    A little nervous (girly stuff)

I'm having an IUD placed tomorrow and I'm getting a bit nervous about it - I know it hurts when placed and then you feel cramping for a day or so, so nothing major, but it's still scary to purposely subject yourself to pain.  Everyone I've talked to has said it's worth it and DH and I are both looking forward to not needing any other type of birth control for the next 5 years, but I'm still nervous.

My appointment is at 1:30pm so I'm going in for a half day of work then am off for the rest of the day and all of Thursday.  I have to use misopristol tonight to get things softened up and thus make things go more smoothly, and then 3 aleve about 20 mins before my appointment to stave off cramping.  They're giving me antibiotics tomorrow as well just to ward off any hint of infection (I usually don't go for prophalactic antibiotics, but in this case I sure as heck do since and infection there could be pretty dangerous).

    Good vibes please?

I had mine place in September and love it.  It didn't even hurt that much when they placed it...maybe 20 seconds of cramping and that's it.  Things were a little irregular for the 1st 60 days or so, but now everything is back to normal.  It's great!!!

I got mine sometime in the spring I think.  Love it.  Absolutely love it.  My doctor used a local when he put it in, so I didn't feel anything.  The next days cramping was just like normal PMS cramps, so nothing major.

And now, my period is a light stain for 3 days a month, then gone.  And each one is progressively lighter.  I suspect it may go away all together at some point.  Yay!

Thanks all!  My dr. had never heard of using a local for the IUD procedure, so I don't get the benefit of that (boo), but I do expect it to go well and some of the input from you guys and others I know with IUDs is quite reassuring.  Paws crossed that the meds last night were worth the mild cramping and sleeplessness last night!

I never noticed cramping afterwards and now, a year later, no periods to speak of in months!  The only downfall to that is now I have to track when it "should" have been so I can recognize why I get crabby once a month!  lol..  It doesn't level you out completely but not having the period is soooooo nice!

I hope the procedure goes well!

I have a question, maybe a dumb one lol, but is this form of birth control 100%?  Because if not, how do you tell, not having a cycle, if you are pregnant or not?

Well, Lauren, all 4 times I have been pregnant, my first clue was never missing a period.  There are other signs.  But this BC is as effective as any other out there, the pill, Nuvaring, Depo.  I think they're all around 99%, but the thing with this one is that there's absolutely no way to forget, so for me at least, it ups my chances of it being effective.  Honestly when I was on the pill, it was pretty good if I remembered it every day for the first week, after that it was every second day or so...The ring was ok, until I took it out for the first week it was supposed to be out, then I was a day late putting a new one in.  Even with Depo, I would be a few days late going in to get the shot each time, especially since that was on my clock and the doctors...

ahhh see lol I have never been pregnant so I didn't know there are other signs lol

LOL I totally had the exact same question!  My dr. says it's the most effective out there (and some stats seem to indicate it might even be more effective than male sterilization!) because there's no room for human error.  I'm pretty good with my pills but we've used condoms too just for back up; my dr. says that won't be necessary with the IUD because the risk is so low.  So yea no or very light periods, no systemic hormones, and more effective all swayed me into the IUD.

Ok - I'm back - my dr. was on call and so I didn't actually get in until 3:30pm. :(  The procedure hurt more than I expected because my cervix wasn't opening enough.  There was actually discussion of her sometimes having patients that can't have an IUD inserted because of that so I was a bit worried at that point.  Fortunately she got things opened up and inserted after about 20-30 minutes.  I'm currently on the couch - cramps are ouchy but managable right now.  I still think it'll be worth it but that had to be one of my most uncomfortable experiences.

I don't recall it being much fun either. You'll probably want to stay on top of the pain with ibuprofen for the next couple of days and hopefully it'll be fine by then and you can celebrate Big Smile

Yup - I premedicated with 720mg of naproxen and dr. said I could take another 240-480mg at 7pm today, then 480 up to 3 times/day.  Aleve is my friend!
