mindless hump day

Tina - I can sympathize with you and the finger pain. I woke 2 nights ago with my right thumb throbbing. After I got to work yesterday, I couldn't stand it and used a magnifying glass and could see a small whitish area right where the nail connects to the skin. I filed the nail as short as possible and squeezed like crazy and some pus came out. As soon as I did it, the thumb felt better. Well, I woke up last night at 1 AM and it was throbbing again, so I filed even shorter and was able to squeeze a bit more pus out and it felt a little better. I'm going to soak it in hot water with antibacterial soap off and on today and hope to clear this up. I looked it up on emedicine and it said that this type of infection rarely requires antibiotics, so I'm hoping to take care of it myself. Anyhoo, that's my wimpy, sad story.

The sun is out today - hooray!!! It's supposed to be sunny today and tomorrow and then another storm is coming in Friday. I feel so much better already though and it'll be nice to see things dry out a bit.

Liesje - I hope the mole removal goes smoothly.

luvmyswissy - congrats on the big bonus!! I'd be thrilled with even a itty bitty bonus.

Jackie - Sorry for the rough start to your day and I hope whatever it is that's upset you doesn't ruin your entire day.

So anyway, when I smelled the syrup I was making for Agnes, I went, "the slippery elm must have been the weird flavor in that natural stuff I'd bought for me."  Small world.

'Slippery elm' is almost universally used as a calm calmative, anti-inflammatory for lungs and gut generally -- I'd be astonished if it *wasn't* in natural cough syrup!

You'll see horehound too -- but that's dang nasty tasting (my mother used to try to convince me horehound candy was yummy and I never could learn to like it -- AND licorice in cough stuff.

Sometimes you'll see nervine herbs too -- valerian, passion flower, St. John's Wort because they calm spasms which can keep an asthma cough going.

Good news from the vet - Gracie's lump is absolutely a fatty tumor (phew), and they even drained the cyst-thing above her eye.  I fully expect it to come back eventually, but, at least this gives me another excuse to take piccies of her.  It's been a while.  Her tooth is an unknown quantity, but the vet said no more bones for her.  So, hmmm... turkey necks would have the same effects as beef bones, from the RMB perspective, but just easier on the teeth, right?  Turns out her vaccinations were actually all up to date!  What a moron I am - I didn't realize distemper was good for 3yrs at her age.  *shrug*

Meanwhile, I'm having a tough time concentrating because I'm worried about my friends and their Bull Terrier, Bugsy.  His mystery pain has returned, but this time it's not responding to tramadol, or morphine.  They just lost Leroy, their Schnauzer, a few months ago.  Bugsy is the shining star of the family - the puppy anxiously bred who turned out to be such a spectacular dog he was shown across the country and ended up at Westminster.  With no children, they run their lives around their dogs and love him to death.  I'm so scared to think he's in pain that isn't being touched by meds, and the vets don't know the cause.

OK, I have to go try to get G registered for a trial.... then maybe actually do some work.

Thank you, Jackie, very much.  He really is a special boy - his owner's "heart dog".  I just posted an update - she thinks his condition sounds very much like the link that Gina shared.  You have no idea how thankful I am, once again, for this forum and the exceptional people who come here every day to share experience, expertise, support, encouragement, funny stories/pics, advice and everything in between.

THANK YOU everybody, for being the crew we can count on in times of need, sorrow, joy, and anything dog (or non-dog) related!!

    Erica, have fun!

    Congrats on the bonus, Dawn!

Lies, I hope that you have a quick & easy recovery.

Paige, I'll send you a dartboard if you need one. Although, maybe a voodoo doll would be more helpful. Glad to hear that Gracie's lump was fatty! I must have missed it, what's wrong with her teeth? And hurry up with the damn pics. We don't get to see your pretty girl nearly enough! If your friend's haven't tried gabapentin on Bugsy, that might be an option. It helped Bev tremendously, when nothing else was touching his pain.

As some of you have already read, I hit a buzzard this morning on the freeway. Cher & I had matching coronaries, & Brutus slept through the entire incident. The jeep is no worse for wear, other than having to be washed.

I am in search of a nice leather collar, & a cute, funky collar for Cher. Anyone got any suggestions?

I am in search of a nice leather collar

Hogan Leather is my vendor of choice. www.hoganleather.com  The leash/collar she's wearing my avatar was a gift from there (I'm not normally a pink person... but now she has a cooling coat to match the nice collar.  *sigh*)

Sucky about the buzzard, yikes.  Each region has their roadkill "thing", eh?  NH/ME it's the moose, FL was the opossums and, really, a BUNCH of different things, our part of TX was the armadillos... ugh.  Hope you and Cher are recovered now.

Tooth was one canine that looks bruised-ish, and I wanted a second vet to look at it to see if it's diseased or damaged or what.  Said it will be a year to 18mos before they'll be able to tell for sure, but that she's chipped her back molars so they reco'd no more hard bones for her "at her age" (almost 7).  The bruised tooth appeared right after I gave her a frozen RMB for the first time in months, so, I guess they're right.  Sadface.  I wanna go home and hug on my baby, but have to work.  My parents are coming to visit this weekend, and they will be super happy to see Miss G, as I know she will be to see them.  Whenever I tell her "Nana and Pepe are coming" she perks up at "Pepe".  Recipients of her Dober-smiles are few and far btwn, but he's one.  It's been 2+ years since they've seen eachother.  Def picture-worthy if I can catch a smile.  (Meanwhile, Henry has been giving me smiles lately!  Silly boy has built a happy relationship since training w/his auntie.)

My butt is hurtin! I sat in the most uncomfortable chair today during an all day conference. Omg, that was painful!

I'm debating on whether or not to go to SAR training. It's cold and I'm feeling kind of wuss-ish. Then again, at least I wouldn't be sitting for a few hours!

my bum is hurting because I slid down the stairs last night. I should mention that they are not carpeted. There are six steps, and I think I started sliding on the second one. I remembered to tuck my chin to my chest as I went down, so at least I didn't hit my head. My butt and my arm have nice bruises though.

Henry (sister's dog) might have cancer in his nose.  Need to wait for another flare-up (since things were pretty nondescript today), then they will take a biopsy.  Oncologist couldn't definitively say by visual inspection what it might/might not be.

Same here!  My computer is so slow everytime I try to use Photoshop the darn thing freezes on me!  I think this computer was a prototype of the first computer...LOL  I'll get a siggy made someday, hopefully.

I took Tessy to the docs for a checkup today for her IMHA and all was looking good.  Her crit jumped all the way up to 42% so we celebrated with soft icecream!  Bad news is her regular doctor is leaving for another job so now I'll have to find a new one!  :(((

Paige...sorry to hear about Henry.  Prayers and healing vibes for him.
