Toys my pup won't chew up?

Hmmmmmmmmm ... guess I'll be spending summore money.  This finding the right toy thing is so so so frustrating ... it's been 7 months sine I got her, and everytime I think I found something, she goes into some different stage and it's hooooorrible!

Anyone have any opinions on the nylabones?

The booda toys look good, I'll check em out, too.  Dweezil figured out pretty fast, with her puppy kong, that if she just bit down on the middle, it'd crack the treat in half and all she had to do was turn it over ... hm.  But, you're right, I think I do have to get a bigger one, and one that's "stiffer"  --the puppy one seems to give way too easily, even though it's still pretty indestructible.

She's a Norfolk Terrier/Cocker Spaniel mix ... hyper as anything.  Pretty much, a small terrier in a bigger body.  Sometimes (only sometimes) do I wish I had one of those nice big mellow dogs!  In puppy class, there were 5 small dogs, and 1 chocolate lab.  The lab sat and watched everyone going crazy and barking, and got bored.  hah!

are you trying to use these toys as a "babysitter"?  People who describe their dogs as "hyper" usually just need to exercise and train their dogs more, as in spend more time interacting with the dog. Get a toy out and play a super-intense game of fetch and tug, incorporating training into the game, and then take the dog for a good long walk. Never feed your dog out of a bowl-- make the dog work for every bite of food, either as training rewards or eaten out of a treat-dispensing toy. If your dog isn't happy to flop down and sleep or chew quietly when you sit down the dog needs more exercise and training, not more toys to destroy on their own. Terriers are high-energy dogs, and need tons of exercise.

I personally do not want my dogs eating plastic, and don't consider nylabones to be safe or desirable chews. Put an old towel down on the floor to save the carpet and you can offer a nice safe raw knuckle bone. It's ok and healthy for dogs to consume the soft bone off the joint of a raw knuckle bone.

I take her for two 25 (edited "45" typo!) minute walks a day, has a fenced yard where she runs around, and she wanders the house (w/4 other people home, so she gets a lot of attention) all day ... so, I didn't think searching for a toy to keep her occupied was asking too much ... but by all means, tell me if I should be spending the entire day walking the neighborhood ...

The food idea is great though, I've done that on occasion.  I have one of those treat balls that she has to roll in a certain fashion to get the food out, and I have also had training sessions with her, with her food as the "treats."

edit: I also should mention, that she is very restful after our long walks ... I just don't think I should have to take her on 4 walks a day to keep her calm ... I mean, maybe a lot of this is just puppy-ness?  Because she has calmed down SIGNIFICANTLY since I got her (she's almost a year old, I've had her since she was 4 months).  She flops down at night.  But would (of course) rather have our pillows than her toys.  It's not so much that I need her to be occupied, I suppose, as much as I need her to be occupied with her toys rather than my couch!

How far can you be walking in 25 minutes? My grown dogs get a two mile walk, a day, plus we have a good hour of interactive playtime, at a minimum. We usually get in a short, fast paced training session, as well. Wandering around the house isn't keeping her from getting bored.

Plain dog biscuits in Kongs last no time, LOL. You need to use canned food, or broth, or something that'll really freeze in there, well.

25 minutes is about a mille and a half (all the way around my neighborhood).  So, 2x a day is 3 miles a day.  Then she runs around the yard several times a day, too.  I was really just asking about toys, I didn't really need exercise lectures; she's getting enough exercise.  Though, I did need to adjust the timing of the last walk of the day so that she'd be calm through bedtime.

I didn't much appreciate feeling like I was being told that I don't realize that my dog needs more exercise (though I'm pretty sure you guys didn't mean to upset me, with my quick temper!!!  [:)]).  I went into having a small terrier understanding that she needed lots of walking, a big yard to run around, lots of training.  However, I also want to point out that there are millions of perfectly happy doggies in families that do a lot less than I do (which I believe is sufficient), but love the dog, and take care of them.

Any suggestions for fun training ideas?  Should I go get some books?  So far we've got sit, stay, crawl, lie, roll over, balance (sitting up on her butt), and dance.

Well, if it makes you feel any better.....my thought certainly was not that you were
looking to toys as a sourse of babysitting.  You love your dog and want the best
for him/her.  I am always in search of good toys and like hearing about what toys
other folks have success with.   I walk my puppy 2 miles every morning and that
little sucker will almost always get a second wind when we get home.  He gets a
shorter walk in the evening when im at work as well.
I gave him a nylabone and he chewed a few chunks off so i have not given him one since.  I have not given him raw bones anymore either because he gets poopty pants from it.  He gets rope toys and other chew toys and his teeth brushed to help in that department.  He likes the wholey roller, tennis balls, stuffed kongs, squeaker kong bone and couple others.  Oddly enuf, his favorite is probably an old hand towel we used to wet and freeze when he was teething.
Good luck with your search for toys....ill probably try a couple that were suggested here as well.

I really like clicker training. On clickertraining.com, there is an article called, "101 things to do with a box". That's a fun game to play. Rapid commands are fun, for them. Commands for toys are fun. Learning new tricks is LOTS of fun, especially when you clicker train, and make them figure it out, for themselves. I like to lay out random objects, say the name of an object, and let them figure out which object I mean. I treat, for touching (or bringing) that object, and say the name again. They can learn the names of ALL their toys, like that.

Jo, what's the wholly roller??  The towel idea is a good one, too.  Gosh, I'm glad I asked ... today I took her on her two walks ... after the second one, she came home, finished panting and drinking her water and rested for maybe 15 minutes ... then ran for the couch to steal my pillows!  I still can't grasp how she doesn't get tired sometimes.  We played fetch for awhile ... then she calmed a bit ... coz she was watching everyone make dinner ... hmmmmmm.  Sometimes I think the exercise makes her more hyper, somehow.

I'm really excited to try the toy commands ... a friend of mine said she trained her shepherd to "bring my slippers" ... it would go all the way upstairs and bring them down for her ... that'd be nice.  [:D]

Im sorry, i spelled it wrong. It's  a Hol-ee roller.  He likes it.  Blue
Buffalo as well as some others make a  nice square dog cookie and
i will put one in there and watch him try to take it out.  It doesnt take him long to figure out to just bite it so i also put one of his smaller balls or sqeeky toys in there as well.  The holes stretch so u can put items in there. Ill try to post a link.  I really like a lot of JW Pet toys.  He doesnt destroy them as fast.  I want the bad cuz but will have to watch him with it, he may chew the feet off.

I got that firehose toy .... she's rippin at the outsides already!!!  Agh!  We'll see how long it lasts.  We're at ... 20 minutes now.  Maybe she'll stop at the trim.
    • Gold Top Dog
update -- took 30 min for her to rip the rope out of the side, which in turn ripped open the whole side ... so the "firehose" aspect of it did nothing ... because she ripped the toy open where it comes together ... that was a waste of 5 bucks!  [:(]
