gets filthy from that stream though.

My parents Dobe nearly drowned when he jumped off the boat to catch the fish in the lake.  He couldn't swim - too top heavy, thin legs.  My step-father jumped in after him, swam to a nearby island (with the dog trying to climb up on top of his shoulder the entire time), then went back to retrieve the boat.

The dog now has a life vest with a handle on the back - so they can pluck him out of the water.

I have never seen a Dobe actually swim in water above their head.  Doesn't mean it doesn't happen, but I've never seen it.  Maybe mrv knows?  Had Dobes for almost 20 years...

I have a neighbor who breeds chows and she told me that they can't swim because their coats get so heavy when they get wet and it just pulls them down. Chow owners??

I'm shocked, I thought all dogs could swim. I mean, if they had to. I know some wont, but I didn't know some couldn't.

Boomer sank straight to the bottom the first time I let go of him in the pool. Scared the crap out of me and that#%92s probably why he#%92s so terrified of it now. Now he will swim but he#%92s not comfortable with it and it looks like he has to work unusually hard at it.

I am actually asking because of a trivia question at my favorite dog store.  I had once heard that it was boxers and that's what I put down as my answer and wanted to know if anyone knew.

I have heard that there are a number of breeds that don't particularly like to swim, but that's not what I am looking for.  Nigel is part pit and he LOVES to swim, so not sure that the pit thing is a can't, but more of a won't.

The bulldog and basset hound are good guesses, but I am not sure.  Anyone know for sure??

No, most Bassets can't swim because of their deep chest.  They sink...although there was one girl on here whose Basset did swim.  Our rescue group is very hesitant to adopt to someone with a pool, and they insist on having a fence arould it.

I've also heard that chows can't swim. Something about their legs. Lori?
