What breed can't swim?

I thought the answer was Shar pei's?

MRV's first dobeman, Morgan La Fae CDX was a lab in a dobe suit.  If I still had her, she would be competitive in Dock Dogs.  She would go off the diving board in my parents pool when we went to visit.  She started her swimmnig career unexpectedly.  She was about 10-12 weeks old.  We lived near OSU (columbus) at the time and were walking down by Mirror Lake.  The one section had water level and ground level just about equal.  She walked past the stone, sunk straight down about 14" or so.  I reached in hauled her out and was scared to death.  She followed us further down and splashed into the shallow end and it started.  She loved the water.  Would out swim every thing at Mirror Lake expect one GSP who was just as driven and athletic as she.  She would bet the labs and goldens to any thing thrown out into the water.  Her most fun was to jump from a height and make a big splash.  I need to get those pics scanned and loaded on my website.

I wonder about Pugs and Frenchies...

I saw a trivia site that said it's Bassett's that cannot swim.  Makes sense to me.  Another said Dingos.
I've seen plenty of boxers swim.

    I knew you would know!!!
Yay!  There's hope for Gracie!  We'll have to try a bit harder at the indoor pool, then.  [:D]

I've read that any pug faced dog should not go into the water they can drown, but I will have to look it up to be specific, I know pug was one, because  I emailed it to my  sister-in-law and niece.

My friend's mom had a doxie that could not swim.  She tried to make her swim once by taking her out over her head and putting her down.  Buttons sunk to the bottom and walked to shore.

I am actually asking because of a trivia question at my favorite dog store.  I had once heard that it was boxers and that's what I put down as my answer and wanted to know if anyone knew.

I have heard that there are a number of breeds that don't particularly like to swim, but that's not what I am looking for.  Nigel is part pit and he LOVES to swim, so not sure that the pit thing is a can't, but more of a won't.

The bulldog and basset hound are good guesses, but I am not sure.  Anyone know for sure??

Lol, they aren't guesses, there's more than one breed that can't swim. Bulldogs and Frenchies both will sink like rocks.

Teenie can swim! She doesn't, voluntarily, but when I got her, I don't think she knew about stuff. She walked right off of the edge of the pond and swam back out.

I've been told that pugs absolutely cannot swim. Flat faces and barrel bodies just don't go with water, I guess.

I always heard that you shouldn't let pugs swim because they can sink and also just drowned because of their faces.  My mom said she can't keep her pug out of the pool they have.  Mine will only sit in a small kiddie pool when he gets hot though.

I have a friend who has Boxers and she told me that she heard that Boxers are the only breed that CAN'T swim.  Not sure if it is true, but that's what I heard.

ROFLMBO.  I was just reading through this, hardly able to contain my response till I got to the end.  Imagine my surprise when I was almost there and found that I had already responded to this thread... Its so funny when people drag these things out of the archives...

I've seen a basset swim. Also seen a frenchie sink like a rock and walk along the bottom in confusion until someone rescued her.

Here's my guess, a weiner dog.  I would think they couldn't swim on account of their small legs and density and long back.  Some people we talk to around here are surprised Misty likes the water so much.  We're always in awe of these people, like why wouldn't she?    I would imagine too, maybe pitbulls, but someone can surely correct me on that one.  I'm figuring on account of their build.  Built like a rock!  LOL
