GSD pup dropped off or a runaway - (dumdog)

all i did was brush her and add the collars. she had a couple specs of paint on her from when she visited the man across the street - he was painting his house - before she came over to us.

i am inclined to agree with you though. she is in VERY good shape, well fed and all that but she did smell like a dog when she got here. her poop was also purina puppy chow yellow.. no mistaking it... and i couldnt tell if her toe nails were worn down or had been clipped short some time ago. certainly wasnt recently. i dont think she's been lost for long. we live right next to an I-10 rest stop too. a few years ago when my mom was a security guard for the same place someone had tied a perfectly good Golden Retriever to the patrol car and left him there. the janitors said the dog had been there all day when my mom showed up for work that evening.... which is why i wouldnt be surprised IF she was abandoned. people just dont surprise me when it comes to this sorta thing. my cousins mom had her ten week old rotti pup for two weeks before saying she was too much work and gave her away...

either way we're looking for her home, but dont want to ask the wrong way. her markings arent very distinguishing at this point..... the only identifying feature she really has is a bit of dusting of white fur on the bridge of her nose. other than that she's just a black and tan floppy eared puppy. we'll either find her people or we wont. its all up to fate right now.

One other thing I can think of is to contact local vets.  Probably isn't too many in your neck of the woods.  Might be able to find the owner via them.

Are you anywhere near Spring Hill?... I know there are a few 'breeders' there that breed GSD.

    • Gold Top Dog

yeah we only have one vet in town and hes only here three times a week at best. his main office is Thomasville... i think... i've only been to this vet once for an emergency. nice guy though!

the only spring hill i know of is near Tampa and we're quite a good distance from there.

OH!! i wanted to brain my cousin today!!! she has implied  that we acquired this dog from someone.... and was a little pissy about the prospect. she said "You know if you wanted a shepherd puppy all you had to do was ask me! i got eight puppies, i'd give you one!"

i told her i didnt want this one. it just showed up and if it does stay it will only be because Allen has agreed to handle all the care and maintenance - bold faced lie, Allen works lol but she doesnt know that - truth be told i had my sights set on a grey hound or some kind of lurcher in the next year or two (( for hunting/sporting purposes but i'm only in the daydream stage right now)) still.... she made me mad with her comment and assumption. she seems to think we're not going to lift a finger to find the owners simply because we didnt post a flier out by the stop sign.. i'd rather post on Craigslist or do my own footwork instead of putting up signs no one will read.. we live on a BLIND curve with a speed limit of 55... no one is going to stop to read a little piece of paper.... would be too dangerous especially with people doing logging work out here right now.

hmm... good point. lol - I did not think that one all the way through!

I would do a search for GSD breeders in your area - there are a ton in FL. He looks pure, just slightly off from the 'standard'.

Good luck with the pup! He's a cutie =]

Another thing I thought of.  If your county does the rabies tag thing and since it is a small county it is entirely possible that they might have some information about a female GS that got shots in the last say 2-4 months ago if you think that the dog is 6 months old.  They probably don't have a huge number of records to look through and it is just a chance.

Of course you can also put found ads free in your local paper.  Also since you can't leave fliers on posts you can leave them on mailboxes (just not inside).  Also contact you postal person if you are on RR delivery,  they many times know where all the dogs live.

I bet she's jealous.  If that dog wondered into my yard, no one came looking for her, and my dogs liked her, you bet I'd keep her!

    • Gold Top Dog

thanks :D we're doing all that and more. i'm almost certain if she got shots it would have been done in Tallahassee and not out here... slim chance anyway but worth looking in to! most of the people around here go to the Tally vets.

the sad thing is soooooooo many people that breed shepherds out here. they are number 2 next to pit bulls in the popularity contests, but given that this is a small town i'm pretty sure we'll find her people quickly. i just hope its the right thing to do you know? i know i cant very well dictate to someone on how to train their dog and i have absolutely no right to KEEP someones dog because i think they are "doing it wrong"...  but this one acts like she is the head of the house. she's spoiled rotten and i dont mean that in a cute funny way like most of the "spoiled" dogs here. she has the potential to be dangerous if she's left as she is.

the most i can do when we find her people is advise them and hope they listen.

that was my thought.. i just laughed it off. i already know she's jealous. she so much as admitted it when she said she wanted to breed her shepherd to her Super Angry

If she's well-cared-for, it probably means she was dumped recently and ISN'T lost. Sounds to me like someone didn't know how to handle a rowdy shepherd and gave up when she started getting bigger. That'd be my guess!

that was my assumption as well. its obvious, to me anyway, that even though she is clean and well fed that i highly doubt she's had much interaction with people because she jumps up or runs straight into your knees..

my husband's oldest daughter and her ex boyfriend had two pit bulls that stayed in crates all day - in the garage - and were walked only in the evenings... which was more of a drag than a walk. then were turned loose in the house for an hour (or until they got fed up with them) then crated again. they had the same manners as this one only worse. they were overly hyper and boisterous greeters, no clue how to interact with others without hurting someone.

i know a lot of big dogs dont seem to know their size especially when they're young but this one has absolutely no earthly idea! this morning i introduced her to Amber while everyone was still in bed.... i felt it best to do it that way because i simply CANT "rotate" dogs, locking one in a room while i take one outside then locking THAT dog in a room so i can take the other out etc.... not fair at all! the whole situation was funny and i wish i had my camera. the shepherd was play bowing and springing into the air and "talking", doing everything she could to get Amber to play... and all Amber did was glare at her. She has nearly cured this pup of some of the rudeness.... Amber wanted to run around but when she did she got dive bombed from behind. that lasted all of five minutes before Amber set her straight with a few nips which resulted in the shepherd tucking her tail and head and going the other direction or flopping onto her back.

So i'm happy. the biggest worry i had was Amber refusing to accept her while everyone else was getting along. I'm still holding out for finding her home but its looking grim..... ok i take that back. Allen is stoked that he didnt find her people yesterday Confused but we're still looking.

ETA i showed her to my brother last night and his comment was "Screw it! keep her! you found her fair and square."   .... figures that a cop would say that!!!!
