GSD pup dropped off or a runaway - (dumdog)

GSD pup dropped off or a runaway - (dumdog)

so yesterday morning i was outside doing the farm thing - just had a wild hen hatch out a dozen chicks so i was gathering them up to put in the coop (we dont like wild chickens) i went inside for a moment to change clothes(i got pooped on Stick out tongue )  and talk to DH when my mom bursts in through the door shouting something about needing help RIGHT NOW THERE IS A STRAY DOG OUTSIDE!! . . . . as i was following her outside she said she thought it was a shepherd, and was headed to our backyard, which is "yard shark territory" .. my bulldogs are generally very friendly towards other dogs as long as its a neutral territory but my mom tends to think the worst about them.. i wasnt really worried to say the least.. i was more concerned about the wild hen that was in her cage out in the open!

So this rather large black and tan dog was running in and out of the i-fence zone playing peek-a-boo with Kaydee and Ben, both were doing the same, wanting to sniff and be friends but still being cautious at the same time. i didnt want to risk my mom upsetting the bulldogs on account of this strange dog because when they see an upset human they automatically try to identify the source of anxiety and remove it - typical bulldog trait that my mom ignores despite my warning her!!-  anyway i threw caution to the wind and just picked up this strange dog and carried her to the front yard away from the bullies and the chickens...... she had no collar on so i didnt have much choice in the matter.

Long story short...... look what i "caught"

i had one of Kaydee's old choke chains to put on her until DH could go buy a better one for her. she looks to be a rather young GSD pup.... has absolutely no manners at all. she wants to hassle the rabbits and ducks and cat but love love loves the boys. we put her in the house and she kept trying stick her nose through the baby gate, then backed herself up to the gate, sat down, and looked over her shoulder at the boys as if she was saying "Pet me!!". as much as she likes them she is too big and too rough and only knocks them over. Shane doesnt seem to care. he's a rough and tumble baby, but my oldest son wants to stay as far away from her as possible. and i dont blame him really. she's very boisterous!

Allen took her outside into the fenced yard so she could blow off steam... she's soooooo hyper!!!

i've owned puppies in the past, but i did more than just own them..... i worked with them. they were never rude or annoying like this one. while in the house she kept jumping up and putting her feet on the counter, almost stole food out of my hand as i was about to put it in my mouth, if you sit down the dive bombs into your lap and tries to lick you from ear to neck.. last night Allen insisted she sleep with us.... which she seemed right at home doing... one of my rules has always been "no dogs in the bed - only room enough for one b*tch"  but i relented.. too tired to argue. for all her bad habits she does seem to be house trained. slept all night with no accidents and woke us up to go out.

Right now she's with Allen, riding around trying to find her people..... the man across the street said he saw a truck drive down the logging road with a dog in the back but wasnt paying attention to see if he came back with the dog. there is a crew doing work down the street and i thought maybe she came from one of those guys but no one has claimed her.....

funniest thing was when my cousin came to pick her boys up after work yesterday - she said if we couldnt/wouldnt keep her then she'd gladly take her off our hands.. i couldnt help myself when i said "what?? with two rotti pups, three adult shepherds AND a litter of eight puppies plus three chihuahuas.. You call US crazy?!"  then Allen just firmly said if she doesnt find her home then she stays with us and no where else.

honestly..... i dont know what to think of all this.... as rude as she is i can almost understand why someone would dump her. people ARE that stupid Confused  she isnt the worst dog i've come across. the little pit bull that we fostered last year was a night mare when it came to chewing and mischief in general.. this girl looks to be rather young, unsocialised, and untrained. she has an intense prey drive that can ONLY be diverted with food. she does know how to sit and lie down but ONLY with food.... i'm not in the habit of training with treats.. never had to use them much with puppies i've raised in the past. but i guess you gotta do what you gotta do.

I did tell Allen that - since he is the one insisting on her staying here -  that she MUST learn to leave the rabbits, goats, birds and cat alone. she and Amber MUST be properly introduced - when i had Amber as a puppy i never had to worry about her being aggressive, but since i've gotten her back she;s a little monster to other dogs!! - the bulldogs dont even bother me. i know i can predict their behaviour. they've already accepted her, probably because she's a puppy and submissive around them. she's almost as big as they are though.. one thing i would love to see - if she stays - is her learn how to herd like a shepherd...... we have 9 goats and will be getting more eventually so it would be loverly to have a dog to help herd them Big Smile

anyways..... since yesterday morning we've all been busy puppy proofing. we're fully prepared to keep her But we do expect to return her to her owners eventually.. my husbands concern is they wont turn up until months later after he's gotten attached (as if he hasnt already)

One last thing........ i've owned bulldogs so long now that dog hair has not been a problem for me unless i wear a dark shirt....its obvious they shed like any other dog, but the hair is so small.... since she's been with us i had to pull long black dog hairs out of my plate and drinking glass more times than i care to count Stick out tongue bleagh!! sure is bringing back some memories!!

Well, she is a very cute dog!! I would want to keep her too if I found her and couldn't locate the owners. :)

    • Gold Top Dog
    She's so cute!

Don't forget to have her scanned for a microchip!

    • Gold Top Dog

yep we talked about that - he's supposed to be doing that while he's out with her.

i swear my husband is a mess...... he's in hog heaven right now. he's a shepherd man where as i'm a bulldog fan.. he's in hog heaven with this dog!! check out their faces - they even look alike with their tongues hanging out like that Hmm   (((((((he doesnt know i have this pic of him lol he'll probably kill me if he knows i showed it to anyone!!))))))))))))))

LOL, that picture is so funny!

She is cute. I can see why your husband would want to keep her.

my biggest problem is her age and whether or not she's been spayed..... i mean.... what is the right thing to do? say she is some escaped top o the line AKC show puppy prospect that slipped her collar.... we find her and get her spayed - she looks old enough to have that done right about now i think - and then her owners show up to claim her and........ well you know?

we dont want puppies.... we're not in the puppy biz. my cousin is but she's been refused quite flatly....

    ugh.... how annoying!

    • Gold Top Dog

I can tell you right now she's not top of the AKC show line, or any line.  Her eyes are too light.  She should not be bred.  That's not a serious thing by any means, but there's no point in anyone breeding a dog that does not fit the standard.  So, even if you come across the owners and they WERE planning on breeding her, they shouldn't be.  And that's just what I see without seeing a stacked pic or knowing height/weight, temperament, etc.

If I found her, I'd call my shelter and ask what the rules are about adopting strays, ie how long the shelter is required to hold a stray.  I'd keep it that long and if no one turned up, I'd make plans to spay her if I planned to keep her.  I'd also get her registered, if applicable in the county.

see i'm no shepherd expert. i only know one when i see it. she moves very well. not slumpy or wonky, very strong and muscular and straight backed - but thats not always a sure thing i've come to find out - she's also a bit chubby. has some fat rolls on her tummy and rear end lol i'm guessing previous owners probably let her have access to food all day.

as for our local shelter.. well if you can call it that... its just a holding facility with only two ACOs that are on duty randomly... and never at the same time. there is a two week time limit before the animal is destroyed. that sounds about fair to me... to get her spayed in two weeks i mean...

If you can get some side/stacked pics of her I bet Xeph could give you a decent critique.

I LOVE the blanket black coloring with those light marks above the eyes (same gene as the Rott pattern I think).  It's one of my faves.

    • Gold Top Dog

lol her markings sparked a brief argument with my cousin.... i'm used to shepherds changing their colours as they get older. i have seen some that remain dark, but never as dark as they were as pups, you know what i mean?

i predicted she would lighten up a wee bit before she is over a year old but dearest cousin firmly disagreed because her "stud" looks the same now as he did at six months.. which i disagreed with but have no pictures to prove it..... just my experience with family shepherds.. i dont think she'll totally change out her colours i just dont think she'll be quite as dark as she is now. i could be wrong though. only time will tell!

when Allen gets back i'll get some stacked pics of her. or try to anyway. might take someone holding her still to get it done lol  and uh... how do you stack them anyway?

    ETA

also because i'm not a shepherd expert.. about how old would you guess her to be? everyone is guessing five or six months but i'm not so sure..

    • Gold Top Dog

If you keep her, spay her.  She's definitely not an AKC kennel escapee.  Eyes are too light, angulation isn't there, color is wrong, ears are the wrong size, and the head isn't as refined as is normal for an AKC showline dog.

As for her color, that little bitch will end up with a saddle I'm pretty sure

She is adorable and looks about 6 months old to me. I would want to have her spayed within the next month for sure. Seems your husband has fallen head over heels and I can see why. I love her expression in the playing pictures. She may be chipped, and if she's been eating well, someone may be missing their dog, so I hope your hubby's heart isn't broken. You can always get a puppy! Big Smile

Here's how I stacked Jaia (first time) I used treats and cinderblocks. The front legs should be aligned with each other, facing forward and straight down from the body. The near rear foot hock should be perpendicular to the ground and the far rear foot should be positioned beneath the penis (or in that area if no penis is present). Embarrassed

    She's pretty! Good luck.

Allen probably wont be home until late this evening so i'll give an update tomorrow.

i dont feel nearly as bad about getting her spayed now. she looks healthy and sound to me but that only means she's one among many and if she doesnt cool it with trying to eat the live stock there may be some problems in the future. but i wont doom her after only two days! last night i picked up the cat to bring him inside .... normally he is calm around dogs.. but once we got inside the door he took one look at her and peeled out... on my rib cage. did this buzz saw spin around my arm and leaped across the room and hid in the kitchen. fortunately my husband was holding her when that happened.. as soon as she saw him run she was lunging and barking... unfortunately my side looks like a disaster area Stick out tongue

i dont care IF her previous owners miss her, they were STOOPID not to acclimate her to other animals!! stoopid stoopid stoopid!!

I'm wondering, those pictures you took in the first post.  Were they right after she found you.  Had you cleaned her up?  If not she looks like she hadn't been gone too long or traveled too far.  Just looks to be in too good of shape.

That is what I was thinking......she is a cute little fatty.......

In general it is pretty hard to keep a young GSD in that fat stage....lol....they are so hyper and run off any weight.....do her nails look worn? I am just wondering if she was kept inside.......
