"Different" Kitchen Staples What's In Your Fridge - mrstjohnson

OK - here is a weird poll with a short story to preceed it.  My sister was over this afternoon and she was looking in my fridge for something to eat.  She was shocked at the things we had and to me they are staples that I get every week.  She doesn't cook much and when she does it is pretty much the basic grilled chicken and rice a roni (which I love BTW).

So, I was wondering what "different" things your family has to have.  Here are ours:

    Hummus

    Goat Cheese

    Avocados

    Poblano and Jalapeno Peppers

    Capers

Buttermilk (I make my own salad dressings)

    Blue and Feta Cheeses

Different kinds of olives from the olive bar

    Homemade roasted red peppers

Chick peas (we literally go through 2 - 3 cans a week)

At least three or four kinds of fresh fruit (star, kiwi, bananas, mangos, blueberries)

I think back to my mom's fridge when we were little and she never had any of these things.  I don't know if its because she didn't like them or they just weren't available.

    So, what's in your fridge?

    • Gold Top Dog

Not getting up to look, so I'm going to go from memory of what is typically there

Hummus is a recent addition to my staples

    baby carrots

    some type of salad dressing

    milk and orange juice

    always grape jelly, often strawberry

    Ketchup

And I realize now I really remember very much of what's in there.

    Dear Mrstjohnson,

I would like to come live with you forever and ever.

    Love always,

    aDork... (and aMutt)

Since I'm at school right now, here's what's in my fridge/freezer:

    -Sunny D

-Cheese Stick (I ate all the others)

    -1 Ensure (refridgerate 1 at a time)

    - sometimes a glass bottle coke, sometimes a grape Nehi (but never glass bottle Cheerwine)

    -2 sticks of butter

-my roommates juices, and Jell-o Chocolate Mousse

Freezer: 5 Brown Cows, a million Ice Pops.

I forgot that we have butter, or rather, I can't believe it's not butter.

These are the things that are always in the fridge.  They aren't weird to me, but some people think that they are different.

    • Mushrooms (marinade, to sautee them in, is frozen in an ice cube tray so that we can make "just a few" at a time)
    • Jalapenos, cream cheese, & bacon (everyone in the house makes their own as snacks)
    • Cream cheese
    • BBQ sauce
    • Chocolate chip cookie dough, that is never baked into cookies
    • Capri Sun
    • Soy Milk
    • Egg Beaters
    • Grapes
    • Salsa
    • Leftover Chinese takeout
    • Dog food.  It has to defrost somewhere.
    • A bottle of prune juice.  It's made of colored glass, & when I saw it, I had to have it.  It has Tequila Rose in it, & because of the label on the bottle, the kids will never touch it! Big Smile

You are talking to a weirdo with special dietary needs, so there may be a lot here you wouldn't see in everyone else's fridge, PLUS I feed teenagers!

    3 containers hummus

    rice milk

    nonfat milk

    several dozen eggs

    roasted turkey lunch meat

    margarine

    ICBINB spray

    lots of salad dressings

    baby carrots

    celery

    cucumbers

    sprouts

     extra lite mayo

    peppers

plus various jams, jellies and other condiments

I don't think we really have "staples" - it's whatever we are feeling for that particular month/week.  FH used to be a cook, so he loves experimenting.  If we are into Mexican/Japanese/Thai/Indian, etc., the fridge will have corresponding ingredients.

I guess maybe it's strange that we rarely have milk that's not expired,  We don't drink milk often, and although I clean the fridge about once a week, somehow the milk always gets missed.

Other staples that you would most likely find are:

    - yogurt

    - brie

    - goat cheese

    - cheddar (5 yr old)

    - beer

    - some sort of vodka cooler

    - broccoli

    - tons of fresh veg and fruit

    - dandelion

I think that's all of the usual staples I can think of.  My cupboard always has coconut milk - that's a definate staple!

    • Gold Top Dog

    staples? hmm..

    Juice bags, gotta have em.

Pitcher of Kool Aid (hood for life, baby!)

    yogurt of some form

    fruit

    cheese sticks

    beer

    milk

    eggs

    butter

anything else can change...and of course the freezer is where all the good stuff is! meats and veggies etc.

btw: anyone else hearing that Imagination Movers song "What's In Your Fridge"??

    • Gold Top Dog

I eat a lot of different fruits, not the usual banana, orange, apple - mango, star fruit, passion fruit, grape fruit, pineapple, berries.

We always have milk, butter, and pickles!
