"Froggy Style"?

    "Froggy Style"?

This is kind of a goofy question and there's probably no single conclusive answer to it, but I've been wondering, why do some dogs sit or lay "froggy style" with bellies on the ground and back legs splayed out behind them and others never do?  ;Pofi does this ALL the time, but Mia never does and neither did our Lab, Jesse.  I've seen big dogs and small dogs, male and female do this, but when Pofi laid down like this at dog park a few weeks ago and I asked severa other owners, NONE of their dogs ever do and they thought Pofi must be double jointed!

Kelly posted a great shot of Boomer with his legs stretched out behind him and Pofi and his cosmic twin, Grrrady are both shown in the pose in siggy pics.

Any theories?  Forensic evidence?  Wild guesses?  Do your dogs sit/lay froggy style??

Don't have a clue, but I can't wait to hear the theories on this. Boomer is always like that - the other two never are.

Maybe it has to do with hip laxity or musculature.  Probably a scientific reason --  or maybe it's because some like it and some don't!![&:]  My Collies don't but my Westie does.

In the old days people used to say that was a sign of hip problems, but I've had OFA Excellent dogs that frogged out, so I'm leaning towards musculature/structure.  IME the longer the legs, the less they frog.  Let's see if there is any correlation there.  Any tall dogs out there who frog??

Unrelated question, but I'm dying to know.  What is Pofi?
He is so cute, all legs.  There is a sleddog group on Petfinder that
has Saluki/Husky mixes but no pictures.  What's your guess?

I LOVE that second picture of Boomer - so serious with that Hide-A-Squirrel in his mouth...

LOL- Colliewog! Pofi definitely likes it!  But I think of him as a pretty tall dog - he's 70 lbs and standing on his back legs he's at least a bit taller then me at 5'5"... here's a shot of him standing in profile

And Boomer's pretty leggy, lanky, too.

Red Devil* - thanks for the compliments on my boy.  So many theories on his "lineage" (he was dumped in a park at 5 weeks) - but questions about sight hounds come up a lot.  A woman in the neighborhood tells me every time she sees us that she's sure he's part Saluki. He flies like a sighthound - always the fastest dog at the park.  And he looks easy and graceful - these long strides.   He also herds. So I think part herding breed.  When he was smaller, I thought (and so did some other folks) Kelpie! But my DH swears he's part Husky.

Long story short - I do think some sighthound and some herding breed and Husky to boot.  I think a Husky Saluki cross would stand a good chance of looking a lot like Pofi!

Blue use to lay like that when he was a puppy and now days he wont even do it. Eli loves to lay like that all day long if he could.

    Weird animals.

Boomer is very leggy and lean, at 7 months he passed my rottweiler in height and he's still just under 50 lbs.

FWIW my mom's golden and her dachshund do it.

Gypsy does this too.  We call it Frog Dog.  FWIW, my vet told me this is a GOOD thing as dogs that have dysplaysia won't do this as it hurts their hips.

Pocket does it too!  She also crawls along the ground like that- does Pofi/Boomer do that as well? She's also quite leggy, though she's still young... my friend's jack russell does the froggy thing too.
Have no idea why they do it - maybe they just like stretching out those muscles?

Here's some more evidence for the froggy-file... [:)]

OK, that blows *that* theory!  lol  I didn't realize Pofi was that big of a dog!!  It's gotta be personal preference ...[:D]

Whotta handsome pup, he's a charmer, huh.  Here's my guess about frog-dog postures:  I think Colliewog is on the right track about the flexibility in the hips.  The reasoning won't matter if a dog simply can't bend that way.  My first guess is that dogs can stretch most of their body out, relieving kinks, improving circulation, lengthening the back, and filling the lungs to their fullest capacity.  (You can't really fill your lungs curled up like a pill bug).  My second guess would be for simply cooling down.  Ever see a Polar bear splayed out on ice?  Those bears over heat very easily and they do cool off by lieing down in the same posture.  Maybe it's a little both.  (stretching and cooling.)  I don't think it's a complicated reason whatever it is that motivates this posture, it occures in social low stress situations.  I can't picture a ticked off doggy in that position lol.  I think it's a doggy-wellness thing.  :)  Jules

Maddi does it all the time too (although I have not photographic proof yet!).

It is a sign of very good hips and knees.  At the farm where I volunteer (breed and raise great danes for service dogs), we watch our puppies to see who will frog out.  If they do that, it's a sure sign that the hips are perfect.  If they don't, it does not necessarily mean the hips are bad, it may just mean they don't like to lie that way.  The vet to the danes has suggested we mark down which pups will frog out, because he believes if they do, there's no reason to spend $400 on a PENN hip xray.  My adopted toy poodle frogs out, my little one, Misty does not (of course, she's got the worst knees in the world, so I wouldn't expect her to).

Sweet Pea does it to but here we call it chicken legs. Must just be a way to really stretch out.

Boomer does! It's so funny, especially since he mostly does it when I'm making him do something he doesn't want to do. He'll crawl as slow as he can.

    I love the name Pocket!!
