Ron, thanks for posting this.. it brought a smile to my face and I really, really needed that today
Just returning the favor. You were always the bringer of joy and mirth and good feelings.
And in case you think Mr. Roth has had it easy, I remember a few tidbits from his memoir "Crazy from the heat."
As a child, he had problems with his lower legs and had to wear leg braces until the age of 11. Once he got those off, he excelled in the exercise of his choice. Karate. He has held a black belt since, I think the 70's. Times after a show when he can barely walk because his legs still give him trouble. Organized crime cutting in on the concession of t-shirts and concert stuff. And in the book is the one and only time he ever complained about the one thing that should have never happened. And that is the anti-semitism he has suffered. He is jewish and many is the reporter who could care less about his musical influences, expert status in martial arts, who are you dating, etc. It was always "so, you're jewish."
He has been everywhere from dirt poor to frontman for the biggest band in the world at that time. His lowest paying job was working for nothing on his uncle's farm, cleaning horse stalls. Goriest was being a scrub nurse in an ER room. His family, including his father are in medicine. So, it was not a big surprise when Roth became a certified New York City paramedic. He works there when he can.
But he takes his own advice. When life is raining lemons, make lemonade.
