Glasscow most definitely they're still used in Japan by the aforementioned thugs, to fight. No different than here in the USA with the poor pits. Low class people like low class hobbies! The documentary I saw was 2002 or therabouts if I recall. Other places in the world...they are likely just shown bred and are already I think on some foreign breed ban lists :(

The dogs are too valuable to fight to the death...but there is sure a lot of blood going on. They train the dogs to fight Sumo style meaning they wrestle as much as anything else...

The Tosa was crossed into the Akita when modern day dog fighting swept Japan...1912 or thereabouts....thru 1920something. Resulted in a completely different look to the Akita.....and of course other breeds were also crossed in.

They are a nice breed...nice with people. Seeing one in the full out fighting Tosa robe is something!

As I always say with the mastiff type breeds, most are not for the novice/first time dog owner, they may look nice but some mastiff breeds are highly strung and need constant and consistant training, they do take a lot of dedication but then again all dogs do but some are more specialist than others [:D]

I would say Mastiff and Lab as well. It looks just like my friends mothers old dog but a smaller head. She had a callico bull mastiff. Beautiful dog, but had so many health problem the poor fella. Not to mention what she paid for him ($6,000) and he only lived a year and a half. Does anyone know whay large dogs like that have problems? Reason I ask, is my uncle has a huge dane/lab mix who's a big sweetheart, but I fear that he is going to have major health issues later on and wonder what can be done to HELP prevent that?

He looks like he has quite a bit of Mastiff in him.
