Treadmills

    Treadmills

Ok, it's New Years and I AM resolving to get back into shape and lose about 55-60 lbs. I'm thinking of getting a treadmill. I'd be highly likely to use it and watch a movie or something at the same time Stick out tongue When I went to the gym, the treadmill was my cardio workout of choice. I currently have a variety of free weights at home and will be picking up a simple bench that folds up to use with the free weights.

My issues with getting a treadmill are two fold. 1. Space. I live in a condo with NO storage space period. Something that can fold up when not in use to be relatively out of the way is key. Otherwise it'll take up the whole of the living room (where it's going to go, as there is no other place to use it). 2. Cost. I'm tight on money, so something relatively low cost, but a good reliable machine is necessary. I'm willing to dig deep into my pockets a bit if need be for something that will last.

It doesn't need to be fancy, but I do want it to be motorized. It doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles. At most, I'll do a light jog on it. In truth, I may even consider training Ari to go on it! For instance, last night the windchills were in the negative double digits. Too cold for anything but a potty run. It would be cool if I could train her to safely use it to help get out some energy (I think she'd like it).

Anyone own a treadmill and/or could steer me in the right direction for a good brand/model? I started looking online and was very overwhelmed to say the least! There are a lot of people selling their treadmills on Craigslist right now within my price range (looking to spend no more than $150) so that's an option.

We use our treadmill daily.  To be honest, it's a pretty expensive one. DH wouldn't even tell me how much it cost because he was afraid I would freak out. I think it was in the $1,800.00 range.  We've had it about five years. It's lasted and lasted with no problems. Ours doesn't fold up.  I know people who have bought cheap ones and they are very prone to breakdowns and they can be super noisey.  Now is a good time to look for used ones.

Ours is a Pacemaster.  A friend bought a Smooth Fitness brand last year and he loves it.

Yeah, I'd be willing to go a little over $150, but I definately couldn't swing more than $250 unfortunately. I'm poor Sad. I saw a lot of them on craigslist, many reportedly bought and never used (a common theme I would think with exercise equipment).

I could deal with a noisy machine, but frequent breakdowns would not be cool. If that would be the case, I'd rather hold off and save up for a year for a better machine. I'm all about spending money wisely, mostly because I never have any! I will likely use it daily, if not every other day so that is a consideration as well, as far as wear and tear goes.

Mine is a Weslo Cadence; and it was about $600.  I've had it for about 12 years now.  It does fold up and can be stored against the wall.  Its too big and heavy to move around.  I am into Wii Fitness right now, so it is being ignored currently.  But, when I do use it, I'll either read or watch a dvd.  Watching the movies or TV series on dvd seems to make the time go by faster for me.

You might have to pay a bit more to get a decent one that will last.  I remember buying one prior to this one and it was about $200....and not motorized.  I ended up not even using it...so that was a waste of money.

    Good luck!

I have an inexpensive one at work. DH had it when I met him and I used it here at home until he bought me an elliptical 2 yrs ago. Now I have it in my office at work. It's a Sears model and my main complaints are that the track isn't wide enough, it's noisy and there isn't much padding. I only use it when I can't get to the gym at lunch and for that, it serves it's purpose, but if I were buying a new one, I'd spend the extra $ to at least have more padding. If you decide to buy a used one on Craigslist, be sure to check it out first.

We have a more expensive one now; however, years back we bought one from Walmart in the $150 range and although it was louder than the one we have now, it held up fine.  We sold it on Craig's List to get an elitpical and then ended up going back to the treadmill.

Hmmm, maybe I'll put my significant other on the job of researching all this for me. He immensely enjoys researching stuff we want to purchase to get the best possible deal and value. Personally, I hate it. Thank you all for the advice. I'm starting to think I should probably hold off and get a least a little more money tucked away. I really don't want to buy something that is highly likely to just break down on me.

I'm the researcher in my family and of all my friends!Big Smile  I would pick out a couple that are suitable and then go looking..  some people just want to get rid of things on craigs list know matter what they originally paid.   You may be able to find a good one at a really low price.  Good Luck!

I'm glad the SO likes to research, b/c while I WILL, I don't enjoy it. I really am hoping I can get a good one off Craigslist. There are not a lot of jobs around here to begin with, so with the economy I'm sure people are looking to sell things like treadmills for whatever they can get to get some cash. There are a number right in my area where I could easily arrange to take a look at it before buying.

Y a I was going to suggest CL.  we have one I think it's a proform, it folds up. all the dogs have been on it. I would suggest if you can to get one where the speed is increased/decreased with a button rather than a slide type switch. ours has the slide, and its very difficult to get the right speed when the dogs are on it. I can get a walk speed, but not a trot, it ends up going into a crazy fast pace ( more like a run) but the dogs freak out cuz it's too much of an increase. so that sucks :)

LOL, I have the slide too and it's horrible. You're barely moving and then you move the slide a little and you're in warp speed. Not fun for me and my dogs would think I'd lost my mind if I put them on and it did that.

Thanks for the heads up on the button versus the slide! I'll definitely avoid getting one with a slide. Ari would probably not be happy with me, and I know I would never want to go that fast myself!

I bought a treadmill a couple years ago.  When I was looking to buy one I found out that the older models were the cheapest/had the best deals.  I payed just over 1000 at the time for a 2.5HP digital model that was "last years model".  They can be hard to find though.  I'm not sure if I'ld want to buy a used one just because you never know what you're getting....unless you know the person maybe.  I see them in the flyers all the time from 250 to 3000 and lots of the time there are really big discounts.  I saw one just the other day for I think approx. $500 on sale from close to $1500.  You might be able to get a good one from a local gym.  I was really close to buying one this way befor I found the one I've got now.

I used to use mine all the time until my pup got sick...then I kinda got lazy with it.  I've got a treadmill, Bowflex, recumbent bike, and freeweights that I usually switch between.  Maybe you could find your equipment at a gym that is updating.....might be able to get several pieces.

    Good luck on the hunt.
