    Another Neighbor attacked

I am often asked why some of these dogs scare me.. This is why.....

WINDER, Ga. -- The family of a 62-year-old victim of a pit bull attack credit his neighbors with saving his life.Kelly Edwards is still hospitalized after surgery and more than 100 stitches."If it had been just a couple more minutes, as much blood as he's lost, we wouldn't have him," said Edwards' daughter, Kathy Westall.Edwards was taking his usual early morning walk along Englewood Road in Winder when, he told his daughters, that he was attacked by three animals that lived in a nearby home."And he said they just came and started attacking him -- three of them. Three pit bulls," said Westall. The blood trail down Englewood -- some 30 yards long -- showed just how violent the 10 minute attack was.Westall said her father covered his head and neck but the dogs tore at his arms and legs. Finally, a neighbor heard the fight and rushed to help."He came running out with a stick and then his son came out with a gun and they did shoot one and killed it and then the other two ran back home when they heard the gunshot," said Westall.Edwards was rushed to the hospital and immediately taken into five hours of surgery. Doctors told his daughters that he lost a lot of blood but should recover.Westall and her sisters are thankful that someone was home to help."We thank God that he was there because even 2 more minutes later, our dad would not be here," said Westall.Edwards is still hospitalized. The surviving pit bulls are in custody of animal control.

We know you don't like Pits already, but to be honest, in your neck of the woods, I'm more afraid of irresponsible ownership of any breed.  There are responsible people, and non-responsible people.  When was the last time you heard of any breed attacking someone while it was on leash, securely fenced, neutered, and under the control of its responsible owner???  This is a human problem, not a dog problem - they all have teeth.

The reason that I posted this article, is because whenever a  PB post talks about how the attacks by this breed are all just made up by the media, these dogs only attack other dogs not people,  it's not the dog's fault,  I usually relate the fear that I and many dog owners I know  have regarding dogs of this breed. ( This of course brings the response that I must "hate the breed")   I have also stated many times that these attacks are frequently reported in my area, and that is one of the reasons that I am concerned about the large  numbers of these dogs that are appearing in our neighborhoods.   This current article, is very typical of most of the articles regarding attacks by this breed. There have been over a half dozen in the last 9 months or so, just in our metro area.  Very often, the person that is attacked is walking by himself or herself  with or without a dog of their own. Many times the attack involves more than one dog.  Usually the attack cannot be stopped by the victim, and many times a firearm or other weapon has to be used by someone to thwart the attack, as was done in this case.

People can talk about the fault being with irresponsible owners until the cows come home, but having these dogs in our  neighborhood scares the dickens out of alot of  people. They are just waiting for one of these dogs to " go off" and really hurt someone.  A lady at the dog park last week said she had a neighbor that had a PB, a few years ago, and she said it was like living nest to a "hand grenade".  She said she was nervous everytime she walked her dogs.  By the way, I have lived in this area for over 20 years and I cannot remember reading or hearing about about a multiple dog attack by any other breed,   during my time here.   The feeling in Atlanta by many people, is that if this continues at the present rate, that  communities will start the  push for  BSL.  People don't like when their safety is  threatened by someone elses pet...

Bob, do you get off on posting this stuff?  Because if I wanted to I could pull up articles all day long.  It doesn't serve a greater good, all it does is perpetuate a stereotype.

You're not going to rid the world of them.  Heck, you're not going to rid  Winder of them.

    ETA more objectivity.[;)]

Bob, since you have an obvious dislike of pit bulls & you insist on only posting bad things about pit bulls.  I challenge you to report all dog bites in your area.  You may realize that there are other breeds of dogs that bite as well.

Not many good things written about PB's in my area.  If you find any, why dont you post them here so we can all read them...

I'm not sure it was meant as literal 'neighbor'...

I have no problem with any of the bully breeds. I see them often at work, and the good majority are sweet dogs..I've not experienced any more aggressive behavior in them than in some of the mixed breeds, labs, etc.  In fact, the last dog we had a major problem with was some sort of cattle dog mixture that wrenched my back a good one while trying to keep it from grabbing at me while we did its toes.

It's much more an issue of responsible ownership. One can argue about the breed being aggressive (which isn't something I personally believe, but neither here nor there) until they're blue in the face, but even IF a dog (of any breed) is aggressive, if they are altered, kept leashed when out and about, and kept properly contained when at home, it isn't going to be an issue for anyone.  There are a large number of bully breeds in my neighborhood. I would have had no idea, aside from seeing them in their yards when I walk my dogs.  They never run at large or cause any problems.

The same person who lets an aggressive pit bull run around loose and disturb neighbors is going to do the same to a Labrador, mixed breed, etc.

I think that you may want to re-read my post.  I asked you to report all dog bites.  Nowhere in my post did I ask for you to post soemthing nice about pit bulls.  I know that you hate the breed far too much for that.

I was attempting to point out that there are more than one breed of dog that bites.  I believe you to be a somewhat intelligent man & I was asking you for objectivity in regards to the number of bites total.

For most people, the main concern is the damage they cause, not just a bite. I don't hear many packs  labs or poodle attacking people and pets. I am sure someone will find a story about a  pack of poodles now, ha. The strength and damage of some breeds, not just pitbulls, is the scary part. In my case it was a Rott.. Just one thank goodness. More that one would have been a diff. ending I am afraid.

Actually, there have been a couple of members on here whose dogs have been attacked by couple of labs at a time.  Many, many, many large dogs can cause significant bite damage.  That does not mean, however, that they are all just waiting for the chance to attack.
