Any idea if they are a "legitimate" organization???

    Thank You!!

From a glance at their website, I'd say NO.  They appear to be nothing more than a puppy broker.

    • Gold Top Dog

is that always a bad thing??

    yes?

Yes , it is bad!.. If you want a purebred puppy, do the research first.  I looked at ESS on their pages, and they start at $1100 and up.  You spend that kind of money on a dog, see it first or deal directly with a kennel or breeder you have researched.  On line research, visits to the kennel, talk to customers, talk to people who work with dogs like you want.  Some of their dogs are APRI registered.  I don't know if that means anything, But they have to be working with a bunch of puppy mills to supply pups in quantity.

ok, i am now "embarassed" to admit that we have entered into a contract to purchase a golden retriever "thru" thsi company. is there anything we could/should do to get more comfortable with our decision or shoudl we just get out?????

    • Gold Top Dog

Personally, I'd just get out of the contract.

For the prices of the dobes, you can get a pup from a very reputable breeder, who fully health tests their dogs.

GET OUT NOW!  Sorry for yelling, but I'd be hesitant to buy any dog from this group, especially a golden given how overbred the breed is and how many health issues can crop up in them.  I've also heard of some resource guarding and dog aggression popping up in some GR lines that have been overbred.

Get out now. Even losing a deposit to those people wouldn't be as bad as supporting that kind of establishment by purchasing a puppy.

Cancel it.  Google search shows they are a scam.  Good luck.

Any money you lose by getting out will be cheap compared to what you could possibly spend dealing with health issues and behavior problems.   Don't be embarassed that you already jumped before you did your research.  You are still way ahead of many people who purchase dogs from places like this and then find out what a huge mistake they made.   You are making the effort now and you will be so happy in the long run if you find a puppy from a reputable breeder.

Here's the parent web site for more info and help in choosing a breeder.

Ditto.  You were very smart to do a little more research before getting the puppy.

I'm going to second that. The aggression problems you mention are generally weeded out by the top breeders.  Goldens are supposed to be a biddable, friendly breed, and what I've been seeing lately from the mills and volume breeders is shocking.  Get out of the contract and find a Golden Breeder through AKC breeder referral, plus be sure that the parent dogs are all tested (OFA, CERF, PennHip, etc.).

Still interview the breeder thoroughly.  If they aren't offering a lifetime guarantee, and if the parents are not titled either in the show ring or a dog sport, then don't do it.  This is a breed heavily prone to hip and eye disorders, and cancer, so please do your homework.  Also, even the best breeders occasionally produce dogs with problems, because it is in the gene pool, so insure the dog right from the get go with pet insurance.

I also give you credit for doing more research - in addition to starting on a journey of good ownership, you are possibly saving yourself a lot of heartbreak, and setting a great example for others.  Spreading the word is the best thing you can do, and you can't do it till you are educated, so the fact that you are open to advice and learning is awesome.  Pat on the back to you!!!!
